    Abstract A mathematical model for unsteady electro- and aerodynamic processes in the presence of a plasma actuator has been elaborated through physical modeling of the dielectric barrier discharge. A specialized computational fluid dynamics package has been developed accordingly in order to calculate steady and unsteady laminar and turbulent flows. For the numerical simulation of the dielectric barrier discharge, in particular, two equations have been added to the Navier-Stokes equations and solved.     Abstract Maize plants infected with Spiroplasma kunkelii show symptoms similar to that of plants in a magnesium-deficient soil, and it has been shown that the spiroplasma alters the plants’ magnesium absorption. In the current study we compared changes associated to either spiroplasma infection, two soil magnesium levels and their combinations. Plant symptoms were recorded and correlated with transmission electron microscopy observations. Plants grown on a high magnesium treatment showed no macroscopical alterations nor organelle ultrastructural alterations, while plants on a low magnesium treatment showed macroscopical vein yellowing and, ultrastructurally, they had most chloroplasts and mitochondrial membranes altered.     Abstract The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of a variety of plasma treatments on the surface properties of an epoxy-based composite material and to establish a relationship between these properties and the subsequent mechanical behaviour of adhesively bonded joints.     Abstract A competitive internal control (IC) adapted to RT-PCR in-house assay was developed for HCV RNA detection in human pooled plasma. Also, it was applied in a multiplex RT-PCR for the HIV-1 and HCV RNA screening in human pooled plasma and plasma-derived products. A 258-bp PCR product from the 5´noncoding region of HCV genome was obtained. A competitive IC template was constructed by inserting a 52-bp double strand sequence into the NheI site of the 258-bp amplicon.     Abstract We have designed and evaluated a radial-flow bioreactor for three-dimensional liver carcinoma cell culture on a new porous coated scaffold. We designed a culture chamber where a radial flow of culture medium was continuously delivered through it. Once this system was established, flow was simulated using flow dynamics software based on numeric methods to solve Navier-Stockes flow equations.     Abstract Low pressure plasma polymer films were synthesized using pyrrole and allylamine monomers and adding iodine was used (or not) for the reaction in both cases. They were polymerized on glass substrates under the same reaction conditions. Polymerization of allylamine was also studied at different operating powers.     Effects of Cold Plasma on Surface, Thermal and Antimicrobial Release Properties of Chitosan Film

    Abstract This work aims to analyze the effects of cold atmospheric air plasma treatment of antimicrobial chitosan film with different levels of thymol. Optical characterization of the dielectric barrier discharge showed the generation of reactive nitrogen and oxygen species by the system. A significant increase (p < 0.05) in the surface roughness was observed after cold plasma treatment of the films. No significant difference (p > 0.05) was observed in the thermal profile of the plasma-treated films. A significant increase (p < 0.05) in the thymol diffusion coefficient was observed after the plasma treatment for all the active films. More >

    Plasma Etching to Enhance Visibility of Nano Particles in Nanocomposites

    Abstract The exfoliation and dispersion of nanoclay (2% by weight) and nanovermiculite (2% by weight) particles in a polymer matrix is analyzed using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) after a low temperature air plasma etch. The plasma etch preferentially removes the polymer to expose the nanoparticles. Both Argon and air have been used as the etching media to study the etching process. SEM analysis illustrate the results of the etching in flat and edge surfaces of both nanoclay (MMT) and nanovermiculite (VMT) filled polymer.
