Abstract Castor, scientifically known as Ricinus communis L., is among the top ten oil crops globally. It is considered a renewable resource and is commonly referred to as ‘green oil’. Castor seeds contain castor oil as their main component, which is predominantly composed of ricinoleic acid. This study utilized RNAi technology to silence the NPC6 gene in NO.2129 castor, resulting in the creation of mutant plants L1 and L2. The weight of 100 dry seed kernels from L1 and L2 exceeds that from NO.2129. The crude fat and ricinoleic acid levels of L1 and L2 were higher than… More >

Biobased Vanillic Acid and Ricinoleic Acid: Building Blocks for Fully Renewable Copolyesters

Claudio Gioia*, Maria Barbara Banella, Grazia Totaro, Micaela Vannini, Paola Marchese, Martino Colonna, Laura Sisti, Annamaria Celli

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.6, No.1, pp. 126-135, 2018, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2017.634191

Abstract New fully biobased polyether/esters have been synthesized by a one-pot polymerization reaction of ricinoleic acid (RA), vanillic acid (VA) and ethylene carbonate (EC). In particular, EC selectively reacts with the phenolic group of VA to obtain in-situ 4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-3-methoxybenzoate (EV), suitable for subsequent copolymerization with RA. The procedure was carried out in a single step, without any solvent. Chemical structure and thermal properties of the new materials were studied in order to explore relationships between composition and final performances. The combination of EV, bearing a rigid aromatic structure, with RA, characterized by high flexibility and potential More >

Seed characteristics and fatty acid composition of castor (Ricinus communis L.) varieties in Northeast China

    Huang FL1,2, GL Zhu2,3, YS Chen1,2, FJ Meng4, M Peng1,4, XF Chen1,2, ZB He3, ZY Zhang3, YJ Chen1,2

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.84, No.1, pp. 26-33, 2015, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2015.84.026

Abstract Oil content and fatty acid composition were investigated on 12 castor varieties and strains by using the soxhlet extraction method and capillary gas chromatography. This was made to provide a reference and theoretical basis for castorbean breeding with high oil content, determine variability of seed compounds for breeding purposes, and broaden chemical material choices. Results revealed that crude fat percentage in seeds ranged from 18.91 to 35.84% with an average of 25.91%; the absolute content of ricinoleic acid varied between 171.65 g/kg and 314.03 g/kg with an average of 222.43 g/kg, and kernel crude fat… More >
