    Yu Gong1,*, Jianyu Zhang1, Libin Zhao2, Ning Hu2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.3, pp. 1-2, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011451

Abstract Advanced carbon fiber reinforced composite materials are increasingly being used in aerospace and other fields. Composite laminate structure is one of the commonly used configurations, but due to weak interlayer performance, interlayer delamination is prone to occur [1]. The occurrence and growth of delamination will seriously affect the overall integrity and safety of composite structures, making it a focus of attention in the design of laminated structures. Accurately characterizing the delamination mechanical properties of composite laminates and simulating delamination propagation behavior is the basis for damage tolerance design and analysis of composite structures with delamination… More >

    Kaixin Xia1, Yu Gong2,*, Xinxin Qi3,4, Libin Zhao3,4,*, Linjuan Wang1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011650

Abstract The crack tip of the asymmetric four-point bend end-notched flexure (4AENF) delamination testing under shear loading often exhibits a proportion of mode I component, making it a typical mixed-mode I/II problem. Characterizing the total fracture toughness in 4AENF laminates is crucial for understanding the delamination phenomenon in composites. In this study, 4AENF tests were conducted on carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy asymmetric laminates to evaluate the total interlaminar fracture toughness under shear loading conditions. Additionally, the variation of interlaminar fracture toughness in asymmetric laminates with different fiber orientation angles was considered. Theoretical modelling was performed using an More >

    Ruizhe Huang1, Zhaoliang Qu1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011440

Abstract The surface brittle fracture of cermet coating seriously restricts its application. Accurate evaluation of the fracture toughness of cermet coating is a prerequisite for improving its life. This paper aims to propose an accurate characterization method for fracture toughness of cermet coating. By coupling instrumented indentation and X‑ ray computed tomography, the indentation-induced fracture behaviors under various loads within WC-12%Co coatings were studied. The indentation response was correlated with the damage evolution directly observed within the coating. The impact of substrate effects on indentation-induced fracture behaviors was further studied using finite element analysis (FEA). The… More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.010870

Abstract Graphite materials serve critical roles as moderators, reflectors and core structural components in high-temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactors. These materials may experience a variety of loads during the reactor operation, including thermal, radiation, fatigue and dynamic loads, potentially leading to crack initiation and propagation. Consequently, it is imperative to investigate the fracture properties of graphite materials. Currently, there exists a dearth of comprehensive studies on the fracture toughness of graphite materials with varying grain sizes, especially regarding dynamic fracture toughness. This study introduces a novel approach utilizing a digital-image-correlation-based virtual extensometer to analyze crack propagation in… More >

    Xue Liang1,2, Linjuan Wang3,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.3, pp. 2807-2834, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2024.046770 - 11 March 2024

Abstract The peridynamics (PD), as a promising nonlocal continuum mechanics theory, shines in solving discontinuous problems. Up to now, various numerical methods, such as the peridynamic mesh-free particle method (PD-MPM), peridynamic finite element method (PD-FEM), and peridynamic boundary element method (PD-BEM), have been proposed. PD-BEM, in particular, outperforms other methods by eliminating spurious boundary softening, efficiently handling infinite problems, and ensuring high computational accuracy. However, the existing PD-BEM is constructed exclusively for bond-based peridynamics (BBPD) with fixed Poisson’s ratio, limiting its applicability to crack propagation problems and scenarios involving infinite or semi-infinite problems. Molecular Dynamic Study on Entangled Structure of Polymer Chains’ Network under High Speed Loading Condition

    Isamu Riku1,*, Koji Mimura1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.26, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09070

Abstract It is well known that the mechanical resistance of soft materials such as rubber and elastomer can be improved by cross-linkages or fillers, which will lead to a construction of entangled structure of polymer chains’ network. However, the correlation between the amount of cross-linkages or fillers with the toughness strength of the resultant material has not been clarified. Therefore, in this study, we at first construct a computational model for the resultant material with molecular dynamics method. Then, a series of simulations are performed for the resultant materials with different amount of cross-linkages or fillers… More >

    Zhongping Xiao1, Chen Li1,2, Biqing Shu1, Shukai Tang2, Xinghuan Yang2, Yan Liu2,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 245-255, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.020751 - 10 August 2022

Abstract Fracture is a common failure form of poplar laminated veneer lumber (LVL). In the present work, we performed an experimental study on the mode-I along-grain interlaminar fracture, mode-I cross-grain interlaminar fracture, and mode-II interlaminar fracture of poplar LVL. We investigated stress mechanisms, failure modes, and fracture toughness values of the different fracture types. The experimental results revealed that the crack in the mode-I along-grain interlaminar fracture specimen propagated along the prefabricated crack direction, and the crack tip broke. The mode-I cross-grain interlaminar fracture specimen had cracks in the vertical direction near the prefabricated crack. In… More >
