    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.8, pp. 2015-2027, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.019891 - 25 April 2022

Abstract In this work, the thermal degradation and drying of bio-hardeners are investigated. Four bio-hardeners based on exudates of Senegalia senegal, Vachellia nilotica, Vachellia seyal, and Acacia Siebteriana were analyzed by FTIR and thermogravimetric analysis, and a desorption study was also conducted. The analysis by infrared spectroscopy indicates the existence of oligomers of different types all giving 5-hydroxy-2-hydroxymethylfuran and 2, 5-dihydroxymethylfuran which are then the real hardening molecules. The pyrolysis of these extracts reveals three main regions of mass loss, a first region is located between 25°C and 110°C reflecting the loss of water from the adhesive and the formation More > Graphic Abstract

Combustion Characteristics of Solid Refuse Fuels from Different Waste Sources

Jong Seong Chae1, Seok Wan Kim2, Tae In Ohm1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.7, pp. 789-799, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.010023 - 01 June 2020

Abstract In the production (as co-fuel or alone) of solid refuse fuel (SRF), knowledge about the characteristics of the raw materials is required for an ecofriendly and effective combustion process. SRFs are commonly produced by drying combustible waste and removing incombustible matter, resulting in a higher combustibility as compared to the original waste. However, the characteristics of SRFs may highly vary depending on where and from which materials they were produced. Thus, we investigated the characteristics of various SRFs using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As a TGA sample is commonly small, on the scale of milligrams, and,… More >

Effect of Fiber Loadings and Treatment on Dynamic Mechanical, Thermal and Flammability Properties of Pineapple Leaf Fiber and Kenaf Phenolic Composites

    M. Asim1, M. Jawaid1,2*, M. Nasir3, N. Saba1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.6, No.4, pp. 383-393, 2018, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2017.634162

Abstract This study deals with the analysis of dynamic mechanical, thermal and flammability properties of treated and untreated pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) and kenaf fiber (KF) phenolic composites. Results indicated that storage modulus was decreased for all composites with increases in temperature and pattern of slopes for all composites, having almost the same values of E' at glass transition temperature (Tg). The peak of the loss modulus of pure phenolic composites was shown to be much less. After the addition of kenaf/PALF, peaks were higher and shifted towards a high temperature. The Tan delta peak height More >

Improved Permeability Properties for Bacterial Cellulose/ Montmorillonite Hybrid Bionanocomposite Membranes by In-Situ Assembling

    Itxaso Algar1, Clara Garcia-Astrain1, Alba Gonzalez2, Loli Martin3, Nagore Gabilondo1, Aloña Retegi1*, Arantxa Eceiza1*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 57-65, 2016, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2015.634124

Abstract Bacterial cellulose/montmorillonite (BCMMT) hybrid bionanocomposite membranes were prepared by in-situ assembling or one-step biosynthesis process. The presence of MMT in BC membranes was confi rmed by thermogravimetric analysis and quantifi ed by mass spectrometry, resulting in bionanocomposites with MMT contents between 7–13 wt%. The incorporation of MMT during BC biosynthesis modifi ed BC morphology and led to lower porosity, even though higher water holding capacity was achieved. Bionanocomposites showed improved thermal stability and water vapor and oxygen gas barrier properties up to 70 and 80% with respect to neat BC membranes. This improvement was related More >
