The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011418

Abstract In this talk, we will present a SPH formulation for coupled Thermal-Hydraulic-Mechanical processes. The Biot’s theory is used to model the fluid-solid interaction of saturated porous media, the Fourier’s law and the Newton’s law of cooling are used to describe the thermal conduction in a single medium and the heat exchange between the fluid and the solid, respectively. The physical model is expressed in the initial reference, and the total Lagrangian SPH is used to build the discrete formulation. We will discuss the numerical instability induced by twice repeated derivatives of discontinuous physical quantities, and More >

    Hongzhang Wang1, Jing Guo1, Shanjun Yang1, Chaoheng Cheng2, Jing Chen3,*, Zhihao Chen3

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.18, No.2, pp. 181-196, 2024, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2024.044628 - 22 March 2024

Abstract Pitting corrosion is harmful during bridge construction, which will lead to uneven roughness of steel surfaces and reduce the thickness of steel. Hence, the effect of pitting corrosion on the mechanical properties of cold-formed thin-walled steel stub columns is studied, and the empirical formulas are established through regression fitting to predict the ultimate load of web and flange under pitting corrosion. In detail, the failure modes and load-displacement curves of specimens with different locations, area ratios, and depths are obtained through a large number of non-linear finite element analysis. As for the specimens with pitting… More > Graphic Abstract

AI Fairness–From Machine Learning to Federated Learning

    Lalit Mohan Patnaik1,5, Wenfeng Wang2,3,4,5,6,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.2, pp. 1203-1215, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.029451 - 29 January 2024

Abstract This article reviews the theory of fairness in AI–from machine learning to federated learning, where the constraints on precision AI fairness and perspective solutions are also discussed. For a reliable and quantitative evaluation of AI fairness, many associated concepts have been proposed, formulated and classified. However, the inexplicability of machine learning systems makes it almost impossible to include all necessary details in the modelling stage to ensure fairness. The privacy worries induce the data unfairness and hence, the biases in the datasets for evaluating AI fairness are unavoidable. The imbalance between algorithms’ utility and humanization More >

Examining the Use of Scott’s Formula and Link Expiration Time Metric for Vehicular Clustering

    Fady Samann1,2,*, Shavan Askar3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.138, No.3, pp. 2421-2444, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.031265 - 15 December 2023

Abstract Implementing machine learning algorithms in the non-conducive environment of the vehicular network requires some adaptations due to the high computational complexity of these algorithms. K-clustering algorithms are simplistic, with fast performance and relative accuracy. However, their implementation depends on the initial selection of clusters number (K), the initial clusters’ centers, and the clustering metric. This paper investigated using Scott’s histogram formula to estimate the K number and the Link Expiration Time (LET) as a clustering metric. Realistic traffic flows were considered for three maps, namely Highway, Traffic Light junction, and Roundabout junction, to study the… More >

Abstract Cancer is a leading cause of death globally, with limited treatment options and several limitations. Chemotherapeutic agents often result in toxicity which long-term conventional treatment. Phytochemicals are natural constituents that are more effective in treating various diseases with less toxicity than the chemotherapeutic agents providing alternative therapeutic approaches to minimize the resistance. These phytoconstituents act in several ways and deliver optimum effectiveness against cancer. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of phyto-formulations in the management of cancers may be constrained due to challenges related to inadequate solubility, bioavailability, and stability. Nanotechnology presents a promising avenue for transforming current… More > Graphic Abstract

    Iqbal M. Batiha1,2,*, Iqbal H. Jebril1, Mohammad Zuriqat3, Hamza S. Kanaan4, Shaher Momani5,*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.21, pp. 487-504, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2023.045021 - 30 November 2023

Abstract Several researchers have dealt with the one-dimensional fractional heat conduction equation in the last decades, but as far as we know, no one has investigated such a problem from the perspective of developing suitable fractionalorder methods. This has actually motivated us to address this problem by the way of establishing a proper fractional approach that involves employing a combination of a novel fractional difference formula to approximate the Caputo differentiator of order α coupled with the modified three-point fractional formula to approximate the Caputo differentiator of order 2α, where 0 < α ≤ 1. Reformulation of the Virtual Fields Method Based on the Variation of Elastic Energy for Hyperelastic Materials

    Mingliang Jiang1, Zhujiang Wang2,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.26, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.08949

Abstract This work deals with the parameter identification of invariant-based hyperelastic materials using the virtual fields method (VFM). Combined with the full-field deformation data obtained from the digital image correlation (DIC), VFM has been utilized to characterize the mechanical properties of hyperelastic materials [1]. In the conventional formulation of the VFM, the calculation of the internal virtual work (IVW) needs to obtain the stress and conjugate virtual strains, which requires a lot of calculation and derivation work. In this paper, the VFM is reformulated by calculating the IVW through the variation of elastic energy, which is More >
