Theoretical Studies on Mechanical Behavior of Vesicles with Confined Filaments

    Xin Yi1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.012558

Abstract The intricate packing of elastic filaments, including cytoskeletal microtubules, actin filaments, and artificial nanotubes, is fundamental to understanding a plethora of cellular functions and their applications in cellular engineering. Through rigorous theoretical analysis, we investigate the packing dynamics of filaments within vesicles and explore the axial stretching of the vesicle–filament system. Our examination reveals how the interplay of stiffness and size ratios between filaments and vesicles drives transitions in vesicle configurations, prompting filament bending or coiling. We construct morphological phase diagrams to elucidate these transitional phenomena, highlighting the influence of pressurized vesicles in enhancing resistance More >

Abstract This article presents the results of experimental studies concerning the dynamic deformation and failure of a unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic (T700/LY113) under compression. The test samples were manufactured through the filament winding of flat plates. To establish the strain rate dependencies of the strength and elastic modulus of the material, dynamic tests were carried out using a drop tower, the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar method, and standard static tests. The samples were loaded both along and perpendicular to the direction of the reinforcing fiber. The applicability of the obtained samples for static and dynamic… More >

Dancing to a somewhat different rhythm: Cell migration along the natural basement membrane

    SHELDON R. GORDON*

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.9, pp. 2059-2063, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.019873 - 18 May 2022

Abstract Much of our understanding of the events which underlie cell migration has been derived from studies of cells in tissue culture. One of the components that mediates this process is the dynamic actin-based microfilament system that can reorganize itself into so-called stress fibers that are considered essential components for cell motility. In contrast, relatively few studies have investigated cell movement along an extracellular matrix (ECM) which is known to influence both cellular organization and behavior. This opinion/viewpoint article briefly reviews cell migration during corneal endothelial wound repair along the tissue’s natural basement membrane, Descemet’s membrane. More >

    M. T. Mastura1,*, R. Nadlene2, R. Jumaidin1, S. I. Abdul Kudus1, M. R. Mansor2, H. M. S. Firdaus1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.5, pp. 1221-1238, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.018082 - 22 December 2021

Abstract The employment of natural fibres in fused deposition modeling has raised much attention from researchers in finding a suitable formulation for the natural fibre composite filaments. Moreover, selection of suitable natural fibres for fused deposition modeling should be performed before the development of the composites. It could not be performed without identifying selection criteria that comprehend both materials and fused deposition modeling process requirements. Therefore, in this study, integration of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)/Analytic Network Process (ANP) has been introduced in selecting the natural fibres based in different clusters of selection concurrently. The selection… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.2, pp. 559-565, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.017437 - 20 October 2021

Abstract As an allohexaploid plant, common wheat has a complex gene structure, making it difficult to study its gene function. Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) is an important tool for the rapid analysis of plant gene function. In this study, the gene silencing system, namely, barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV)-VIGS induced by BSMV was used to silence the wheat phytoene desaturase (TaPDS) and actin depolymerization factor (TaADF7) genes and determine the effect of gene silencing on wheat. TaPDS was used as an indicator gene to determine the feasibility of VIGS system, while TaADF7 was used as a test gene… More >

A Hybrid Immersed Boundary/Coarse-Graining Method for Modeling Inextensible Semi-Flexible Filaments in Thermally Fluctuating Fluids

    Magdalini Ntetsika, Panayiotis Papadopoulos*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.129, No.3, pp. 1243-1258, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2021.017404 - 25 November 2021

Abstract A new and computationally efficient version of the immersed boundary method, which is combined with the coarse-graining method, is introduced for modeling inextensible filaments immersed in low-Reynolds number flows. This is used to represent actin biopolymers, which are constituent elements of the cytoskeleton, a complex network-like structure that plays a fundamental role in shape morphology. An extension of the traditional immersed boundary method to include a stochastic stress tensor is also proposed in order to model the thermal fluctuations in the fluid at smaller scales. By way of validation, the response of a single, massless, More >

    Guiying Wang1, Xigui Wang1,*, Hong Zhao2, Yinggang Huang1, Jinyong Ju1, E. E Erdun3

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.30, No.2, pp. 651-662, 2021, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2021.019274 - 11 August 2021

Abstract The aeronautics and aerospace industries often require special-shaped parts made from lightweight materials with a constant resistance, such as filament winding composite elbows and tees. Filament winding patterns can be realized using numerically controlled filament winding machines. Herein, a 3-axis computer controlled filament winding machine is proposed to solve existing problems with winding of composite elbows such as inconsistent quality, low productivity, and high costs. In this study, a geodesic winding equation for the torus and non-geodesic winding equation for the cylindrical sections of the elbow are provided and the winding angle α’ is optimized. More >
