Plasticizing Effect of Camellia oleifera Seed-Oil-Based Plasticizer on PVC Material Modification

    Qinghua Lao1,#, Hui Zhang1,#, Zhihong Wang2, Puyou Jia3, Yongquan Li1,*, Qiaoguang Li4,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.7, pp. 3025-3041, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.026646 - 05 June 2023

Abstract In this study, as the plasticizer, Camellia oleifera seed-oil-based cyclohexyl ester (COSOCE) was prepared by the reaction of cyclohexene oxide and refined C. oleifera seed oil (RCOSO) obtained by acidification hydrolysis after saponification. In addition, the structure of the target product was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. COSOCE was used as plasticizer-modified polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes. The structure of the COSOCE-modified PVC membranes were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The properties of the COSOCE-modified PVC membrane were characterized by contact angle measurements, universal… More >

Plant Oil-Based Waterborne Polyurethanes: A Brief Review

    Verónica L. Mucci1, M. E. Victoria Hormaiztegui2, Mirta I. Aranguren1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.6, pp. 579-601, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.09455 - 12 May 2020

Abstract The increasing pressure from consumers and policy makers to reduce the use of synthetic polymers, whose production contributes to the depletion of non-renewable resources and are usually non- biodegradable, has prompted the efforts to find suitable bio-based sources for the production of polymers. Vegetable oils have been a frequently spotted in this search because they are versatile, highly available and a low cost liquid biosource, which can be used in the synthesis of a wide plethora of different polymers and reactive monomers. Following the same idea of reducing the environmental stress, the traditional polyurethanes that… More >

Tribological Behavior of Plant Oil-Based Extreme Pressure Lubricant Additive in Water-Ethylene Glycol Liquid

    Haiyang Ding1, Xiaohua Yang1, Lina Xu1, Mei Li1, Shouhai Li1, Jianling Xia1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.12, pp. 1391-1401, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.07207

Abstract A water-soluble lubricant additive (RSOPE) was prepared by esterification reaction using fatty acid from rubber seed oil. The RSOPE was added into water-ethylene glycol (W-EG) solution as lubricant additive. Dispersion stability and rheological properties were investigated. We used a four-ball tribotester to assess the lubrication performance of W-EG based fluid with the RSOPE additive. The stainless-steel surface was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Good dispersion stability was observed in the RSOPE/W-EG solutions. Furthermore, nonNewtonian fluid behavior at low shear rates and Newtonian fluid behavior at high shear rates was More >

Blend of Polyhydroxyalkanoates Synthesized By Lipase Positive Bacteria From Plant Oils

Nasir Javaid, Rida Batool, Nazia Jamil*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.5, pp. 463-476, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.00023

Abstract A total of 5 biochemically characterized lipase positive bacterial strains were screened for Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) production by Nile blue staining and confirmation was done by Sudan Black B. PHA production ability for all strains was optimized followed by time profiling calculation and comparison via using glucose and two plant oils i.e., canola and mustard oil. Quantitative analysis showed that glucose can serve as a carbon source for maximum biomass (2.5 g/L CDW for strain 5) and PHA production (70.3% for strain 2). PHA produced by strain 2 was further analyzed for its chemical composition and… More >

Conductive Polymer Composites Synthesized from Diacetylene-Functionalized Linseed Oil and MWCNT: Gamma Irradiation and Organic Vapor Sensing

    A. Ramírez-Jiménez1*, S. Hernández López1, E. Bucio2, E. Vigueras Santiago1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.5, No.2, pp. 132-144, 2017, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2016.634138

Abstract Epoxidized linseed oil (ELO) was synthesized and functionalized with propargylamine (PA) or 3-ethynylaniline (EA) and the products were crosslinked to obtain the diacetylene-functionalized epoxidized linseed oil polymers which were used as matrices in the preparation of the composites with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Electrical resistance at percentages between 4 and 20 wt/wt% of filler was measured and the percolation threshold was calculated, obtaining 1.2 and 1.7% for the composites with EA and PA respectively. Low critical concentration evidenced a good dispersion of the MWCNTs without necessity of any modification. The final products were used in More >
