    Qurat-Ul-Ain Raza1,2, Abdur Rehim1,*, Muhammad Amjad Bashir1,3,*, Mingzheng Duan4, Yucong Geng3, Abdulwahed Fahad Alrefaei5

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.12, pp. 3531-3548, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.057356 - 31 December 2024

Abstract Chemical fertilizers have contributed to improving crop production and coping with food safety challenges, but their excessive application in agriculture has resulted in soil and environmental problems. The present study was performed to assess the potential of biostimulants as an alternative to chemical fertilizers. A pot experiment was conducted to examine the response of okra against different biostimulants, including glycine (G.L.), lysine (L.Y.), aspartic acid (A.A.), vitamin B complex (V.B.), and chemical fertilizers (control; C.K.). The results revealed that G.L. and V.B. significantly improved chlorophyll a (12.51%) and chlorophyll b (7.14%) contents in okra… More >

    Sheeba Naaz1,2, Nadeem Ahmad2, Asma A. Al-Huqail3, Mohammad Irfan4, Faheema Khan3, Mohammad Irfan Qureshi1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.6, pp. 1725-1742, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.026100 - 11 April 2023

Abstract Cadmium (Cd) and Mercury (Hg) is among the heavy metals most hazardous for plant and human health. Known to induce oxidative stress in plants and disbalance equilibrium in the antioxidant defence system, these metals alter plant growth and cause damage at the cellular and molecular levels. Soybean is an important oilseed crop that is raised in soils often contaminated by Cd and Hg. The comparative studies on the deleterious effect of Cd and Hg and the defence system of antioxidants were not studied earlier in soybean plant. In this study, soybean plants were exposed to… More >

Abstract High yield, high quality, stable yield, adaptability to growth period, and modern mechanization are the basic requirements for crops in the 21st century. Soybean oleic acid is a natural unsaturated fatty acid with strong antioxidant properties and stability. Known as a safe fatty acid, it has the ability to successfully prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders. Improving the fatty acid composition of soybean seeds, can not only speed up the breeding process of high-quality high-oil and high-oleic soybeans, but also have important significance in human health, and provide the possibility for the development of soybean oil… More >

Exogenous Glycine Betaine Reduces Drought Damage by Mediating Osmotic Adjustment and Enhancing Antioxidant Defense in Phoebe hunanensis

    Yujie Yang1, Chengshi Huang2, Zuguo Ge3, Bengeng Zhou4, Guangju Su4, Chunling Liu4, Yongjun Fei1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.1, pp. 129-148, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.016704 - 16 August 2021

Abstract Drought stress negatively impacts growth and physiological processes in plants. The foliar application of glycine betaine (GB) is an effective and low-cost approach to improve the drought tolerance of trees. This study examined the effect of exogenously applied GB on the cell membrane permeability, osmotic adjustment, and antioxidant enzyme activities of Phoebe hunanensis Hand.-Mazz under drought stress. Two levels (0 and 800 mL) of water irrigation were tested under different applied GB concentrations (0, 50, 100, and 200 mM). Drought stress decreased the relative water content by 58.5% while increased the electric conductivity, malondialdehyde, proline, soluble proteins,… More >

Control of seed born mycobiota associated with Glycine max L. Merr. seeds by a combination of traditional medicinal plants extracts

    SULAIMAN A. AL YOUSEF*

    BIOCELL, Vol.45, No.5, pp. 1403-1411, 2021, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.015450 - 12 July 2021

Abstract Seeds from soybean collected from different commercial markets were surveyed for seed-borne fungi. Ninetyeight fungal colonies were isolated all over three monthly isolations constituting twenty-two fungal species. The isolated fungi were belonging to the genera: Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cephalosporium, Chaetomium, Cladosporium, Colletotrichum, Curvularia, Fusarium, Macrophomina, Mucor, Penicillium, Rhizoctonia, Rhizopus, Sclerotium, Stemphylium, and Verticillium. Assay of the antifungal activity of four ethanolic extracts of clove, cinnamon, garlic, and mint was carried out against the most common fungal species (Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, Fusarium solani, F. oxysporium, and F. moniliforme), which significantly reduced the growth of tested fungi. Clove extract recorded the highest antimicrobial potentiality against the seed-borne fungal species, followed by… More >

Abstract The fatty acid dehydrogenase gene plays an important role in regulating the oleic acid content in soybean. Genome-wide association study screened out soybean oleic acid related gene Gm15G117700. A fragment size of 693bp was obtained by PCR amplification of the gene and, it was connected by seamless cloning technology to the pMD18T cloning vector. Based on the gene sequence cloned, bioinformatic analysis of gene protein was performed. The overexpression vector of Gm15G117700 and the CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing vector were constructed. The positive plants were obtained by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of soybean cotyledon nodes and T2 plants were… More >

    Mirza Hasanuzzaman1,*, Aditya Banerjee2, M. H. M. Borhannuddin Bhuyan3,4, Aryadeep Roychoudhury2,*, Jubayer Al Mahmud5 and Masayuki Fujita3

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.88, No.3, pp. 185-221, 2019, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2019.07559

Abstract In the era of climate change, abiotic stresses (e.g., salinity, drought, extreme temperature, flooding, metal/metalloid(s), UV radiation, ozone, etc.) are considered as one of the most complex environmental constraints that restricts crop production worldwide. Introduction of stress-tolerant crop cultivars is the most auspicious way of surviving this constraint, and to produce these types of tolerant crops. Several bioengineering mechanisms involved in stress signaling are being adopted in this regard. One example of this kind of manipulation is the osmotic adjustment. The quarternary ammonium compound glycinebetaine (GB), also originally referred to as betaine is a methylated… More >

The Stability of Anionic States of Thymine-Glycine Dimers with Excess Electron

    Yugai Huang 1, 2, *

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.57, No.3, pp. 485-494, 2018, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2018.03112

Abstract It has been demonstrated that low energy electrons (LEEs) can induce serious DNA damages including bases loss and even single and double strand breaks. Experiments also showed that LEE induced DNA damages will be reduced with the presence of amino acids. For understanding of the protection of amino acids to DNA, the stability of 6 kinds of thymine and glycine (T-g) dimers with planar configurations with an excess electron were studied with density functional theory (DFT) method. The results show that, when the excess electron is vertically attached, all the dimers become more active with More >
