Concurrent Design of Composite Structure and Continuous Toolpath for Additive Manufacturing of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Composites

    Huilin Ren1,2, David W. Rosen2, Yi Xiong1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.010920

Abstract The advancement of continuous fiber-reinforced polymer additive manufacturing (CFRP-AM) enables the fabrication of structures with complex geometries and superior properties. However, current design methodologies consider toolpath design and structure optimization as separate stages, with toolpath design typically serving as a post-processing step after structure optimization. This sequential methodology limits the full exploitation of fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPC) capabilities, particularly in achieving optimal structural integrity and manufacturability. In this paper, a manufacturing-oriented method is proposed for designing continuous FRPC structures, in which the structural layout and continuous fiber toolpaths are simultaneously optimized. The integrated design… More >

Optimizing Hybrid Fibre-Reinforced Polymer Bars Design: A Machine Learning Approach

    Aneel Manan1, Pu Zhang1,*, Shoaib Ahmad2, Jawad Ahmad2

    Journal of Polymer Materials, Vol.41, No.1, pp. 15-44, 2024, DOI:10.32604/jpm.2024.053859 - 21 June 2024

Abstract Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars are gaining popularity as an alternative to steel reinforcement due to their advantages such as corrosion resistance and high strength-to-weight ratio. However, FRP has a lower modulus of elasticity compared to steel. Therefore, special attention is required in structural design to address deflection related issues and ensure ductile failure. This research explores the use of machine learning algorithms such as gene expression programming (GEP) to develop a simple and effective equation for predicting the elastic modulus of hybrid fiber-reinforced polymer (HFPR) bars. A comprehensive database of 125 experimental results of HFPR… More >

Nonlinear Micromechanical Modelling of Transverse Tensile Damage Behavior in Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Composites

    Nian Li*

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.13, No.4, pp. 331-346, 2019, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2019.07521

Abstract The investigation focusing on the mechanical behaviors at the microstructural level in composite materials can provide valuable insight into the failure mechanisms at larger scales. A micromechanics damage model which comprises the coupling of the matrix constitutive model and the cohesive zone (CZM) model at fiber-matrix interfaces is presented to evaluate the transverse tensile damage behaviors of unidirectional (UD) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. For the polymeric matrix that exhibits highly non-linear mechanical responses, special focus is paid on the formulation of the constitutive model, which characterizes a mixture of elasticity, plasticity as well as damage.… More >

Modeling of moisture diffusion in permeable fiber-reinforced polymer composites using heterogeneous hybrid moisture element method

    De-Shin Liu, Zhen-Wei Zhuang, Cho-Liang Chung

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.19, No.2, pp. 39-40, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.019.039

Abstract A two-dimensional heterogeneous hybrid moisture element method (HHMEM) for modeling transient moisture diffusion in permeable fiber-reinforced polymer composites is proposed in this paper.
The HHMEM scheme is based on a heterogeneous hybrid moisture element (HHME), whose properties are determined by equivalent moisture capacitance and conductance matrixes calculated using the conventional finite element formulation with the similarity mass/stiffness property and matrix condensing operations. A coupled HHME-FE scheme is developed and implemented in computer codes MATLAB to analyze the transient moisture diffusion characteristics of polymeric composite materials containing multiple permeable fibers. The analysis commences by comparing the… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.26, No.2, pp. 111-136, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.026.111

Abstract This study proposes a two-dimensional heterogeneous hybrid moisture element method (HHMEM) for modeling transient moisture diffusion in permeable fiber-reinforced polymer composites.
The HHMEM scheme is based on a heterogeneous hybrid moisture element(HHME), with properties determined through an equivalent hybrid moisture capacitance/conductance matrix. This matrix was calculated using the conventional finite element formulation in space discretization as well as the θ-method in time discretization with similar mass/stiffness properties and matrix condensing operations. A coupled HHME-FE scheme was developed and implemented in computer code MATLAB in order to analyze the transient moisture diffusion characteristics of composite materials containing multiple… More >

    M. Vogler1, G. Ernst1, R. Rolfes1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.16, No.1, pp. 25-50, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.016.025

Abstract In this article, a constitutive formulation of a transversely-isotropic material and failure model for fiber-reinforced polymers is presented comprising pre-failure material nonlinearities, a novel invariant based quadratic failure criterion (IQC) as well as post failure material softening. The failure surface of the IQ criterion is assumed to take the influence of triaxiality on fracture into account. Further, a distinction between fiber failure and inter-fiber failure is conducted. Material softening is governed by a fracture energy formulation and the introduction of an internal length. The constitutive model is implemented into a programming user interface of the More >
