Enhancing Thermal Performance of Building Envelopes Using Hemp Wool and Wood Wool with Phase Change Materials

    Salma Kouzzi1,*, Mouniba Redah1, Souad Morsli2, Mohammed El Ganaoui3, Mohammed Lhassane Lahlaouti1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.12, pp. 2741-2755, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.055890 - 23 December 2024

Abstract This study investigates the potential for enhancing the thermal performance of external walls insulation in warmer climates through the combination of phase change materials (PCMs) and bio-based materials, specifically hemp wool and wood wool. Experimental tests using the heat flow method (HFM), and numerical simulations with ANSYS Fluent software were conducted to assess the dynamic thermal distribution and fluid-mechanical aspects of phase change materials (PCMs) within composite walls. The results demonstrate a notable reduction in peak indoor temperatures, achieving a 58% reduction with hemp wool with a close 40% reduction with wood wool when combined More >

PHOTOVOLTAIC VAPOR COMPRESSION AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM WITH PHASE CHANGE MATERIAL (PCM) STORAGE TANK

Ghaith Yahya Abusaibaaa , Kamaruzzaman Sopiana,*, Hasila Jarimia , Adnan Ibrahima, Saffa Riffatb

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.20, pp. 1-6, 2023, DOI:10.5098/hmt.20.21

Abstract This study will demonstrate the performance of a photovoltaic (PV) powered vapour compression cooling system connected to a Phase Change Material (PCM) storage tank. Three options were studied, namely (a) PV vapour compression with a PCM storage tank and an air-conditioned room with chilled water circulation with transparent membrane/desiccant; (b) PV vapour compression with a PCM storage tank and an air-conditioned room with chilled air dehumidification; and (c) PV vapour compression with a PCM storage tank and an air-conditioned room chilled by combined water circulation, a transparent membrane/desiccant, and air duct dehumidification. Simulation using TRNSYS,… More >

Performance of a Phase Change Material Battery in a Transparent Building

Peter van den Engel1,*, Michael Malin2, Nikhilesh Kodur Venkatesh1, Luigi Antonio de Araujo Passos1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.3, pp. 783-805, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2022.021962 - 29 September 2022

Abstract This research evaluates the performance of a Phase Change Material (PCM) battery integrated into the climate system of a new transparent meeting center. The main research questions are: a. “Can the performance of the battery be calculated?” and b. “Can the battery reduce the heating and cooling energy demand in a significant way?” The first question is answered in this document. In order to be able to answer the second question, especially the way the heat loading in winter should be improved, then more research is necessary. In addition to the thermal battery, which consists… More > Graphic Abstract

Simulation of the Hygrothermal Behavior of a Building Envelope Based on Phase Change Materials and a Bio-Based Concrete

    Dongxia Wu1, Mourad Rahim1, Wendong Li1, Mohammed El Ganaoui1,*, Rachid Bennacer2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.18, No.5, pp. 1483-1494, 2022, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2022.021917 - 27 May 2022

Abstract Phase Change Materials (PCMs) have high thermal inertia, and hemp concrete (HC), a bio-based concrete, has strong hygroscopic behavior. In previous studies, PCM has been extensively combined with many materials, however, most of these studies focused on thermal properties while neglecting hygroscopic aspects. In this study, the two materials have been combined into a building envelope and the related hygrothermal properties have been studied. In particular, numerical studies have been performed to investigate the temperature and relative humidity behavior inside the HC, and the effect of adding PCM on the hygrothermal behavior of the HC.… More >

A Controlled Conditions of Dynamic Cold Storage Using Nano fluid as PCM

    Bin Liu1, Zhaodan Yang1, Yahui Wang1, Rachid Bennacer1,2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 37-47, 2017, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2017.013.037

Abstract The dynamic thermal history of storage product system is related to the insulation and also to the inertia. Use a new porous media doped with nanofluid PCM to improve the system efficiency. The analysis of the porous sponge thickness with 8 mm, 16 mm and 20 mm, the integrated nanofluids with 0.1%, 0.15% and 0.2%, the mass of the PCM and the initial temperature of the stored product with -1°C, 4°C, 12°C is achieved in order to underline the advantages of the new saturated porous media (sponges) with the phase change material (PCM) /Al2O3-H2O nanofluid.
