Abstract Indonesia, with its vast forested regions, has experienced significant deforestation, adversely affecting the wood industry. As a result, alternative sources of lignocellulosic biomass are required to mitigate this impact. Among the abundant lignocellulosic raw materials in Indonesia, particularly in Sumatra, bamboo stands out as a promising substitute. Bamboo is a highly versatile resource, suitable for various applications, including its use as a composite raw material to replace traditional wood-based products. This research work aimed to investigate and evaluate the characteristics—morphology, anatomy, physical and mechanical properties, chemical composition, starch content, and natural resistance—of three bamboo species:… More >

Abstract Over the last decade, the oriented strand board (OSB) market presented meaningful growth. However, as a wood-based product, because of its anatomical structure and chemical composition, OSB can be damaged by biodeterioration agents. Given that, the biodeterioration of OSB panels must be investigated to improve its durability. In this way, this work analyses the biological resistance against termites (Cryptotermes brevis and Nasutitermes corniger) of heat-treated OSB panels made with Eucalyptus wood glued with vegetable-based polyurethane-an eco-friendly and sustainable adhesive derived from castor oil. Various panels were produced with different layers compositions (face:core:face of 25:50:25 and 30:40:30) in wood… More > Graphic Abstract

    Abstract

Agave salmiana ash and poultry eggshell powder as CaO sources were used for obtaining nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HAP). The synthesis was carried out by the Green Chemistry Hydrothermal Biosynthesis at 180°C with a pH of 5, by reacting CaO from Agave Salmiana ash and Eggshell powder, with dibasic calcium phosphate (CaHPO4•2H2O) in an aqueous solution, with Aloe barbadensis extract. The product was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The size and shape of the hydroxyapatite particles changed dramatically in the presence of Aloe barbadensis. Large crystals of Hydroxyapatite were observed

Rapeseed Oil as Feedstock for High Functionality Polyol Synthesis

    M. Kirpluks1*, D. Kalnbunde1, Z. Walterova2, U. Cabulis1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.5, No.3-4, pp. 258-270, 2017, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2017.634116

Abstract In this study, polyols with high average functionality were synthesized from a renewable resource, rapeseed oil, as raw material for rigid PU foam production. A well-known method of rapeseed oil fatty acid double bond epoxidation was used to introduce oxirane rings into rapeseed oil structure. The temperature influence on epoxidation reaction conversion rate was studied by volumetric and FTIR spectra analysis. After epoxidation of rapeseed oil, an oxirane ring-opening reaction was carried out to obtain high functionality polyols. Diethylene glycol, a conventional oxirane ring-opening reagent, was compared to amine-based polyfunctional alcohols, diethanolamine and triethanolamine. The More >

Mechanical and Thermal Properties of High-Density Rigid Polyurethane Foams from Renewable Resources

    M. Kirpluks1*, U. Cabulis1, A. Ivdre1, M. Kuranska2, M. Zieleniewska3, M. Auguscik3

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 86-100, 2016, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2015.634132

Abstract The most common sustainable solution for polyurethane (PU) materials is their production using renewable resources. Polyols derived from biomass and recycled polymers are the most promising way to do that. This study compares five different sustainable polyols as a possible raw material for production of highdensity rigid PU foams for automotive application. The goal of our study was to show that biobased polyols are a suitable replacement for polyols derived from petrochemical products. The influence of the chemical structure of polyols on the PU polymer matrix and foam properties was investigated. Two sources of PU… More >
