    Dayong Huang1,2,*, Wenjun Wang1,2, Xiaofu Tang1,2, Pengfei Zhu3, Xianqiong Zhao3,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.34, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2025, DOI:10.32604/icces.2025.012063

Abstract Accurate prediction for the tensile properties (tensile modulus and strength) of injection molded fiber-reinforced thermoplastics (IMFT) plays an important role in the design of structures made with such composites. Based on the Laminate analogy approach (LAA), a unified distribution function (UDF) of tensile properties is derived by introducing the assumption that the fiber length distribution (FLD) and fiber orientation distribution (FOD) are independent of each other. The UDF of tensile properties is simplified by introducing the modified monotonic functions of fiber length and orientation factors (λL and λO). Compared with the tensile modulus and strength… More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.33, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2025, DOI:10.32604/icces.2025.011553

Abstract The rigidity of the resin matrix is a critical factor affecting the impact resistance of composites [1]. However, the intrinsic relationship between resin matrix rigidity and ballistic performance remains insufficiently understood. To reveal the influence mechanisms of resin matrix rigidity on ballistic performance, this study compares the ballistic limits of PBO-140, PBO-200, Aramid III, and Aramid II fiber reinforced composites with resin matrices of different rigidities (epoxy resin, PX90, and PX30) through ballistic impact tests. The experimental results show that, the ballistic limit of composites with PX90 resin is higher than that of composites with… More >

Kartikey Shahi, Velmurugan Ramachandran*, Ranjith Mohan, Boomurugan Ramachandran

    Journal of Polymer Materials, Vol.42, No.2, pp. 477-496, 2025, DOI:10.32604/jpm.2025.062481 - 14 July 2025

Abstract A Shape Memory Polymer Composite (SMPC) is developed by reinforcing an epoxy-based polymer with randomly oriented short glass fibers. Diverging from previous research, which primarily focused on the hot programming of short glass fiber-based SMPCs, this work explores the potential for programming below the glass transition temperature (Tg) for epoxy-based SMPCs. To mitigate the inherent brittleness of the SMPC during deformation, a linear polymer is incorporated, and a temperature between room temperature and Tg is chosen as the deformation temperature to study the shape memory properties. The findings demonstrate an enhancement in shape fixity and More >

Abstract Embedding optical fiber sensors into composite materials offers the advantage of real-time structural monitoring. However, there is an order-of-magnitude difference in diameter between optical fibers and reinforcing fibers, and the detailed mechanism of how embedded optical fibers affect the micromechanical behavior and damage failure processes within composite materials remains unclear. This paper presents a micromechanical simulation analysis of composite materials embedded with optical fibers. By constructing representative volume elements (RVEs) with randomly distributed reinforcing fibers, the optical fiber, the matrix, and the interface phase, the micromechanical behavior and damage evolution under transverse tensile and compressive… More >

    Zhoucheng Su1,*, Dan Wang1, Yucheng Zhong2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.31, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.012259

Abstract In this study, we developed a micromechanical model for exploring the longitudinal tensile behavior of unidirectional discontinuous flax fiber reinforced epoxy composites, emphasizing the significant roles of the aspect ratio of fibers and fiber-matrix interfacial properties. Representative volume elements (RVEs) are built using a novel approach which accounts for the randomness of the fiber distribution, discontinuity of the fibers, and the modeling of the interfaces as cohesive zone elements.
Finite element simulations of the RVEs under longitudinal tension were performed with proper periodic boundary conditions (PBCs). We investigated how fiber aspect ratio, interfacial properties and matrix… More >

    Yu Gong1,*, Jianyu Zhang1, Libin Zhao2, Ning Hu2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.3, pp. 1-2, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011451

Abstract Advanced carbon fiber reinforced composite materials are increasingly being used in aerospace and other fields. Composite laminate structure is one of the commonly used configurations, but due to weak interlayer performance, interlayer delamination is prone to occur [1]. The occurrence and growth of delamination will seriously affect the overall integrity and safety of composite structures, making it a focus of attention in the design of laminated structures. Accurately characterizing the delamination mechanical properties of composite laminates and simulating delamination propagation behavior is the basis for damage tolerance design and analysis of composite structures with delamination… More >
