Xiaodong Shi*, Tingyu Wang, Sui Ai, Jiasi Li

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.10, pp. 2571-2581, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.056606 - 30 October 2024

Abstract Cotton rose (Hibiscus mutabilis) is a well-known ornamental plant that produces large flowers of vibrant colors. However, metabolites in H. mutabilis flowers with vibrant color have not been fully understood. By performing a combined analysis of metabolomics and transcriptomics data, we here explored mechanisms for the production of primary active compounds in this plant. Multivariate statistics unveiled differences in flavonoid metabolism between white and pink flowers, with pink flowers exhibiting a greater flavonoid abundance. The white-to-pink transition of cotton rose flowers may be attributed to pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside formation. On examining the expression of genes related to the structure More > Graphic Abstract

Integrated GC-MS and LC-MS-Based Untargeted Metabolomics Reveals Diverse Metabolites in Fermented Pine Needles

    Yinyu Xu1, Zheng Li1, Qian Wen2, Hao He1, Pengtu Shi1, Wenhua Zhou2,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.9, pp. 2367-2382, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.047949 - 30 September 2024

Abstract The diversity of metabolites produced in fermented pine needles at different stages of fermentation has rarely been investigated. In the present study, untargeted metabolomic analysis using GC-MS and LC-MS was performed to detect metabolites in fermented pine needles at different fermentation stages. A total of 30 samples of pine needles fermented first with yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and then with a mixed bacterial culture of Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 and Bifidobacterium Breve M16V, were used to detect differential metabolites at different stages of fermentation. Pearson’s correlation analysis was used to determine correlations between metabolites and key microbial communities. A… More >

    Fuxin Li1, Enyan Chen1, Xinxin Chen1, Jingyu Jia1, Hemin Wang1, Jie Zhang1, Jianrui Sun1, Xin Li1,2,3,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.8, pp. 2095-2113, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.054231 - 30 August 2024

Abstract Salt stress inhibits plant growth and affects the biosynthesis of its secondary metabolites. Flavonoids are natural compounds that possess many important biological activities, playing a significant role in the medicinal activity of Eucommia ulmoides (E. ulmoides). To investigate the mechanism by which salt stress affects the biosynthesis of flavonoids in E. ulmoides, a comprehensive analysis of metabolomics and transcriptomics was conducted. The results indicated that salt stress led to the wilting and darkening of E. ulmoides leaves, accompanied by a decrease in chlorophyll levels, and significantly induced malondialdehyde (MDA) and relative electrical conductivity. During salt stress, most metabolites in… More >

Abstract Cymbidium goeringii is an economically important ornamental plant, and flower color is one of the main features of C. goeringii that contributes to its high economic value. To clarify the molecular mechanisms underlying the role of anthocyanins in mediating differences in color among varieties, liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry was used to perform anthocyanin-targeted metabolomics of seven C. goeringii varieties, including ‘Jin Qian Yuan’ (JQY), ‘Jin Xiu Qian Yuan’ (JXQY), ‘Miao Jiang Su Die’ (MJSD), ‘Qian Ming Su’ (QMS), ‘Shi Chan’ (SC), and ‘Yang Ming Su’ (YMS), as well as the C. goeringii. We detected 64 anthocyanins, including cyanidins, delphinidins,… More >

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.5, pp. 885-900, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.050450 - 28 May 2024

Abstract Trypsin, a novel superoxide scavenger, significantly enhances the storage quality of Hylocereus undatus (H. undatus). To elucidate the preservation mechanism of trypsin on H. undatus, a widely targeted metabolomic analysis, and transcriptomics analysis were conducted. Firstly, a total of 453 metabolites were identified, with organic acids and their derivatives constituting the largest proportion (25%). Amino acids and their metabolites, prominent among organic acids, were further analyzed. Among them, 73 metabolites were associated with amino acids, and 37 exhibited significant differences. The most enriched Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway was arginine biosynthesis (map00220), with polyamine metabolites… More >

Drought-Mediated Modulation in Metabolomic Profiling of Leaf, Growth, Ecophysiology and Antioxidants

    Khalid Rehman Hakeem1,2,3,*, Hesham F. Alharby1, M. Irfan Qureshi4

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.12, pp. 3323-3344, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.030212 - 28 December 2023

    Abstract

Abiotic stresses, including drought, have been found to affect the growth and medicinal quality of numerous herbs. The proposed study aims to study the effects of different drought regimes on the metabolic profile, growth, ecophysiology, cellular antioxidants, and antioxidant potential of Nigella sativa (Black cumin) leaf. Forty-day-old seedlings of N. sativa were exposed to three regimes of drought (control, moderate and high) for a week. UPLC-MS/MS metabolic profile of the leaf reveals the presence of more than a hundred metabolites belonging to anthocyanins, chalcones, dihydro flavonoids, flavonoids, flavanols, flavones, flavonoid carbonoside, isoflavones, etc. Drought was found to

Abstract Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum) is an important pseudocereal feed crop with medicinal and nutritional value. Drought is one of the main causes of reduced growth and yield in these plants. We investigated the growth, physiological, and metabolic responses of the widely promoted Tartary buckwheat variety Chuan Qiao No. 1 to polyethylene glycol (PEG)-mediated drought stress. Drought significantly decreased shoot length, shoot biomass and relative water content. Root length, malondialdehyde content, electrolyte leakage, activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase and amylase, and contents of soluble sugar, soluble protein and proline were increased by PEG-mediated drought. Untargeted metabolomics… More >
