    Xiao Huang1,2, Jin Yang3,*

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.6, pp. 1393-1406, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.046360 - 27 June 2024

Abstract Cement-based materials are fundamental in the construction industry, and enhancing their properties is an ongoing challenge. The use of superabsorbent polymers (SAP) has gained significant attention as a possible way to improve the performance of cement-based materials due to their unique water-absorption and retention properties. This study investigates the multifaceted impact of kaolin intercalation-modified superabsorbent polymers (K-SAP) on the properties of cement mortar. The results show that K-SAP significantly affects the cement mortar’s rheological behavior, with distinct phases of water absorption and release, leading to changes in workability over time. Furthermore, K-SAP alters the hydration More >

An Effective Hybrid Model of ELM and Enhanced GWO for Estimating Compressive Strength of Metakaolin-Contained Cemented Materials

Abidhan Bardhan1,*, Raushan Kumar Singh2, Mohammed Alatiyyah3, Sulaiman Abdullah Alateyah4,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.2, pp. 1521-1555, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.044467 - 29 January 2024

Abstract This research proposes a highly effective soft computing paradigm for estimating the compressive strength (CS) of metakaolin-contained cemented materials. The proposed approach is a combination of an enhanced grey wolf optimizer (EGWO) and an extreme learning machine (ELM). EGWO is an augmented form of the classic grey wolf optimizer (GWO). Compared to standard GWO, EGWO has a better hunting mechanism and produces an optimal performance. The EGWO was used to optimize the ELM structure and a hybrid model, ELM-EGWO, was built. To train and validate the proposed ELM-EGWO model, a sum of 361 experimental results… More >

A Comparative Study of Different Drying Processes for a Deformable Saturated Porous Medium

    Nour El Houda Ben Mustaphaa1,3,*, Ibtissem Boumnijel1, M. El-Ganaoui2, Daoued Mihoubi1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.6, pp. 1339-1348, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.022888 - 30 January 2023

Abstract Drying of a deformable saturated porous medium based on convective tempering is a novel method that can enhance energy efficiency and the quality of the dried product itself. In this experimental investigation, the performances of this specific technique are compared with those of a standard stationary drying process in terms of deformation, drying kinetics, moisture redistribution, and energy consumption. In particular, the response of a deformable saturated porous medium (Kaolin) is considered. The results are critically discussed pointing out advantages and drawbacks. More > Graphic Abstract

Performance Improved of a Lime and Hemp-Based Concrete through the Addition of Metakaolin

Suzanne Daher*, Amar Benazzouk, Haïkel Ben Hamed, Thierry Langlet

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.5, pp. 1091-1113, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.020348 - 30 November 2022

Abstract This work describes in detail the experimental investigation of the physico-mechanical properties of nonstructural hemp concrete (usually used as insulating wall material) when the Air-lime based Tradial PF70 binder is partially replaced using Metakaolin. The objective is to reduce the amount of free Ca2+ ions in the binder as these are responsible for the degradation of vegetables particles and can therefore induce a loss of mechanical performances. In order to assess the effectiveness of pozzolanic reaction, amounts of 0%, 10%, and 20% vol. of Air-lime binder were replaced by the Metakaolin material, while testing the mechanical More >

CO2 and Cost-Based Optimum Design of Sustainable Metakaolin-Modified Concrete

    Xiaoyong Wang*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.9, pp. 2431-2450, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.020829 - 30 May 2022

Abstract Metakaolin is a highly reactive pozzolanic material that is widely utilized for enhancing the performance of concrete. This study offers a framework for the mixture design of sustainable metakaolin-modified concrete with low CO2 emissions and low costs. Different design strengths after 28 days are first formulated, with values such as 30, 40, 50, and 60 MPa. A genetic algorithm is then used to determine the optimal mixtures. Minimized CO2 and cost are set as the aims of the genetic algorithm. The strength of the concrete, its workability (slump), and carbonation service life with climate change are set… More >

Influences of Multi-Component Supplementary Cementitious Materials on the Performance of Metakaolin Based Geopolymer

    Wu Jing1,2,#, Ren Luo3,#, Sha Ding2, Ping Duan3,4,5,6,7,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.7, pp. 1813-1828, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.018771 - 07 March 2022

Abstract In this study, the workability and reaction mechanism of metakaolin (MK) based geopolymer blended with rice husk ash (RHA) and silica fume (SF) was investigated. The prepared samples were subjected to tests including compressive strength and fluidity tests. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM) were employed to explore the phase composition and microstructure of geopolymers. The molecular bonding information of geopolymer was provided by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Meanwhile, the porosity of geopolymer was obtained by Mercury intrusion porosimeter (MIP) analysis. The high-activity RHA obtained after calcination at 600°C was used as More > Graphic Abstract

Scavenging Effects of Kaolin on Fine Ash Formation during Zhundong Coal Combustion

    Fangqi Liu1, Xianpeng Zeng1,2, Yimin Xia1, Zihao Wang1, Dunxi Yu1,*

    Energy Engineering, Vol.118, No.3, pp. 459-471, 2021, DOI:10.32604/EE.2021.014240 - 22 March 2021

Abstract The previous work found that the additive kaolin could scavenge not only sodium (Na) but also calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg), which is the important ash fluxing agents in low rank coal combustion. Such scavenging effects of kaolin on fine ash formation were studied in the present work. A typical Zhundong coal and its blends with kaolin at dosages of 1, 2 and 4 wt% were combusted in an electrically heated drop tube furnace (DTF) at 1300°C. The fine ashes generated were collected and size segregated by a low pressure impactor (LPI). The morphology and… More >

Arun Kumar Pradhan1,2*, Prafulla Kumar Sahoo1, Pradeep Kumar Rana2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.5, No.5, pp. 371-379, 2017, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2017.634129

Abstract Chitosan grafted with poly(methyl-methacrylate) (PMMA) and adsorbed with kaolin functionalized as bioadhesive was prepared via emulsion polymerization technique and physiochemically characterized as a bone-graft substitute. The so prepared grafted bioactive bone cement (BBC) bionanocomposites (BNCs), chitosan-g-PMMA/kaolin, was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The water uptake, retention ability and the nanosize particle arrangement in the polymeric BBC-BNCs were studied along with the mechanical and biodegradation properties. These preliminary investigations of the BNCs will open the door for their use in bioadhesive More >
