    Energy Engineering, Vol.122, No.12, pp. 5021-5037, 2025, DOI:10.32604/ee.2025.072991 - 27 November 2025

Abstract In Saharan climates, greenhouses face extreme diurnal temperature fluctuations that generate thermal stress, reduce crop productivity, and hinder sustainable agricultural practices. Passive thermal storage using Phase Change Materials (PCM) is a promising solution to stabilize microclimatic conditions. This study aims to evaluate experimentally and numerically the effectiveness of PCM integration for moderating greenhouse temperature fluctuations under Saharan climatic conditions. Two identical greenhouse prototypes were constructed in Ghardaïa, Algeria: a reference greenhouse and a PCM-integrated greenhouse using calcium chloride hexahydrate (CaCl2·6H2O). Thermal performance was assessed during a five-day experimental period (7–11 May 2025) under severe ambient conditions.… More > Graphic Abstract

    Jian Xia1,2, Xianzhong Hu1, Yan Li1, Wei Zhang3,*

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.19, No.6, pp. 1489-1506, 2025, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2025.065997 - 17 November 2025

Abstract Incorporating microencapsulated phase change materials (MPCM) into mortar enhances building thermal energy storage for energy savings but severely degrades compressive strength by replacing sand and creating pores. This study innovatively addresses this critical limitation by introducing nano-silicon (NS) as a modifier to fill pores and promote hydration in MPCM mortar. Twenty-five mixes with varying NS content from 0 to 4 weight percent and different MPCM contents were comprehensively tested for flowability, compressive strength, thermal conductivity, thermal energy storage via Differential Scanning Calorimetry, and microstructure via Scanning Electron Microscopy. Key quantitative results showed MPCM reduced mortar… More >

Rafah H. Zaidan*, Najim A. Jasim

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.23, No.5, pp. 1595-1620, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2025.068205 - 31 October 2025

Abstract This paper presents a comprehensive experimental and numerical investigation of radiant floor heating (RFH) systems integrated with phase change material (PCM)-based thermal energy storage (TES). The study compares two underfloor pipe configurations: double serpentine and spiral. It also looks at how well a paraffin wax PCM system works with compact heat exchanger-type TES units during winter in Iraq. Key performance indicators including discharge temperature, heat transfer rate, liquid fraction evolution, and temperature uniformity were assessed through in situ experimental measurements and ANSYS fluent simulations. Results demonstrate that the spiral design provides slightly more uniform temperature distribution… More >

    Energy Engineering, Vol.122, No.11, pp. 4523-4539, 2025, DOI:10.32604/ee.2025.068480 - 27 October 2025

Abstract The local overheating issue is a serious threat to the safe operation of data centers (DCs). The chip-level liquid cooling with pool boiling is expected to solve this problem. The effect of nano configuration and surface wettability on the boiling characteristics of copper surfaces is studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The argon is chosen as the coolant, and the wall temperature is 300 K. The main findings and innovations are as follows. (1) Compared to the smooth surface and fin surface, the cylindrical nano cavity obtains the superior boiling performance with earlier onset of… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract Refrigeration systems are essential across various sectors, including food preservation, medical storage, and climate control. However, their high energy consumption and environmental impact necessitate innovative solutions to enhance efficiency while minimizing energy usage. This paper investigates the integration of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) into a vapor compression refrigeration system to enhance energy efficiency and temperature regulation for food preservation. A multifunctional prototype was tested under two configurations: (1) a standard thermally insulated room, and (2) the same room augmented with eutectic plates filled with either Glaceol (−10°C melting point) or distilled water (0°C melting point).… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract In order to address the synergistic optimization of energy efficiency improvement in the waste incineration power plant (WIPP) and renewable energy accommodation, an electricity-hydrogen-waste multi-energy system integrated with phase change material (PCM) thermal storage is proposed. First, a thermal energy management framework is constructed, combining PCM thermal storage with the alkaline electrolyzer (AE) waste heat recovery and the heat pump (HP), while establishing a PCM-driven waste drying system to enhance the efficiency of waste incineration power generation. Next, a flue gas treatment method based on purification-separation-storage coordination is adopted, achieving spatiotemporal decoupling between waste incineration… More >
