Determining the Energy Potential of Deep Borehole Heat Exchangers in Croatia and Economic Analysis of Oil & Gas Well Revitalization

Marija Macenić, Tomislav Kurevija*, Tin Herbst

    Energy Engineering, Vol.123, No.1, 2026, DOI:10.32604/ee.2025.067067 - 27 December 2025

Abstract The increased interest in geothermal energy is evident, along with the exploitation of traditional hydrothermal systems, in the growing research and projects developing around the reuse of already-drilled oil, gas, and exploration wells. The Republic of Croatia has around 4000 wells, however, due to a long period since most of these wells were drilled and completed, there is uncertainty about how many are available for retrofitting as deep-borehole heat exchangers. Nevertheless, as hydrocarbon production decreases, it is expected that the number of wells available for the revitalization and exploitation of geothermal energy will increase. The… More >

    Energy Engineering, Vol.122, No.12, pp. 4857-4872, 2025, DOI:10.32604/ee.2025.069847 - 27 November 2025

Abstract Plate heat exchangers suffer from significant energy losses, which adversely affect the overall efficiency of thermal systems. To address this challenge, various heat transfer enhancement techniques have been investigated. Notably, the incorporation of surface corrugations is widely recognized as both effective and practical. Chevron corrugation is the most employed design. However, there remains a need to investigate alternative geometries that may offer superior performance. This study aims to find a novel corrugation design by conducting a comparative CFD analysis of flat, square, chevron, and cylindrical corrugated surfaces, assessing their impact on heat transfer enhancement within… More > Graphic Abstract

    Chen Zhu1, Xiao Ma1, Lumin Chen2, Qi Ma1, Yi Sun1, Fuping Qian1,*

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.21, No.8, pp. 1895-1915, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2025.067899 - 12 September 2025

Abstract The rotary gas-gas heat exchanger (GGH) is a vital component in waste heat recovery systems, particularly for Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) processes employed in cement kiln operations. This study investigates the thermal performance of a rotary GGH in medium- and low-temperature denitrification systems, using a simplified porous medium model based on its actual internal structure. A porous medium representation is developed from the structural characteristics of the most efficient heat transfer element, and a local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) model is employed to capture the distinct thermal behaviors of the solid matrix and gas phase. Heat Transfer Characterization of TPMS Heat Exchangers Applied to the Aerospace Field

    Nan Li1,2, Miao Wang1, Jingwen Zhao1, Kechun Sun1, Cheng Bi3, Mu Du4,*, Ersheng You5, Mingyang Yang6,*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.23, No.2, pp. 601-614, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2025.061192 - 25 April 2025

Abstract In exploring hypersonic propulsion, precooler combined engines require the development of lightweight, efficient, and compact heat exchangers (HX). As additive manufacturing technology continues to progress, triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structures, characterized by exceptionally high surface area to volume ratios and intricate geometric structures, have demonstrated superior heat transfer performance. This research examines the thermal-hydraulic (TH) behavior of FKS and Diamond as heat transfer structures under different Reynolds numbers through numerical simulations. The Nusselt number for FKS is 13.2%–17.6% higher than Diamond, while the friction factor for FKS is approximately 18.8%–29.3% higher. A detailed analysis More >

Air-Side Heat Transfer Performance Prediction for Microchannel Heat Exchangers Using Data-Driven Models with Dimensionless Numbers

    Long Huang1,2,3,*, Junjia Zou3, Baoqing Liu1, Zhijiang Jin1,2, Jinyuan Qian1

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.22, No.6, pp. 1613-1643, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2024.058231 - 19 December 2024

Abstract This study explores the effectiveness of machine learning models in predicting the air-side performance of microchannel heat exchangers. The data were generated by experimentally validated Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of air-to-water microchannel heat exchangers. A distinctive aspect of this research is the comparative analysis of four diverse machine learning algorithms: Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). These models are adeptly applied to predict air-side heat transfer performance with high precision, with ANN and GPR exhibiting notably superior accuracy. Additionally, this research further delves into… More >

Numerical Simulation of Liquified Natural Gas Boiling Heat Transfer Characteristics in Helically Coiled Tube-in-Tube Heat Exchangers

Fayi Yan*, He Lu, Shijie Feng

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.22, No.5, pp. 1493-1514, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2024.055324 - 30 October 2024

Abstract Helically coiled tube-in-tube (HCTT) heat exchangers are widely applied to the process technology because of their compactness and higher heat transfer efficiency. HCTT heat exchangers play an important role in liquified natural gas (LNG) use and cold energy recovery. The heat transfer characteristics, pressure distribution, and degree of vaporization of LNG in HCTT heat exchangers are numerically investigated. By comparing the simulation results of the computational model with existing experimental results, the effectiveness of the computational model is verified. The numerical simulation results show the vapor volume fraction of the HCTT heat exchanger is related… More >

Numerical Studies on Thermal and Hydrodynamic Characteristics of LNG in Helically Coiled Tube-in-Tube Heat Exchangers

Fayi Yan*, Xuejian Pei, He Lu, Shuzhen Zong

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.22, No.1, pp. 287-304, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2023.045038 - 21 March 2024

Abstract As compact and efficient heat exchange equipment, helically coiled tube-in-tube heat exchangers (HCTT heat exchangers) are widely used in many industrial processes. However, the thermal-hydraulic research of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the working fluid in HCTT heat exchangers is rarely reported. In this paper, the characteristics of HCTT heat exchangers, in which LNG flows in the inner tube and ethylene glycol-water solution flows in the outer tube, are studied by numerical simulations. The influences of heat transfer characteristics and pressure drops of the HCTT heat transfers are studied by changing the initial flow velocity,… More >

Simulation and Optimization of the Fluid Solidification Process in Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers

    Weiting Jiang1,*, Lei Zhao1,*, Chongyang Wang2, Tingni He1, Weiguo Pan1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.10, pp. 2597-2611, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.027504 - 25 June 2023

Abstract When a brazed plate heat exchanger is used as an evaporator, the working mass in the channel may undergo solidification, thereby hindering the refrigeration cycle. In this study the liquid solidification process and its optimization in a brazed plate heat exchanger are investigated numerically for different inlet velocities; moreover, different levels of corrugation are considered. The results indicate that solidification first occurs around the contacts, followed by the area behind the contacts. It is also shown that dead flow zones exist in the sharp areas and such areas are prone to liquid solidification. After optimization, More >
