    Xin Zou1, Jieyu Zhang1, Ting Cheng1, Yangyang Guo1, Xiao Han1, Han Liu1, Yuxing Qin1, Jie Li2, Dabing Xiang1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.4, pp. 699-712, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.048469 - 29 April 2024

Abstract To mitigate the wastage of seed resources and reduce the usage of pesticides and fertilizers, seed coating agents have gained popularity. This study employs single-factor and multi-index orthogonal experimental design methods to investigate the seed coating formula and physical properties of Tartary buckwheat. The specific effects of each component on Tartary buckwheat seed germination are analyzed. The findings reveal that the seed coating agent formulated with 1.5% polyvinyl alcohol, 0.15% sodium alginate, 0.2% op-10, 0.1% polyacrylamide, 8% colorant, 3% ammonium sulfate, 1% potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and 0.15% carbendazim exhibits the most effective coating. It demonstrates… More >

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.89, No.3, pp. 645-656, 2020, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2020.010532 - 22 June 2020

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of various presowing treatments on the germinability (final germination percentage) and germination rate of loquat seeds in order to increase seedling production in nurseries (applied research) as well as provide answers for important physiological issues related to loquat seeds and their seed coat (basic research). Three experiments were carried out with various pre-sowing treatments. These treatments included full or partial removal of seed coat (perisperm), partial cutting of cotyledons as well as moist chilling at 5°C for 13 days and/or soaking the seeds in water… More >

Seed morphology, presence of areoles and water entry at imbibition of Vicia dasycarpa Ten. cv. Tolse F.C.A

    Perissé P1 y GM Tourn2

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.84, No.1, pp. 184-189, 2015, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2015.84.184

Abstract The morphological characteristics of the seeds of Vicia dasycarpa Ten. cv. Tolse FCA were studied in relation to the area of imbibition water entry and were considered the presence of areoles. Seeds were analyzed using a stereo, optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The determination of the initial water entry area was carried out by immersing the seeds in a solution of tetrazolium (1%). This study showed that this species has seeds with a halo framing the hilum, an inconspicuous dry aril and a deltoid micropyle. The seedcoat pattern is papillose. The tracheid bar is surrounded More >

Anatomical and chemical characteristics of the seed coat of Medicago sativa L. (alfalfa) cv. Baralfa 85 seeds and their association with seed dormancy

    Galussi AA1, JA Argüello2, MM Cerana2, M Maximino3, ME Moya1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.84, No.1, pp. 163-175, 2015, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2015.84.163

Abstract Seeds of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) can exhibit seedcoat imposed dormancy, which produces hard seeds within a seed lot. These seeds do not germinate because they do not imbibe water due to a barrier to water entry in the seed coat. The aim of this work was to analyze the anatomical and chemical characteristics of the testa of alfalfa seeds with respect to water permeability levels. The anatomy of seeds of the cv. Baralfa 85 was studied and structural substances, polyphenols, tannins and cutin present in the testa of seeds of different water permeability levels were… More >

Germination and vigour of Crotalaria juncea L. (Fabaceae) seed morphotypes

    Pascualides AL y NS Ateca

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.82, pp. 313-319, 2013, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2013.82.313

Abstract Crotalaria juncea L. (Fabaceae) is an annual herbaceous species native to India. Their seeds have polymorphism in the seed coat color and different seed sizes. Seeds were grouped according to their seed coat color into uniform (dark gray seeds) and variegated (brown mottled seeds), to evaluate the vigour of C. juncea seed morphotypes. They were also classified into small (< 5mm length) and big seeds (>5 mm length). The 1000 seed weight, germination percentage, length and seedling dry weight, electrical conductivity and field emergence were evaluated. The results showed that uniform seeds had greater weight than those… More >

Seed germination after fire: a study with a plant inhabiting non-fire-prone areas

    Menezes LCCR de1, MN Rossi2

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.80, pp. 153-160, 2011, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2011.80.153

Abstract After a fire event, germination of seeds with hard coats can be enhanced. In the present study, we investigated whether germination of Mimosa bimucronata (DC.) Kuntze (Fabaceae) seeds, which present hard coats, is increased after fire, even though these trees usually occur in damp areas, where fire is a transient event. Fire events were manipulated in trays filled with soil covered with different amounts of dry grasses, characterizing three treatments: a) 0g (control group); b) 300g, and c) 450g of dry grass. Burning treatments were applied to seeds positioned either on the soil surface or buried… More >
