Yaren Aydın1, Gebrail Bekdaş1,*, Sinan Melih Nigdeli1, Zong Woo Geem2,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.141, No.3, pp. 2471-2499, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2024.056693 - 31 October 2024

Abstract Dynamic impacts such as wind and earthquakes cause loss of life and economic damage. To ensure safety against these effects, various measures have been taken from past to present and solutions have been developed using different technologies. Tall buildings are more susceptible to vibrations such as wind and earthquakes. Therefore, vibration control has become an important issue in civil engineering. This study optimizes tuned mass damper inerter (TMDI) using far-fault ground motion records. This study derives the optimum parameters of TMDI using the Adaptive Harmony Search algorithm. Optimum Design for the Magnification Mechanisms Employing Fuzzy Logic–ANFIS

    Ngoc Thai Huynh1, Tien V. T. Nguyen2, Quoc Manh Nguyen3,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.73, No.3, pp. 5961-5983, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.029484 - 28 July 2022

Abstract To achieve high work performance for compliant mechanisms of motion scope, continuous work condition, and high frequency, we propose a new hybrid algorithm that could be applied to multi-objective optimum design. In this investigation, we use the tools of finite element analysis (FEA) for a magnification mechanism to find out the effects of design variables on the magnification ratio of the mechanism and then select an optimal mechanism that could meet design requirements. A poly-algorithm including the Grey-Taguchi method, fuzzy logic system, and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) algorithm, was utilized mainly in this study.… More >

CO2 and Cost-Based Optimum Design of Sustainable Metakaolin-Modified Concrete

    Xiaoyong Wang*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.9, pp. 2431-2450, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.020829 - 30 May 2022

Abstract Metakaolin is a highly reactive pozzolanic material that is widely utilized for enhancing the performance of concrete. This study offers a framework for the mixture design of sustainable metakaolin-modified concrete with low CO2 emissions and low costs. Different design strengths after 28 days are first formulated, with values such as 30, 40, 50, and 60 MPa. A genetic algorithm is then used to determine the optimal mixtures. Minimized CO2 and cost are set as the aims of the genetic algorithm. The strength of the concrete, its workability (slump), and carbonation service life with climate change are set… More >

Optimization Design of RC Ribbed Floor System Using Eagle Strategy with Particle Swarm Optimization

    Jiejiang Zhu1, *, Bolun Zhou1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.62, No.1, pp. 365-383, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.06655

Abstract The eagle strategy algorithm is combined with particle swarm optimization in this paper. The new algorithm, denoted as the ES-PSO, is implemented by interfacing Etabs structural analysis codes. ES-PSO is used to optimize the RC ribbed floor system, including floor and underground garage roof. By considering the effects of reinforcement, the principle of virtual work is applied to calculate the deflections of components. Construction cost is taken as the objective function and the constraint conditions are required to satisfy. Accordingly, the optimal layout, the optimal sections of the beams and slabs and the corresponding reinforcements More >

A Practical Engineering Approach to the Design and Manufacturing of a mini kW BladeWind Turbine: Definition, optimization and CFD Analysis

    G. Frulla1, P. Gili1, M. Visone2, V. D’Oriano2,3, M. Lappa4

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 257-277, 2015, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2015.011.257

Abstract A practical engineering approach to the design of a 60 kW wind generator with improved performances is presented. The proposed approach relies on the use of a specific, "ad hoc'' developed software, OPTIWR (Optimization Software), expressly conceived to define an "optimum'' rotor configuration in the framework of the blade-element-momentum theory. Starting from an initial input geometric configuration (corresponding to an already existing 50 kW turbine) and for given values of the wind velocity Vwind and of the advance ratio X = Vwind/ΩR (where Ω is the blade rotational speed and R is the propeller radius), this software… More >

Optimum Design of Worm Gears with Multiple Computer Aided Techniques

    Daizhong Su1, Wenjie Peng2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.6, No.4, pp. 221-228, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.006.221

Abstract Finite element analysis (FEA) has proved to be a useful method to analyse the strength of worm gears; however, it is usually time consuming and difficult for parametric design, and, hence, it is difficult to apply FEA for design optimisation. To overcome this problem, artificial neural network and genetic algorithm are utilised in this research to optimise worm gear design based on FEA results. A new type of worm drive, an involute cylindrical worm matting with an involute helical gear, is taken as an vehicale to illustrate the approach developed. More >

Optimum Design of Adaptive Truss Structures Using the Integrated Force Method

    R. Sedaghati, A. Suleman1, S. Dost, B. Tabarrok2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.2, No.2, pp. 259-272, 2001, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2001.002.259

Abstract A structural analysis and optimization method is developed to find the optimal topology of adaptive determinate truss structures under various impact loading conditions. The objective function is based on the maximization of the structural strength subject to geometric constraints. The dynamic structural analysis is based on the integrated finite element force method and the optimization procedure is based on the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) method. The equilibrium matrix is generated automatically through the finite element analysis and the compatibility matrix is obtained directly using the displacement-deformation relations and the Single Value Decomposition (SVD) technique.
