Reduction Discoloration of Reactive Dyed Cotton Waste and Chemical Recycling via Ionic Liquid

Aline Ferreira Knihs, Larissa Klen Aragão, Miguel Angelo Granato, Andrea Cristiane Krause Bierhalz*, Rita de Cassia Siqueira Curto Valle

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.12, No.9, pp. 1557-1571, 2024, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2024.052963 - 25 September 2024

Abstract The textile industry generates large volumes of waste throughout its production process. Most of this waste is colored, therefore, discoloration is an important step toward recycling and reusing this waste. This study focused on the chemical reductive discoloration of textile waste composed of cotton dyed with reactive dye. The experimental design demonstrated the significant influence of the concentration of reducing agent and time of reaction on the degree of whiteness of the cotton fibers. The concentration of the alkaline agent was not significant in the process. The optimization of the reaction conditions lead to Berger… More > Graphic Abstract

Probing Electrified Ionic Liquid-Solid Interface Using Long-Needle AFM

    Pengcheng Nie1,2, Xikai Jiang1, Xu Zheng1, Dongshi Guan1,2,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.25, No.1, pp. 1-2, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09838

Abstract “How can we measure interface phenomena on the microscopic level” is a fundamental question that has been with us for many years and is also listed in recent Science 125 question. It is even harder to explore the electrified interface. In this work, we report atomic-force-microscope measurements of interfacial dynamics of an electrified room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL)-solid interface. RTILs are intriguing fluids that have drawn much attention in applications ranging from tribology and catalysis to energy storage. With strong electrostatic interaction between ions, their interfacial behaviors can be modulated by controlling energetics of the electrified… More >

Synthesis of Lignin-Based Polyacid in an Acidic Ionic Liquid: A Green Method to Improve the Performance of Lignin as Catalyst in Urea-Formaldehyde Resin

    Hamed Younesi-Kordkheili1,*, Antonio Pizzi2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.2, pp. 237-246, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.017851 - 30 August 2021

Abstract The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of ionic liquid treated lignin-based polyacid as a catalyst for urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins. Esterification of lignin was carried out, without any catalyst, with anhydride maleic and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate [Bmim][HSO4] as acidic ionic liquid to form maleated lignin-based polyacids (MA-IL). The performance of MA-IL as UF resin catalyst was respectively compared to hyroxymethylated lignin-based polyacid (MA-HL) and to NH4Cl. The FTIR analysis indicated that the proportion of -COOH and C-O bonds increased due to the esterification of lignin with ionic liquid rather than its hyroxymethylation. Physicochemical… More >

CFD Analysis of the Influence of Ionic Liquids on the Performances of a Refrigeration System

    Jianghao Niu*

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.17, No.6, pp. 1003-1013, 2021, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2021.015225 - 08 September 2021

Abstract The falling film of an ionic liquid ([EMIM] [DMP] + H2O) and its effect on a refrigeration system are numerically simulated in the framework of a Volume of Fluid (VOF) method (as available in the ANSYS Fluent computational platform). The properties of the liquid film and the wall shear stress (WSS) are compared with those obtained for a potassium bromide solution. Different working conditions are considered. It is noted that the ionic liquid demonstrates a better absorption capability, with a coefficient of performance (COP) of 0.55. It is proved that the [EMIM] [DMP] + H2O ionic More >

A Double-Phase High-Frequency Traveling Magnetic Field Developed for Contactless Stirring of Low-Conducting Liquid Materials

    Xiaodong Wang1,2,*, Ernst Roland3, Fautrelle Yves3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.127, No.2, pp. 469-486, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2021.013597 - 19 April 2021

Abstract The use of low electrically conducting liquids is more and more widespread. This is the case for molten glass, salt or slag processing, ionic liquids used in biotechnology, batteries in energy storage and metallurgy. The present paper deals with the design of a new electromagnetic induction device that can heat and stir low electrically-conducting liquids. It consists of a resistance-capacity-inductance circuit coupled with a low-conducting liquid load. The device is supplied by a unique electric power source delivering a single-phase high frequency electric current. The main working principle of the circuit is based on a… More >

Rapid Microwave-Assisted Ionothermal Dissolution of Cellulose and Its Regeneration Properties

    Xu Wang1,3, Jianhong Zhou1,2, Bo Pang1,2, Dawei Zhao1,2,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.12, pp. 1363-1380, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.08218

Abstract Introduction of the strategy of anhydrous calcium carbonate protection incorporated with the drop by drop reaction, high-purity 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim] Cl) was prepared at reaction temperature of 80°C for only 10 h. Cellulose samples from different biomass sources (with different degree of polymerization characteristic) could be rapidly (no more than 10 minutes) and completely dissolved in the [Bmim] Cl using a microwave-assisted ionothermal route. Homogeneous cellulosic regenerates with high degree of polymerization and thermal stability characteristics were obtained through a coagulation process in water. Furthermore, the dissolved celluloses were readily regenerated into solid products such More >

Sustainable Materials Based on Cellulose from Food Sector Agro-Wastes

    T. Côto1, I. Moura1, A. de Sá1,*, C. Vilarinho2, A. V. Machado1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.6, No.7, pp. 688-696, 2018, DOI:10.32604/JRM.2018.00006

Abstract Biopolymers exhibit unique properties and can be produced from plants’ and crops’ wastes. Cellulose has been used for the production of sustainable materials, nevertheless due to the difficulty inherent to its extraction, several methods have been studied in order to optimize the process. Therefore, this paper reports the extraction of natural polymers from food sector agro-food wastes, including cellulose, following a green chemistry aproach. The cellulose extracted from pumpkin peel was acetylated and dispersed in a polylactic acid (PLA) matrix. The developed materials were characterized in terms of their structure, morphology and thermal stability. The More >
