On the Uncertainties of a Structural Model

    Giora Maymon1
    Structural Longevity, Vol.7, No.1, pp. 1-11, 2012, DOI:10.3970/sl.2012.007.001
Abstract In the last decade, probabilistic analysis was incorporated into the design process of structural elements and systems, using analytical methods and computational algorithms, which were developed for this purpose. Nevertheless, in such process there is always the question of the validity of the applied model. In this presentation, a method, which enables the inclusion of a random variable or process into the model, is described. These parameters are selected so that existing experimental results can be included in the probabilistic model, thus incorporating uncertainties of the simulation model in the analysis. Two examples are described. More >

Large-scale fire test for interior materials of the Korean high speed train

    W.H. Park1, D.H. Lee1, W.S. Jung1
    Structural Longevity, Vol.7, No.1, pp. 13-18, 2012, DOI:10.3970/sl.2012.007.013
Abstract A large-scale fire test was conducted in the room where the interior materials of a railroad vehicle for KTX (Korean eXpress Train)-II were used. As flame source in the room, a gas burner was used; the output of the gas burner was set to increase over time. The purpose of the test is to evaluate the fire resistance performance of the interior materials of a KTX-II when they ignite and flames spread and to obtain various types of data on flames developing into flashover and engulfing the interior materials of KTX-II These data will be More >

    Byung-Wan Jo1, Ji-Sun Choi2, Yoon-Ki Kim2, Yoon-Sung Lee2
    Structural Longevity, Vol.7, No.1, pp. 19-27, 2012, DOI:10.3970/sl.2012.007.019
Abstract As the cement industry not only consumes a large amount of energy but also uses limestone as the main as a raw material, emitting CO2, the main culprit behind global warming, it is expected to face a serious setback in the near future caused by environmental problems. With the advent of today’s cutting-edge technology and the public’s increased awareness about global environmental issues, the cement industry is actively seeking ways to adopt a variety of technology as part of an effort to diversify its resources. This study is designed to assess the material properties of zeolite… More >

Re-centering variable friction device for seismic control of structures

    O.E. Ozbulut1, S. Hurlebaus1
    Structural Longevity, Vol.7, No.1, pp. 29-36, 2012, DOI:10.3970/sl.2012.007.029
Abstract This paper investigates the seismic response control of a nonlinear benchmark building with a new re-centering variable friction device (RVFD). The RVFD consists of three parts: (i) a friction generation unit, (ii) a piezoelectric actuator, and (iii) shape memory alloy wires. The friction unit and piezoelectric actuator compose the first subcomponent of the hybrid device that is a variable friction damper (VFD). The clamping force of the VFD can be adjusted according to the current level of ground motion by adjusting the voltage level of piezoelectric actuators. The second subcomponent of this hybrid device consists… More >

Study on Non-Contact Surface Temperature Measurement Using Pyrometer in Cone Calorimeter

    K.B. Yoon1, W.H. Park2, T.K. Kim3
    Structural Longevity, Vol.7, No.1, pp. 37-43, 2012, DOI:10.3970/sl.2012.007.037
Abstract The surface temperature of the specimen was measured with thermocouple and pyrometer in the cone calorimeter to analyze the pyrolysis for solid fuels. When the pyrometer was used to measure temperature, heat flux from the cone heater was found to have reflected and entered the pyrometer. The performed correction temperature results were very consistent with those obtained using the thermocouple. Non-contact temperature measurement can be considered a technique to reduce measurement errors attributable to the deformation of specimen. More >

Multiscale Phase Spectrum Based Salient Object Detection

    Deepak Singh1, Sukadev Meher1
    Structural Longevity, Vol.7, No.1, pp. 45-57, 2012, DOI:10.3970/sl.2012.007.045
Abstract Automatic image segmentation is emerging field in image processing research domain. In a visual scene, the objects which are different from their surroundings get more visual importance and get high gaze attention of the viewer. Saliency detection predicts significantly important regions in a scene, which should be considered for further processing according to specific applications. There are several applications where saliency detection is used as core modules such as object based surveillance, content adaptive data delivery for low data rate systems, automatic foveation system. There are two different approaches to predict the viewer’s gaze in… More >

A Study on Design of A High Efficiency Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Blade Using Composite Materials

    H. Park1, H. Lee2, G. Park2
    Structural Longevity, Vol.7, No.1, pp. 59-65, 2012, DOI:10.3970/sl.2012.007.059
Abstract This work is to design a high efficiency 500W class composite VAWT blade which is applicable to relatively low speed region. In the aerodynamic design of blade, the parametric studies are carried out to decide an optimal aerodynamic configuration. The aerodynamic efficiency and performance of the designed VAWT is confirmed by the CFD analysis. The structural design is performed by the load case study, the initial sizing using the netting rule and the rule of mixture, the structural analysis using FEM, the fatigue life estimation and the structural test. The prototype blade is manufactured by More >
