Fabrication of Core-Shell Hydrogel Bead Based on Sodium Alginate and Chitosan for Methylene Blue Adsorption

    Xiaoyu Chen*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.12, No.4, pp. 815-826, 2024, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2024.048470 - 12 June 2024

Abstract A novel core-shell hydrogel bead was fabricated for effective removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions. The core, made of sodium alginate-g-polyacrylamide and attapulgite nanofibers, was cross-linked by Calcium ions (Ca). The shell, composed of a chitosan/activated carbon mixture, was then coated onto the core. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the grafting polymerization of acrylamide onto sodium alginate. Scanning electron microscopy images showed the core-shell structure. The core exhibited a high water uptake ratio, facilitating the diffusion of methylene blue into the core. During the diffusion process, the methylene blue was first adsorbed by More > Graphic Abstract

Strong and Tough PAm/SA Hydrogel with Highly Strain Sensitivity

Lingqin Zhang, Qifeng Jiang, Yiming Zhao, Jie Yuan, Xiaoying Zha, Haojiang Xie, Fankai Kong, Xingliang Xiong*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.2, pp. 415-430, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.016650 - 30 August 2021

Abstract The hydrogel is a preferred material for flexible wearable sensors. In practical application, it should have high-efficiency mechanical toughness and self-healing performance. Besides, hydrogel requires good affinity and adhesion because of its contact with the skin. In this experiment, we made an ultra-tough hydrogel with excellent cell affinity and adhesion. We used sodium alginate (SA) and polyacrylamide (PAm) mixture as a flexible base fluid. Polydopamine reduce graphene oxide (prGO) was used as conductive nanofiller, and then PAm-prGO-SA semi-interpenetrating network hydrogel was formed through Am radical polymerization. The presence of prGO endows the hydrogels with excellent More >

Improved Geotechnical Behavior of an Expansive Soil Amended with Cationic Polyacrylamide

    Shengquan Zhou1, Minjie Shi1,*, Wei Chen1, Yongfei Zhang1, Weijian Wang1, Haojin Zhang1, Dongwei Li2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.9, No.11, pp. 1941-1957, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.015693 - 04 June 2021

Abstract The characteristics of soil treated with cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) mass content of 0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1% were investigated through a series of laboratory tests to explore the practical engineering effect of an expansive soil amended with environmental protection material CPAM. The results indicate that with the increasing CPAM content, the liquid limit and plasticity index of soil decrease, the plastic limit increases, and the free swelling ratio and loaded swelling ratio decrease. Besides, the improved soil has less disintegrating property and better water stability. The shear strength increases as the content increases,… More > Graphic Abstract

    Abstract

The preparation and application of functional hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides have always been a hot research topic. In this study, using acrylamide (AM) monomer, N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as cross-linking agent, potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) as initiator, in the presence of natural polysaccharide sodium alginate (SA), the PAM/SA hydrogel was prepared by free radical polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), swelling performance tests, scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UV-visible spectrophotometer, mechanical property measurements were carried out to analyze the composition, morphology, and performance of the hydrogels. The swelling behavior, dye adsorption performance, and the
