A Novel ISSA–DELM Model for Predicting Rock Mass Permeability

    Chen Xing1, Leihua Yao1,*, Yingdong Wang2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.140, No.3, pp. 2825-2848, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2024.049330

Abstract In pumped storage projects, the permeability of rock masses is a crucial parameter in engineering design and construction. The rock mass permeability coefficient (K) is influenced by various geological parameters, and previous studies aimed to establish an accurate relationship between K and geological parameters. This study uses the improved sparrow search algorithm (ISSA) to optimize the parameter settings of the deep extreme learning machine (DELM), constructing a prediction model with flexible parameter selection and high accuracy. First, the Spearman method is applied to analyze the correlation between geological parameters. A sample database is built by comprehensively… More >

Numerical Simulation of Vacuum Preloading for Chemically Conditioned Municipal Sludge

    Wenwei Li1, Xinjie Zhan2,*, Baotian Wang1, Jinyu Zuo1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 363-378, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.022254

Abstract Municipal sludge is a sedimentation waste produced during the wastewater process in sewage treatment plants. Among recent studies, pilot and field tests showed that chemical conditioning combined with vacuum preloading can effectively treat municipal sludge. To further understand the drainage and consolidation characteristics of the conditioning sludge during vacuum preloading, a large deformation nonlinear numerical simulation model based on the equal strain condition was developed to simulate and analyze the pilot and field tests, whereas the simulation results were not satisfactory. The results of the numerical analysis of the pilot test showed that the predicted… More >

A Review of Test Methods for the Determination of the Permeability Coefficient of Gravelly Soils Used for Embankment Dams

    Zhenggang Zhan1, Han Chen2,3, Yanyi Zhang2,3, Ruilin Cheng1, Gang Deng2,3,*

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.18, No.1, pp. 131-144, 2022, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2022.017536

Abstract The factors influencing the permeability coefficient of gravelly soils used for the development of embankment dams (core wall) are analyzed. Such factors include (but are not limited to) soil size, anisotropy, density and boundary effects. A review of the literature is conducted and new directions of research are proposed. In such a framework, it is shown that gravelly soil with controlled density and vertical stress should be used to optimize the measurement of the vertical and horizontal permeability coefficients, respectively. Experimental Study on Permeability Characteristics of Geotubes for Seepage Analysis on Safety Assessment of Dams

    Xiaolei Man1,*, Ganggang Sha2, Shuigen Hu1, Hui Bao1, Guangying Liu1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.14, No.4, pp. 339-353, 2020, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2020.013001

Abstract Geotubes are heterogeneous structures composed of filling sand and bag material, and its permeability characteristics are different from that of filling sand. The uncertainty of geotubes permeability characteristics results in the failure of seepage analysis of geotube dams, which restricts the safety assessment of the dams. As the basis of the study on the seepage mechanism of the geotubes, the influence of particle grading on permeability coefficient of filling sand and sand covered with geotextiles were explored by the permeability tests of filling sand with different particle grading under the condition of sand covered with… More >
