An Efficient Allocation for Lung Transplantation Using Ant Colony Optimization

    Lina M. K. Al-Ebbini*

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.35, No.2, pp. 1971-1985, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.030100 - 19 July 2022

Abstract A relationship between lung transplant success and many features of recipients’/donors has long been studied. However, modeling a robust model of a potential impact on organ transplant success has proved challenging. In this study, a hybrid feature selection model was developed based on ant colony optimization (ACO) and k-nearest neighbor (kNN) classifier to investigate the relationship between the most defining features of recipients/donors and lung transplant success using data from the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS). The proposed ACO-kNN approach explores the features space to identify the representative attributes and classify patients’ functional status (i.e.,… More >

Benefit of prophylactic bronchodilator with β2 adrenergic agonist in ischemia-reperfusion-induced lung injury

    CHEN-LIANG TSAI1, YU-HUEI LIN2, CHIH-YING CHANGCHIEN3, CHIH-FENG CHIAN1,#,*, CHI-HUEI CHIANG4,#,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.45, No.5, pp. 1201-1211, 2021, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.014279 - 12 July 2021

Abstract Primary lung graft dysfunction could significantly attribute to ischemia-reperfusion lung injury (IRLI) during transplantation surgery. β2-adrenergic agonists were one of the bronchodilators that had been well-established in the management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with anti-inflammatory potency. By applying the model of isolated rat lung, we evaluated the efficacy of short-acting β2-agonist inhalation to ameliorate ischemia-reperfusion damage. The experiment protocol was 180 min of global ischemia and then reperfusion for 60 min. In the β2-agonist inhalation group, aerosolized albuterol was administrated prior ischemia procedure. Increased weight ratios of wet to dry lung… More >

Normalization of Elevated Tumor Marker CA27-29 After Bilateral Lung Transplantation in a Patient With Breast Cancer and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Mehmet Sitki Copur*†, Julie Marie Wurdeman, Debra Nelson*, Ryan Ramaekers*, Dron Gauchan*, David Crockett*

    Oncology Research, Vol.26, No.3, pp. 515-518, 2018, DOI:10.3727/096504017X15128550060375

Abstract Solid tumors involving glandular organs express mucin glycoprotein that is eventually shed into the circulation. As a result, these proteins can easily be measured in the serum and be used as potential tumor markers. The most commonly used tumor markers for breast cancer are CA27-29 and CA15-3, which both measure the glycoprotein product of the mucin-1 (MUC1) gene. CA27-29 has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for monitoring disease activity in breast cancer patients. Most oncology clinical practice guidelines do not recommend the use of tumor markers for routine surveillance of early… More >
