Computational and bioinformatics tools for understanding disease mechanisms

    MOHD ATHAR1,*, ANU MANHAS2, NISARG RANA2, AHMAD IRFAN3

    BIOCELL, Vol.48, No.6, pp. 935-944, 2024, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2024.049891 - 10 June 2024

Abstract Computational methods have significantly transformed biomedical research, offering a comprehensive exploration of disease mechanisms and molecular protein functions. This article reviews a spectrum of computational tools and network analysis databases that play a crucial role in identifying potential interactions and signaling networks contributing to the onset of disease states. The utilization of protein/gene interaction and genetic variation databases, coupled with pathway analysis can facilitate the identification of potential drug targets. By bridging the gap between molecular-level information and disease understanding, this review contributes insights into the impactful utilization of computational methods, paving the way for More >

In vitro Mutagenesis for the Improvement of Agave Genus

Sugey Vásquez-Hernández, Joaquín Adolfo Montes-Molina*, Federico Antonio Gutiérrez-Miceli, Sheila Jazmín Reyes-Zambrano, Carlos Alberto Lecona-Guzmán*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.7, pp. 2065-2078, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.028784 - 29 May 2023

Abstract Biotechnological techniques provide a viable alternative to help improve and increase the production of plant species of agricultural and economic importance, which have been affected over the years by climate change, increasing their susceptibility to pests and/or diseases, generating losses in production as well as a decrease in their regenerative and genetic diversity. The application of biotechnological techniques such as in vitro mutagenesis offers a viable option for the generation of crops that are resistant to the different factors caused by abiotic and biotic stress. In vitro mutagenesis has been used in an efficient way to generate… More >

Breeding Enrichment of Genetic Variation of Grain Yield and Its Attributes in Bread Wheat under Drought Stress and Well Irrigation

    Dina Swelam1, Abdel Hamid Salem2, Manal Hassan1, Mohammed Ali2,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.12, pp. 2699-2717, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.022651 - 29 August 2022

Abstract Drought stress (DS) is one of the most critical environmental abiotic stresses for wheat production in the arid environments. Selection of high-yielding genotypes tolerant to DS can play a significant role in mitigation the negative impacts associated with DS. In the present study, generation means analysis (GMA) was used to study the performance of two crosses under well irrigation (WI) and deficit irrigation [cross I (Line 44 × Shandweel-1) and cross II (Line 20 × Sakha 93)]. Significant differences were observed for days to heading (DH), days to maturity (DM), plant height (PH), spike length (SL), number of spikes… More >

Selection and Analysis of Polymorphisms in Somaclonal Variants of Agave americana Resistant to Fusarium oxysporum via an Ethyl Methanesulphonate Treatment

Sheila Jazmín Reyes-Zambrano1,*, Carlos Alberto Lecona-Guzmán1, Federico Antonio Gutiérrez-Miceli1, Víctor Manuel Ruiz-Valdiviezo1, Arely Anayansi Vargas-Díaz2

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.90, No.6, pp. 1727-1739, 2021, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2021.016171 - 28 June 2021

Abstract Agave americana L. callus were exposed to different concentrations of ethyl methanesulphonate (EMS) 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 mM and to different times of exposure (2 and 4 h). The viability and capacity of shoot formation were shown to be affected when the callus were exposed to high concentrations (30–60 mM). Only the callus exposed to 15 mM EMS presented shoot formation; the exposure time of two hours produced the largest quantity of shoots regenerated per callus (21 shoots/callus). In order to generate somaclonal variants resistant to Fusarium oxysporum, a selection pressure was applied through of… More >

Genetic Variation in Growth and Cone Traits of Pinus Koraiensis Half-Sib Families in Northeast China

    David Kombi Kaviriri1,3,4,#, Xiaoting Liu1,#, Zuoyi Fan2,#, Jingyuan Wang2, Qi Wang2, Lianfu Wang2, Lixing Wang2, Damase Khasa5, Xiyang Zhao1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.89, No.1, pp. 57-69, 2020, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2020.08409 - 01 March 2020

Abstract Genetic parameters were evaluated for growth and cone characteristics (tree height, diameter at breast height, volume, cone number, thousand seeds weight and single cone seeds weight) on 86 half-sib families of Pinus koraiensis aged 31 years. Analyses of variance revealed significant differences (p < 0.001) in all growth and cone traits among families while no significant differences were detected among blocks and the interaction between blocks and families. The average family values for growth traits were 17.22 m, 8.67 cm and 0.43 m3 for tree height, diameter at breast height and volume, respectively. The average cone… More >

Bifid T waves on the ECG and genetic variation in calcium channel voltage‐dependent beta 2 subunit gene (CACNB2) in acute Kawasaki disease

    Jun Oyamada1, Chisato Shimizu1, Jihoon Kim2, Matthew R. Williams1,3, Eileen Png4, Martin L. Hibberd4, Adriana H. Tremoulet1,3, James C. Perry1,3, Jane C. Burns1,3

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.14, No.2, pp. 213-220, 2019, DOI:10.1111/chd.12696

Abstract Background: We previously described the association of genetic variants in calcium channel genes and susceptibility to Kawasaki disease (KD), an acute, self‐limited vas‐ culitis, and the most common cause of acquired cardiac disease in children. Abnormal repolarization of cardiomyocytes and changes in T wave morphology have been re‐ ported in KD but have not been studied systematically.
Methods: We analyzed acute and convalescent ECG T wave morphology in two inde‐ pendent cohorts of KD subjects and studied the association between bifid T waves and genetic variants in previously reported genes with SNVs associated with cardiac repolarization.
    Results: Bifid… More >

    López-España RG1, S Hernández-Verdugo1, S Parra-Terraza1, F Porras1, Antonio Pacheco-Olvera1, A Valdez-Ortiz2, T Osuna-Enciso3, MD Muy-Rangel3

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.85, pp. 131-141, 2016, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2016.85.131

Abstract Wild pepper (Capsicum annuum L. var. glabriusculum) is a valuable genetic resource for food and agriculture. The patterns of variation of 12 morphological traits of 17 populations of wild pepper collected across a latitudinal and climate gradients in northwestern Mexico were analyzed in a uniform greenhouse experiment. The morphological traits data were axamined by univariate and multivarite analysis. The relationship between phenotypic variation and latitude of population origen was tested using linear regression analysis. We found high variation within and among populations for most of the measured traits. Populations were clearly differentiated by univariate analysis of variance… More >
