Abstract Grapes, one of the oldest tree species globally, are rich in vitamins. However, environmental conditions such as low temperature and soil salinization significantly affect grape yield and quality. The glutamate receptor (GLR) family, comprising highly conserved ligand-gated ion channels, regulates plant growth and development in response to stress. In this study, 11 members of the VvGLR gene family in grapes were identified using whole-genome sequence analysis. Bioinformatic methods were employed to analyze the basic physical and chemical properties, phylogenetic trees, conserved domains, motifs, expression patterns, and evolutionary relationships. Phylogenetic and collinear analyses revealed that the VvGLRs… More >

Zhipeng Sheng, Jiasong Meng, Jun Tao*, Daqiu Zhao*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.11, pp. 3133-3147, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.028818 - 24 October 2023

    Abstract

Tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa Andr.) is a traditional Chinese flower, which prefers cool weather. However, high temperature in summer in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River restricts its growth and development. In this study, osmotic regulation, antioxidant enzyme activities, and photosynthetic characteristics of tree peony in response to high-temperature stress were investigated. The results showed that high-temperature stress had destroyed the cell membrane, manifested as the increased relative electrical conductivity and malondialdehyde content. Moreover, high-temperature stress led to excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species, thereby, activating antioxidant enzyme activities. Also, photosynthetic parameters and chlorophyll

Abstract Cyclophilin (CYP) plays an important role in plant response to stress, and OsCYP2, one gene of cyclophlilin family, is involved in auxin signal transduction and stress signaling in rice. However, the mechanism that OsCYP2 is involved in rice response to low temperature is still unclear. We identified a new OsCYP2 allelic mutant, lrl3, with fewer lateral roots, and the differences in shoot height, primary root length and adventitious root length increased with the growth process compared to the wild-type plant. Auxin signaling pathway was also affected and became insensitive to gravity. The transgenic rice plants with over-expression… More >

Abstract Low temperature is one of the adversities threatening the growth and development and reduces the yield of rubber trees. However, molecular mechanisms toward rubber trees in response to low temperature are largely unclear. In this study, 7,159 and 7,600 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in ‘Reyan 73397’ rubber trees. Through GO analysis, the catalytic activity was the representative of the GO term in the only DEGs at the two studied temperatures (room temperature and 4°C, respectively), while KEGG analysis showed that carbon metabolism was the most important grouping under the comparison of these two More >

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.3, pp. 583-598, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.018223 - 26 October 2021

Abstract Putrescine is reported to be necessary for cold acclimation under low-temperature stress. In this study, the effect of low-temperature on some physiological and biochemical parameters has been investigated using the green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The lipid peroxidation rate, amount of Rubisco protein, activities of antioxidant enzymes and gene expression of polyamine biosynthesis (odc2, and spd1), heat shock proteins (hsp70c, hsp90a, and hsp90c), and PSII repair mechanisms (psba, rep27, and tba1) were determined to understand the low-temperature response. Exogenous putrescine application significantly increased Rubisco protein concentration and catalase enzyme activities under low-temperature stress. Moreover, real-time RT-PCR results and gene expression analysis… More >

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.3, pp. 599-615, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.017881 - 26 October 2021

    Abstract

Paeonia ostii is an economically important oil crop, which has been widely cultivated in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China in recent years. Although P. ostii is highly adaptable to the environment, the prolonged high summer temperature in this region severely inhibits its growth, which adversely affects seed yield and quality. In this study, P. ostii plants were subjected to 20°C/15°C (day/night) and 40°C/35°C (day/night) temperatures for 15 days. The changes in physiological and biochemical indicators of P. ostii under high-temperature stress were initially investigated. The results showed that with the deepening of leaf

Abstract Seed priming has proved to be an effective pre-germination seed invigoration technique for different crops to improve seed and seedling performance under different abiotic stresses. In Bangladesh, winter rice is very often exposed to cold waves just after sowing in the nursery bed resulting in poor seed germination and seedling emergence, yellowish and thin seedlings production, and a very low survival rate. Seed priming may mitigate the cold stress during seed germination and seedling emergence and helps in the quality seedling production of winter rice. To evaluate the efficacy of different seed priming techniques in… More >
