Modeling of Leachate Propagation in a Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Foundation

    Nadezhda Zubova*, Andrey Ivantsov

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.6, pp. 1407-1424, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.051130

Abstract The study deals with the numerical modeling of leachate distribution in the porous medium located under a municipal solid waste disposal landfill (MSWLF). The considered three-layer system is based on geological data obtained from field measurements. For simplicity, the problem is investigated by assuming a two-component approach. Nevertheless, the heat produced by landfills due to biological and chemical processes and the thermal diffusion mechanism contributing to pollution transport are taken into account. The numerical modeling of the propagation of leachate in the considered layered porous medium is implemented for parameters corresponding to natural soil and More >

    Yufang Zhang1, Yingfa Lu2,*, Yao Zhong2, Jian Li1, Dongze Liu2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.134, No.1, pp. 357-381, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.020874

Abstract An analytical method for determining the stresses and deformations of landfills contained by retaining walls is proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, the sliding resisting normal and tangential stresses of the retaining wall and the stress field of the sliding body are obtained considering the differential stress equilibrium equations, boundary conditions, and macroscopic forces and moments applied to the system, assuming continuous stresses at the interface between the sliding body and the retaining wall. The solutions to determine stresses and deformations of landfills contained by retaining walls are obtained using the Duncan-Chang and More >

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 169-190, 2017, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2017.011.169

Abstract As the landfill leachate has strong pollution on the underground water, surface water and soil. This paper develops the formula of impervious slurry with low permeability, good durability, strong adsorption and retardant based on the bentonite which is modified by polyvinyl alcohol. Through the simulation experiment, the optimum formula of polyvinyl alcohol is 0.2%. Its osmotic coefficient for 28 days is 0.53×10-8~1.86×10-8 cm/s and compressive strength is 0.5~1.5 MPa as well. This paper study on the retardant rule of the consolidation of slurry against the pollution in the leachate by self-made percolation instrument. The experiment More >

A Fully Coupled Finite Element Model of Landfill Gas Migration in a Partially Saturated Soil

    W. J. Ferguson1, B. Palananthakumar2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.8, No.3, pp. 201-216, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2005.008.201

Abstract Environmental and safety issues associated with landfill gas require the control of off-site migration. Mathematical modelling can assist in the understanding of the processes and mechanisms controlling gas migration from municipal waste disposal sites. This paper presents the development and application of a mathematical model that simulates landfill gas migration within a partially saturated soil. This model accounts for two-phase flow and incorporates multi-component (methane, carbon dioxide, dry air and moisture) transport in the gas and liquid phases together with concomitant heat migration. The governing system of fully coupled non-linear partial differential equations of the… More >
