Abstract Determination of the somaclonal variation of in vitro-propagated plants is crucial to determine the appropriate micropropagation protocol and growth regulators for commercial scale multiplication. In this research, nine multiplication media (MM) augmented with different concentrations of 6-benzyl adenine (BA), Kinetin (Kin), and Thidiazuron (TDZ), Three rooting media (RM) supplemented with three levels of α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and three types of soil mixtures (v/v); Coco peat/Vermiculite/Sand (CVS), Peat moss/Perlite/Sand (PPS) and Peat moss/Perlite (PP) were used in the micropropagation protocol of daylily plants. MM2 showed the maximum shoot length and the number of leaves, while MM9… More >

Leaf epidermis in three Asteraceae native species of Argentina with ornamental potential

Gil SP, L Seisdedos, ME Reyna, MM Cerana

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.81, pp. 205-210, 2012, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2012.81.205

Abstract The goals of this study were (1) to make a careful study of the foliar epidermis of Grindelia cabrerae var. cabrerae, Solidago chilensis y Wedelia buphthalmiflora, native Asteraceae from Argentina which have ornamental potential, and (2) to determine variables that indicate adaptation to xeromorphic environments. Five adult leaves from five plants were selected from each population. All the material was fixed in FAA. The epidermis of both foliar sides were macerated in hypochlorite of sodium, and obtained by scraping. They were stained with safranine and mounted in water-glycerine (1:1). From each slide, five fields were chosen and… More >

Heavy metal accumulation in Pelargonium hortorum: Effects on growth and development

    Orroño DI, RS Lavado*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.78, pp. 75-82, 2009, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2009.78.075

Abstract Ornamental plants have been proposed for growing in heavy metal (HM) contaminated soils, and also for phytoremediation. We evaluated (1) biomass production and (2) HM accumulation in Pelargonium hortorum. Plants were grown for 16 weeks on HM (cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc) enriched soils. Treatments were i) control, non-enriched soil, ii) medium concentration treatment, and iii) high concentration treatment. Four destructive harvests were carried out, and roots, stems, leaves, and flowers were analyzed each time. Concentrations of HM were determined using ICP. Significant reductions in biomass production were observed in HM-enriched soils compared with More >

Reproduction of Pavonia cymbalaria (Malvaceae), a native species with ornamental potential

    Torres, YA1, MA Long2, SM Zalba1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.77, pp. 151-160, 2008, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2008.77.151

Abstract Pavonia cymbalaria A. St.-Hil. & Naudin (Malvaceae) is a native species of the southern mountains in the Province of Buenos Aires. Its morphological characteristics become it as a potential candidate for ornamental use. Crop requirements and seed germination were evaluated for this species in this study. Different treatments were applied to 640 mericarps: removal of carpel residues, mechanical scarification or exposition of mericarps and nude seeds to cold conditions. An untreated control was used for each of these treatments. Germination only occurred on nude seeds; this implies the existence of an extrinsic dormancy imposed by the… More >
