Experiments and Analyses on Heat Transfer Characteristics from a Solid Wall to a Strip-Shaped Wick Structure

    Kenta Hashimoto1, Guohui Sun1, Yasushi Koito2,*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.22, No.3, pp. 687-702, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2024.052928

Abstract Centered or striped wick structures have been used to develop ultrathin heat pipes. Differing from traditional heat pipes, the centered or striped wick structures leave noncontact container surfaces with the wick structure. In this study, experiments and numerical analyses were conducted to investigate the influence of these noncontact surfaces. In the experiments, a strip-shaped wick structure was placed vertically, the top was sandwiched between wider rods and the bottom was immersed in a working fluid. The rod width was greater than the wick width; thus, noncontact surfaces were left between the rod and the wick… More >

A CORRELATION FOR NUSSELT NUMBER UNDER TURBULENT MIXED CONVECTION USING TRANSIENT HEAT TRANSFER EXPERIMENTS

    N. Gnanasekaran, C. Balaji*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.2, No.2, pp. 1-6, 2011, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v2.2.3008

Abstract This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation of transient, turbulent mixed convection in a vertical channel in which one of the walls is heated and the other is adiabatic. The goal is to simultaneously estimate the constants in a Nusselt number correlation whose form is assumed a priori by synergistically marrying the experimental results with repeated numerical calculations that assume guess values of the constants. The convective heat transfer coefficient “h”is replaced by the Nusselt number (Nu) and the constants in the Nusselt number are to be evaluated. From the experimentally obtained temperature More >

CONJUGATE HEAT TRANSFER FROM A FLAT PLATE WITH SHOWER HEAD IMPINGING JETS

    Rajesh Kumar Panda, B.V.S.S.S. Prasad*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.2, No.1, pp. 1-10, 2011, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v2.1.3008

Abstract Conjugate heat transfer from a flat circular disk is investigated both computationally and experimentally with a constant heat flux imposed on its bottom surface and a shower head of air jets impinging on the top surface. The shower head consists of a central jet surrounded by four neighboring perimeter jets. Measured temperature data at twelve locations within the plate are compared with the conjugate heat transfer result obtained at the same locations computationally by Shear Stress Transport (SST) κ-ω turbulence model. The spacing to orifice diameter ratio (H/d = 1 to 4), the jet Reynolds… More >

EXPERIMENTS ON DOMINANT FORCE REGIMES IN FLOW BOILING USING MINI-TUBES

Soumei Babaa,*, Nobuo Ohtania, Osamu Kawanamib, Koichi Inouec, Haruhiko Ohtaa

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.3, No.4, pp. 1-8, 2012, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v3.4.3002

Abstract Effects of tube orientation on flow boiling heat transfer coefficients were investigated for FC72 flowing in single mini-tubes with tube diameters of 0.13 and 0.51 mm to define boundaries on a dominant force regime map. For the tube diameter of 0.51 mm, when mass velocity and vapor quality was varied, heat transfer coefficients were influenced by tube orientation at Froude number Fr < 4, while the effect of tube orientation on heat transfer coefficients disappears at Fr > 4. The results indicated that the boundary between the body force dominated and the inertia dominated regimes was… More >

EXPERIMENTS ON HEAT TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS OF SHEARDRIVEN LIQUID FILM IN CO-CURRENT GAS FLOW

Tomoki Hirokawaa,*, Masahiko Murozonoa, Oleg Kabovb,c, Haruhiko Ohtaa

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.5, pp. 1-8, 2014, DOI:10.5098/hmt.5.17

Abstract Experiments are performed to study the liquid film behavior and corresponding local heat transfer to shear-driven liquid film flow of water in the cocurrent nitrogen gas flow. The heated channel has a cross section of 30mm in width and 5mm in height, where the bottom is operated as a heating surface of 30mm in width and 100mm in length. The heated section is divided into segments to evaluate the local heat transfer coefficients. Under most gas Reynolds numbers, the local heat transfer coefficients are increased with increasing heat flux, where three mechanisms are important; (i) More >

Anisotropic Mechanical Behaviors of Alsi10Mg Alloy Fabricated by Additive Manufacturing: Experiments and Modeling

    Shi Dai1, Yanping Lian1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.25, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.010175

Abstract In recent years, metal additive manufacturing (AM) has gained increasing attention from various industries. However, there are few studies on the thermal deformation behavior of additively manufactured metallic components, which is vital to pushing its applications’ boundary. In this work, we first experimentally investigate the mechanical behavior of AlSi10Mg produced by laser powder bed fusion under different temperatures and strain rates. A crystal plasticity finite element model is adopted to provide insights into the intrinsic deformation mechanisms. The model is validated by comparing it with the flow behaviors and dislocation evolutions observed in experiments at More >

Experimental Investigation on Pure-Shear Ratcheting Behavior of Double-Network Tough Hydrogels

    Xuelian Zhang1, Junjie Liu1,*, Jian Li2, Zhihong Liang1, Han Jiang1, Guozheng Kang1, Qianhua Kan1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.25, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.010142

Abstract The last decades have witnessed the real and huge potential applications of hydrogels in various areas, including biomedicine, soft robotics, and flexible electronics. The fatigue of hydrogels challenges their reliability and longevity in service, but the related works are not sufficient. In this work, stress-controlled cyclic fatigue tests of a double-network tough hydrogel, consisting of polyacrylamide and alginate polymer networks, under pure shear deformation are investigated. The effects of peak stress, loading rate, peak stress holding time, and environmental relative humidity on the fatigue of the double-network tough hydrogel are considered. The results show that… More >

Reliability Analysis of HEE Parameters via Progressive Type-II Censoring with Applications

    Heba S. Mohammed1, Mazen Nassar2,3, Refah Alotaibi1, Ahmed Elshahhat4,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.137, No.3, pp. 2761-2793, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.028826

Abstract A new extended exponential lifetime model called Harris extended-exponential (HEE) distribution for data modelling with increasing and decreasing hazard rate shapes has been considered. In the reliability context, researchers prefer to use censoring plans to collect data in order to achieve a compromise between total test time and/or test sample size. So, this study considers both maximum likelihood and Bayesian estimates of the Harris extended-exponential distribution parameters and some of its reliability indices using a progressive Type-II censoring strategy. Under the premise of independent gamma priors, the Bayesian estimation is created using the squared-error and… More >

Process Characterization of the Transesterification of Rapeseed Oil to Biodiesel Using Design of Experiments and Infrared Spectroscopy

    Tobias Drieschner1,2,*, Andreas Kandelbauer1, Bernd Hitzmann2, Karsten Rebner1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 1643-1660, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.024429

Abstract For optimization of production processes and product quality, often knowledge of the factors influencing the process outcome is compulsory. Thus, process analytical technology (PAT) that allows deeper insight into the process and results in a mathematical description of the process behavior as a simple function based on the most important process factors can help to achieve higher production efficiency and quality. The present study aims at characterizing a well-known industrial process, the transesterification reaction of rapeseed oil with methanol to produce fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) for usage as biodiesel in a continuous micro reactor… More >
