Abstract One hundred twenty-five endophytic microorganisms were isolated from the roots, stems, and leaves of four prominent rice cultivars growing in temperate regions. Their potential to combat rice blast disease and promote plant growth was investigated. The dual culture tests highlighted the strong antagonistic activity of five fungal (ranging from 89%–70%) and five bacterial (72%–61%) endophytes. Subsequent examination focused on volatile compounds produced by selected isolates to counter the blast pathogen. Among these, the highest chitinase (13.76 µg mL−1) and siderophore (56.64%), was exhibited by Aspergillus flavus, and the highest HCN production was shown by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (36.15 µM mL−1). AFAF ALHARTHI*

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.8, pp. 1743-1755, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.027154

Abstract Natural biomaterials are now frequently used to build biocarrier systems, which can carry medications and biomolecules to a target region and achieve a desired therapeutic effect. Biomaterials and polymers are of great importance in the synthesis of nanomaterials. The recent studies have tended to use these materials because they are easily obtained from natural sources such as fungi, algae, bacteria, and medicinal plants. They are also biodegradable, compatible with neighborhoods, and non-toxic. Natural biomaterials and polymers are chemically changed when they are linked by cross linking agents with other polymers to create scaffolds, matrices, composites, and interpenetrating polymer networks employing… More >

Enhancing Hydrocarbon-Rich Bio-Oil Production via Catalytic Pyrolysis Fortified with Microorganism Pretreatment

    Jiapeng Wang1, Bo Zhang1,*, Haoqiang Cheng1, Zhixiang Xu2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.10, pp. 3595-3612, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.030005

Abstract A new method of pretreatment of corn straw with Phanerochaete chrysosporium combined with pyrolysis was proposed to improve the quality of bio-oil. The characterization results demonstrated that microbial pretreatment was an effective method to decrease the lignin, which can achieve a maximum removal rate of 44.19%. Due to the destruction of biomass structure, the content of alkali metal and alkaline earth metal is reduced. Meanwhile, the depolymerized biomass structure created better pyrolysis conditions to promote the pyrolysis efficiency, increase the average decomposition rate of pyrolysis and reduce the residue. In fast pyrolysis, because of the enrichment of cellulose and the… More > Graphic Abstract

    A.M. Rashada , A.J. Chamkhab , B. Mallikarjunac,*, M.M.M. Abdoua

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.10, pp. 1-8, 2018, DOI:10.5098/hmt.10.21

Abstract In this paper, the steady mixed bioconvection flow of a nanofluid containing gyrotactic microorganisms past a vertical slender cylinder is studied. The passively controlled nanofluid model is applied to approximate this nano-bioconvection flow problem, which is believed to be physically more realistic than previously commonly used actively controlled nanofluid models. Using a suitable transformation, the nonlinear system of partial differential equations is converted into non-similar equations. These resulting equations are solved numerically using an accurate implicit finitedifference method. The present numerical results are compared with available data and are found in an excellent agreement. The skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt… More >

Abstract Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) includes a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels and accounts for major morbidity and premature death worldwide. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease with the gradual destruction of supporting tissues around the teeth, including gingiva, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and cementum. Periodontitis has been found to potentially increase the risk of ASCVD. Generally, oral microorganisms and inflammation are the major factors for periodontitis to the incidence of ASCVD. Recently, evidence has shown that the loss of masticatory function is another important factor of periodontitis to the incidence of ASCVD. In this review, we… More > Graphic Abstract
