TIANYUN HAN#, ZHONG LI#, LUONING ZHANG, LINSHEN XIE*

    BIOCELL, Vol.48, No.11, pp. 1625-1638, 2024, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2024.055029 - 07 November 2024

Abstract Objective: The study aimed to explore the protective mechanism of Ganoderic acid A (GAA) in renal fibrosis and to verify that GAA can ameliorate renal fibrosis by regulating the Niemann-pick C1-like 1 (NPC1L1) gene. Methods: Transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-β1) was used to treat Human Kidney-2 (HK-2) cells to establish a renal fibrosis model. The differentially expressed genes in the control (CTRL) group, TGF-β1 group, and TGF-β1 + GAA group were screened via transcriptome sequencing technology and verified by qPCR and Western blot experiments. The NPC1L1 gene overexpression plasmid was constructed. The expression levels of N-cad, E-cad,… More >

Abstract Molasses can serve as a natural adhesive for plywood and particleboard. However, several disadvantages remain, including lower dimensional stability and low bonding strength compared to other adhesives. Therefore, modifications are needed to use molasses as an adhesive for plywood. This research aims to improve bio-based molasses (MO) adhesive for plywood using citric acid (CA) adhesive. In addition, this research aims to analyze the effect of adding citric acid and to investigate the optimum hot-pressing temperature to produce the best quality plywood. In the first stage, the molasses and citric acid were combined in a ratio… More > Graphic Abstract

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.80, No.2, pp. 3085-3106, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2024.051709 - 15 August 2024

Abstract The research aims to improve the performance of image recognition methods based on a description in the form of a set of keypoint descriptors. The main focus is on increasing the speed of establishing the relevance of object and etalon descriptions while maintaining the required level of classification efficiency. The class to be recognized is represented by an infinite set of images obtained from the etalon by applying arbitrary geometric transformations. It is proposed to reduce the descriptions for the etalon database by selecting the most significant descriptor components according to the information content criterion.… More >

Abstract Background: Oleanolic acid (OA), a pentacyclic triterpenoid exhibiting specific anti-cancer properties and highly effective antioxidant activity, was isolated from traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. Conversely, the OA that impacts colon cancer (CC) cells and its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Methods: The cytotoxic effect of OA alone or OA-5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) combination on normal and CC cells was analyzed by methyl thiazolyl diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT). Then, the impact of OA on CC cell lines (LoVo and HT-29) proliferation and stemness were measured using colon formation and tumorsphere formation assays. BIOCELL, Vol.48, No.4, pp. 653-664, 2024, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2024.044856 - 09 April 2024

Abstract Background: During Enterovirus type 71 (EV71) infection, the structural viral protein 1 (VP1) activates endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress associated with peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22) accumulation and induces autophagy. However, the specific mechanism behind this process remains elusive. Methods: In this research, we used the VP1-overexpressing mouse Schwann cells (SCs) models co-transfected with a PMP22 silencing or Autocrine motility factor receptor (AMFR/gp78) overexpressing vector to explore the regulation of gp78 on PMP22 and its relationship with autophagy and apoptosis. Results: The activity of gp78 could be influenced by EV71-VP1, leading to a decrease in the ubiquitination… More >

Abstract Indonesia is one of the largest coconut-producing countries in the world. The utilization of coconut shell waste into briquettes will increase the selling value and become a great export opportunity. However, the effect of adhesives on the quality of coconut shell charcoal briquettes made using screw extruder machine has not been widely studied. This study aims to determine the effect of adhesive type on the quality of coconut shell charcoal briquettes. The process of fabricating briquettes in this study included crushing, mixing, blending, pressing, and drying. In the mixing process, 3 types of adhesives were… More > Graphic Abstract

    Oncology Research, Vol.32, No.3, pp. 489-502, 2024, DOI:10.32604/or.2023.046676 - 06 February 2024

Abstract Different from necrosis, apoptosis, autophagy and other forms of cell death, ferroptosis is a mechanism that catalyzes lipid peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids under the action of iron divalent or lipoxygenase, leading to cell death. Apatinib is currently used in the third-line standard treatment of advanced gastric cancer, targeting the anti-angiogenesis pathway. However, Apatinib-mediated ferroptosis in vascular endothelial cells has not been reported yet. Tumor-secreted exosomes can be taken up into target cells to regulate tumor development, but the mechanism related to vascular endothelial cell ferroptosis has not yet been discovered. Here, we show that More >
