Abstract In video surveillance, anomaly detection requires training machine learning models on spatio-temporal video sequences. However, sometimes the video-only data is not sufficient to accurately detect all the abnormal activities. Therefore, we propose a novel audio-visual spatiotemporal autoencoder specifically designed to detect anomalies for video surveillance by utilizing audio data along with video data. This paper presents a competitive approach to a multi-modal recurrent neural network for anomaly detection that combines separate spatial and temporal autoencoders to leverage both spatial and temporal features in audio-visual data. The proposed model is trained to produce low reconstruction error… More >

Soil NOx Emission Prediction via Recurrent Neural Networks

    Zhaoan Wang1, Shaoping Xiao1,*, Cheryl Reuben2, Qiyu Wang2, Jun Wang2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.77, No.1, pp. 285-297, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.044366 - 31 October 2023

Abstract This paper presents designing sequence-to-sequence recurrent neural network (RNN) architectures for a novel study to predict soil NOx emissions, driven by the imperative of understanding and mitigating environmental impact. The study utilizes data collected by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop two distinct RNN predictive models: one built upon the long-short term memory (LSTM) and the other utilizing the gated recurrent unit (GRU). These models are fed with a combination of historical and anticipated air temperature, air moisture, and NOx emissions as inputs to forecast future NOx emissions. Both LSTM and GRU models can… More >

Bi-LSTM-Based Deep Stacked Sequence-to-Sequence Autoencoder for Forecasting Solar Irradiation and Wind Speed

    Neelam Mughees1,2, Mujtaba Hussain Jaffery1, Abdullah Mughees3, Anam Mughees4, Krzysztof Ejsmont5,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.75, No.3, pp. 6375-6393, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.038564 - 29 April 2023

Abstract Wind and solar energy are two popular forms of renewable energy used in microgrids and facilitating the transition towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. However, they are exceedingly unpredictable since they rely highly on weather and atmospheric conditions. In microgrids, smart energy management systems, such as integrated demand response programs, are permanently established on a step-ahead basis, which means that accurate forecasting of wind speed and solar irradiance intervals is becoming increasingly crucial to the optimal operation and planning of microgrids. With this in mind, a novel “bidirectional long short-term memory network” (Bi-LSTM)-based, deep stacked,… More >

Ext-ICAS: A Novel Self-Normalized Extractive Intra Cosine Attention Similarity Summarization

    P. Sharmila1,*, C. Deisy1, S. Parthasarathy2

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.45, No.1, pp. 377-393, 2023, DOI:10.32604/csse.2023.027481 - 16 August 2022

Abstract With the continuous growth of online news articles, there arises the necessity for an efficient abstractive summarization technique for the problem of information overloading. Abstractive summarization is highly complex and requires a deeper understanding and proper reasoning to come up with its own summary outline. Abstractive summarization task is framed as seq2seq modeling. Existing seq2seq methods perform better on short sequences; however, for long sequences, the performance degrades due to high computation and hence a two-phase self-normalized deep neural document summarization model consisting of improvised extractive cosine normalization and seq2seq abstractive phases has been proposed… More >

Efficient Image Captioning Based on Vision Transformer Models

    Samar Elbedwehy1,*, T. Medhat2, Taher Hamza3, Mohammed F. Alrahmawy3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.73, No.1, pp. 1483-1500, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.029313 - 18 May 2022

Abstract Image captioning is an emerging field in machine learning. It refers to the ability to automatically generate a syntactically and semantically meaningful sentence that describes the content of an image. Image captioning requires a complex machine learning process as it involves two sub models: a vision sub-model for extracting object features and a language sub-model that use the extracted features to generate meaningful captions. Attention-based vision transformers models have a great impact in vision field recently. In this paper, we studied the effect of using the vision transformers on the image captioning process by evaluating… More >

AttEF: Convolutional LSTM Encoder-Forecaster with Attention Module for Precipitation Nowcasting

    Wei Fang1,2,*, Lin Pang1, Weinan Yi1, Victor S. Sheng3

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.30, No.2, pp. 453-466, 2021, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2021.016589 - 11 August 2021

Abstract Precipitation nowcasting has become an essential technology underlying various public services ranging from weather advisories to citywide rainfall alerts. The main challenge facing many algorithms is the high non-linearity and temporal-spatial complexity of the radar image. Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (ConvLSTM) is appropriate for modeling spatiotemporal variations as it integrates the convolution operator into recurrent state transition functions. However, the technical characteristic of encoding the input sequence into a fixed-size vector cannot guarantee that ConvLSTM maintains adequate sequence representations in the information flow, which affects the performance of the task. In this paper, we propose… More >
