Abstract The hepatotoxic effect of potassium bromide (KBr) on rat liver tissues were determined, as well as the potential protective effect of Tegillaraca granosa (T. granosa) flesh body extract. Twenty adult male albino rats were equally distributed into four groups; Group (I) treated with physiological saline (control group), Group (II) was orally gavaged by 200 mg/kg of T. granosa body extract day after day, Group (III) was intoxicated by KBr (150 mg/kg bwt day after day orally) and finally, Group (IV) was given a combination of T. granosa flesh body extract plus KBr with similar doses in the second and… More >

Therapeutic Applications of Naringenin, a Flavanone Enriched in Citrus Fruits, for Disorders beyond Diabetes

    Jaswinder Kaur1, Manish Vyas2, Joginder Singh1, Ram Prasad3,*, Jeena Gupta1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.89, No.4, pp. 795-803, 2020, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2020.09420 - 09 November 2020

Abstract In recent years, there has been an increase in epidemiological studies to highlight the health benefits of plant secondary metabolites. Flavonoids (polyphenolic plant secondary metabolites) are recently emerging as an important source for the discovery of new drugs increasing their pharmaceuticals, nutraceutical and medicinal applications. Naringenin is a flavanone, enriched in citrus fruits, tomatoes, bergamot, etc. which has been evaluated extensively for managing diabetes. However, in addition to this, naringenin had been ascribed to various important biological activities like antioxidant, antiviral, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiestrogenic, etc. This article aims at highlighting the therapeutic value of naringenin More >

Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects of silymarin on hepatic dysfunction induced by sodium nitrite

    Imam O. Sherif1, Mohammed M. H. Al-Gayyar1,2

    European Cytokine Network, Vol.24, No.3, pp. 114-121, 2013, DOI:10.1684/ecn.2013.0341

Abstract Purpose: Sodium nitrite, a food additive that is used as a color fixative and preservative for meats and fish, has been reported to have adverse health effects due to increased oxidative stress that could be harmful to different organs including the liver. Meanwhile, silymarin protects against hepatotoxicity caused by a variety of agents, on account of its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. We therefore examined the impact of dietary silymarin on sodium nitrite-induced liver damage in rats. Methods: Fifty adult male Sprague-Dawley rats received 80 mg/kg sodium nitrite in the presence or absence of silymarin (10… More >
