    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.19, No.1, pp. 167-191, 2025, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2024.053190 - 15 November 2024

Abstract When the upper chord beam of the beam-string structure (BSS) is made of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST), its overall stiffness will change greatly with the construction of concrete placement, which will have an impact on the design of the tensioning plans and selection of control measures for the BSS. In order to accurately obtain the bending stiffness of CFST beam and clarify its impact on the mechanical properties of composite BSS during construction, the influence of some factors such as height-width ratio, wall thickness of steel tube, elasticity modulus of concrete, and friction coefficient on More >

On Broadband Continuum Modeling of Lattice Metamaterials

    Jinxing Liu1,*, Binying Wang1, Changqing Peng1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011544

Abstract Unlike classical condensed matters with the characteristic microstructural size far smaller than the undergoing wavelength, lattice metamaterials call for a kind of subwavelength continuum modeling, which should be able to provide successful predictions throughout the first Brillouin zone. We classify lattices into two groups. The first category stands for the mass-spring systems composed of dump masses and massless springs, for which three attempts have been made: the strain gradient continuum based on wavelength-dependent Taylor’s expansion [1, 2], Pade approximation [3] and Symbiotic Optimal Search (SOS) [4], respectively. The results of these newly developed models agree… More >

Topology Optimization of Mega-Casting Thin-Walled Structures of Vehicle Body with Stiffness Objective and Process Filling Constraints

    Jiayu Chen1, Yingchun Bai1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.3, pp. 1-2, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011393

Abstract Mega-casting techniques are widely used to manufacture large piece of thin-walled structures for vehicle body in Automotive industries, especially with the rapid growing electric vehicle market. Topology optimization is effective design method to reach higher mechanical performance yet lightweight potential for casting structures [1-3]. Most of existing works is focused on geometric-type casting constraints such as drawn angle, partion line, undercut, and enclose holes. However, the challenges in mega-casting arise from the complexities in the casting process such as filling and solidification, and the corresponding defects have larger influences on the structural performances [4-6]. Winston Wai Shing Ma1, Lei Zhang2,3, Junhao Ding1, Shuo Qu1, Xu Song1,*, Michael Yu Wang4,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011319

Abstract Elastically isotropic open-cell lattice metamaterials exhibit identical elastic properties along arbitrary directions, and are ideal candidates for applications with unknown primary loading directions. Their open-cell properties are preferred for additive manufacturing processes and multifunctional applications requiring mass and heat transfer. This presentation focuses on the design, simulation, fabrication, and experimental tests of elastically isotropic open-cell lattice metamaterials with superior stiffness. First, a family of elastically isotropic truss lattices are analytically devised through combining elementary cubic lattices with contrary elastic anisotropy. The proposed stretching-dominated truss lattices can reach nearly 1/3 of the Hashin-Shtrikman upper bounds at… More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.1, pp. 1-2, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09475

Abstract In recent years, the vehicle scanning method for bridge inspection has drawn much attention by researchers because of its simple operation and high efficiency [1]. Besides the natural frequency, modal modes and other information of bridges, damage can also be detected in this way [2]. For example, we proposed the passive tap-scan damage detection method [3], which scans the bridge with the tapping force generated by a toothed wheel, mimicking the hunting behavior of woodpeckers. In this talk, we will discuss two critical aspects related to the mechanism of this method. One is the quantitative… More >

Abstract Many titanium alloy subcomponents are subjected to fatigue loading in aerospace engineering, resulting in fatigue failure. The fatigue behavior of Ti2AlNb alloy subcomponents was investigated based on the Seeger fatigue life theory and the improved Lemaitre damage evolution theory. Firstly, the finite element models of the standard openhole specimen and Y-section subcomponents have been established by ABAQUS. The damage model parameters were determined by fatigue tests, and the reliability of fatigue life simulation results of the Ti2AlNb alloy standard open-hole specimen was verified. Meanwhile, the fatigue life of Ti2AlNb alloy Y-section subcomponents was predicted. Under the same More >

Analytical Investigation into the Rotational Performance of Glulam Bolted Beam-Column Connections under Coupled Bending Moment and Shear Force

    Xiaofeng Zhang1, Lisheng Luo2,*, Youfu Sun1, Xinyue Cui2, Yongqiang Zhang2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 2033-2054, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.023651 - 01 December 2022

Abstract Considering the glulam beam-column connection form and the number of bolts, monotonic loading test and finite element analysis was carried out on 9 connection specimens in 3 groups to study the rotational performance and failure mode of the connection. The test results revealed that compared with U-shaped connectors, T-shaped connectors can effectively improve the ductility of connections, and the increase in the number of bolts can reduce the initial stiffness and ductility of connections. By theoretical analysis, formulas for calculating the initial stiffness and ultimate moment of connections were deduced. Subsequently, the moment-rotation theoretical model More > Graphic Abstract

Computation of Stiffness and Damping Derivatives of an Ogive in a Limiting Case of Mach Number and Specific Heat Ratio

    Aysha Shabana1,2,*, Asha Crasta1, Sher Afghan Khan3, Abdul Aabid4, Muneer Baig4

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.5, pp. 1249-1267, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.023158 - 30 November 2022

Abstract This work aims to compute stability derivatives in the Newtonian limit in pitch when the Mach number tends to infinity. In such conditions, these stability derivatives depend on the Ogive’s shape and not the Mach number. Generally, the Mach number independence principle becomes effective from M = 10 and above. The Ogive nose is obtained through a circular arc on the cone surface. Accordingly, the following arc slopes are considered λ = 5, 10, 15, −5, −10, and −15. It is found that the stability derivatives decrease due to the growth in λ from 5 More >
