Effect of PEG Incorporation on Physicochemical and in vitro Degradation of PLLA/PDLLA Blends: Application in Biodegradable Implants

    Mochamad Chalid1,*, Gifrandy Gustiraharjo1, Azizah Intan Pangesty1, Alyssa Adyandra1, Yudan Whulanza2, Sugeng Supriadi2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.7, pp. 3043-3056, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.026788 - 05 June 2023

Abstract Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was added at different concentrations to the blend of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(D,L-lactic acid)(PDLLA) to tailor the properties. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement showed that all blends were miscible due to shifting a single glass transition temperature into a lower temperature for increasing PEG content. The DSC, FTIR, and XRD results implied the crystallinity enhancement for PEG content until 8 wt%, then decreased at 12 wt% PEG. The XRD result indicated the homo crystalline phase formation in all blends and no stereocomplex crystal. The in vitro degradation study indicated that… More > Graphic Abstract

Evaluation of Novel Chitosan Based Composites Coating on Wettability for Pure Titanium Implants

    Qahtan A. Hamad1, Hanaa A. Al-Kaisy1, Mohanad N. Al-Shroofy1, Noor K. Faheed2,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 1601-1612, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.023213 - 01 December 2022

Abstract This work aims to prepare chitosan (CS)-based coated layers, CS (10 wt% nanosilver/90 wt% CS, 10 wt% biotin/90 wt% CS, and 5 wt% nanosilver–5 wt% biotin)/90 wt% CS coatings are prepared, onto pure Ti substrate. The surface morphology of the novel CS composite coating was studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) and wettability test. Results show that the addition of (biotin, nanosilver) 5 Vol.% improves the properties of composite materials. Using different particles’ scale size aid in improving the combinations in the alginate, producing a dual… More > Graphic Abstract

A Custom Manipulator for Dental Implantation Through Model-Based Design

    Anitha Govindhan1,*, Karnam Anantha Sunitha2, Sivanathan Kandhasamy3

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.35, No.1, pp. 351-365, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.026361 - 06 June 2022

Abstract This paper presents a Model-Based Design (MBD) approach for the design and control of a customized manipulator intended for drilling and positioning of dental implants accurately with minimal human intervention. While performing an intra-oral surgery for a prolonged duration within a limited oral cavity, the tremor of dentist's hand is inevitable. As a result, wielding the drilling tool and inserting the dental implants safely in accurate position and orientation is highly challenging even for experienced dentists. Therefore, we introduce a customized manipulator that is designed ergonomically by taking in to account the dental chair specifications… More >

PNN-SVM Approach of Ti-Based Powder’s Properties Evaluation for Biomedical Implants Production

    Ivan Izonin1,*, Roman Tkachenko1, Michal Gregus2, Zoia Duriagina1,3, Nataliya Shakhovska1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.71, No.3, pp. 5933-5947, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.022582 - 14 January 2022

Abstract The advent of additive technologies has provided a significant breakthrough in the production of medical implants. It has reduced costs, increased productivity and accuracy of the implant manufacturing process. However, there are problems associated with assessing defects in the microstructure, mechanical and technological properties of alloys, both during their production by powder metallurgy and in the process of 3D printing. Thus traditional research methods of alloys properties demand considerable human, material, and time resources. At the same time, artificial intelligence tools create opportunities for intelligent evaluation of the conformity for the microstructure, phase composition, and… More >

Process Modelling and Experimental Analysis of Optimal Specimen Selection in Organic CMCs

    P. V. Rajesh1, Kanak Kalita2,*, Xiao-Zhi Gao3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.70, No.2, pp. 2415-2433, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.018247 - 27 September 2021

Abstract Bone grafting is a surgical restructuring procedure of replacing broken bones and reconstructing missing bone pieces so that complex bone fractures can be repaired to avoid any serious health risk as well as permanent bone disfiguration. Normally, human bones tend to regenerate and heal completely from fracture. But it needs a small scaffold to provide the necessary space to grow. Bone implants allow a broken bone to grow seamlessly. Traditionally, non-corrosive metal alloys are used for fixing broken bones. A metal plate is fastened between two ends of broken bones to join them. However, issues… More >

Influence of Geometric Design Variable and Bone Quality on Stress Distribution for Zirconia Dental Implants-A 3D Finite Element Analysis

    Duraisamy Velmurugan1, Masilamany Santha Alphin1,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.117, No.2, pp. 125-141, 2018, DOI:10.31614/cmes.2018.01817

Abstract This study aims to investigate the effects of variable thread pitch on stress distribution in bones of different bone qualities under two different loading conditions (Vertical, and Horizontal) for a Zirconia dental implant. For this purpose, a three dimensional finite element model of the mandibular premolar section and three single threaded implants of 0.8 mm, 1.6 mm, 2.4 mm pitch was designed. Finite element analysis software was used to develop the model and three different bone qualities (Type II, Type III, and Type IV) were prepared. A vertical load of 200 N, and a horizontal… More >

Chitosan-g-PMMA/Kaolin Bionanocomposites for Use in Bioadhesive Bone-Cement Implants

Arun Kumar Pradhan1,2*, Prafulla Kumar Sahoo1, Pradeep Kumar Rana2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.5, No.5, pp. 371-379, 2017, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2017.634129

Abstract Chitosan grafted with poly(methyl-methacrylate) (PMMA) and adsorbed with kaolin functionalized as bioadhesive was prepared via emulsion polymerization technique and physiochemically characterized as a bone-graft substitute. The so prepared grafted bioactive bone cement (BBC) bionanocomposites (BNCs), chitosan-g-PMMA/kaolin, was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The water uptake, retention ability and the nanosize particle arrangement in the polymeric BBC-BNCs were studied along with the mechanical and biodegradation properties. These preliminary investigations of the BNCs will open the door for their use in bioadhesive More >
