    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.26, No.2, pp. 93-103, 2024, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2023.043226

Abstract Background: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between parental educational expectations and adolescent mental health problems, with academic pressure as a moderating variable. Methods: This study was based on the baseline data of the China Education Panel Survey, which was collected within one school year during 2013–2014. It included 19,958 samples from seventh and ninth graders, who ranged from 11 to 18 years old. After removing missing values and conducting relevant data processing, the effective sample size for analysis was 16344. The OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) multiple linear regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between parental educational… More >

    Osama A. Khashan1,*, Sultan Alamri2, Waleed Alomoush3, Mutasem K. Alsmadi4, Samer Atawneh2, Usama Mir5

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.75, No.2, pp. 3133-3158, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.036217

Abstract In recent times, technology has advanced significantly and is currently being integrated into educational environments to facilitate distance learning and interaction between learners. Integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) into education can facilitate the teaching and learning process and expand the context in which students learn. Nevertheless, learning data is very sensitive and must be protected when transmitted over the network or stored in data centers. Moreover, the identity and the authenticity of interacting students, instructors, and staff need to be verified to mitigate the impact of attacks. However, most of the current security and authentication schemes are centralized, relying… More >

Evolutionary Algorithm Based Feature Subset Selection for Students Academic Performance Analysis

    Ierin Babu1,*, R. MathuSoothana2, S. Kumar2

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.36, No.3, pp. 3621-3636, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.033791

Abstract Educational Data Mining (EDM) is an emergent discipline that concentrates on the design of self-learning and adaptive approaches. Higher education institutions have started to utilize analytical tools to improve students’ grades and retention. Prediction of students’ performance is a difficult process owing to the massive quantity of educational data. Therefore, Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques can be used for educational data mining in a big data environment. At the same time, in EDM, the feature selection process becomes necessary in creation of feature subsets. Since the feature selection performance affects the predictive performance of any model, it is important to elaborately… More >

Threefold Optimized Forecasting of Electricity Consumption in Higher Education Institutions

Majida Kazmi1,*, Hashim Raza Khan1,2, Lubaba2, Mohammad Hashir Bin Khalid2, Saad Ahmed Qazi1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.73, No.2, pp. 2351-2370, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.026265

Abstract Energy management benefits both consumers and utility companies alike. Utility companies remain interested in identifying and reducing energy waste and theft, whereas consumers’ interest remain in lowering their energy expenses. A large supply-demand gap of over 6 GW exists in Pakistan as reported in 2018. Reducing this gap from the supply side is an expensive and complex task. However, efficient energy management and distribution on demand side has potential to reduce this gap economically. Electricity load forecasting models are increasingly used by energy managers in taking real-time tactical decisions to ensure efficient use of resources. Advancement in Machine-learning (ML) technology… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.71, No.1, pp. 1233-1247, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.021652

Abstract Recent advancements in computer technologies for data processing, collection, and storage have offered several chances to improve the abilities in production, services, communication, and researches. Data mining (DM) is an interdisciplinary field commonly used to extract useful patterns from the data. At the same time, educational data mining (EDM) is a kind of DM concept, which finds use in educational sector. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) techniques can be used for mining a large amount of data. At the same time, in DM, the feature selection process becomes necessary to generate subset of features and can be solved by the use… More >

A Mathematical Optimization Model for Maintenance Planning of School Buildings

    Mehdi Zandiyehvakili1, Babak Aminnejad2,*, Alireza Lork3

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.32, No.1, pp. 499-512, 2022, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2022.021461

Abstract This article presents a methodology to optimize the maintenance planning model and minimize the total maintenance costs of a typical school building. It makes an effort to provide a maintenance schedule, focusing on maintenance costs. In the allocation of operations to the school equipment, the parameter of its age was also taken into account. A mathematical optimization model to minimize the school maintenance cost in a three-year period was provided in the GAMS software with CPLEX solver. Finally, the optimum architecture of the Perceptron multi-layer neural network was used to predict the schedule of equipment operations and maintenance costs. The… More >

Educational Videos Subtitles’ Summarization Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation and Length Enhancement

    Sarah S. Alrumiah*, Amal A. Al-Shargabi

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.70, No.3, pp. 6205-6221, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.021780

Abstract Nowadays, people use online resources such as educational videos and courses. However, such videos and courses are mostly long and thus, summarizing them will be valuable. The video contents (visual, audio, and subtitles) could be analyzed to generate textual summaries, i.e., notes. Videos’ subtitles contain significant information. Therefore, summarizing subtitles is effective to concentrate on the necessary details. Most of the existing studies used Term Frequency–Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) and Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) models to create lectures’ summaries. This study takes another approach and applies Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), which proved its effectiveness in document summarization. Specifically, the proposed… More >

Short Text Mining for Classifying Educational Objectives and Outcomes

    Yousef Asiri*

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.41, No.1, pp. 35-50, 2022, DOI:10.32604/csse.2022.020100

Abstract Most of the international accreditation bodies in engineering education (e.g., ABET) and outcome-based educational systems have based their assessments on learning outcomes and program educational objectives. However, mapping program educational objectives (PEOs) to student outcomes (SOs) is a challenging and time-consuming task, especially for a new program which is applying for ABET-EAC (American Board for Engineering and Technology the American Board for Engineering and Technology—Engineering Accreditation Commission) accreditation. In addition, ABET needs to automatically ensure that the mapping (classification) is reasonable and correct. The classification also plays a vital role in the assessment of students’ learning. Since the PEOs are… More >

    Mamoona Majid1, Muhammad Faisal Hayat2, Farrukh Zeeshan Khan3, Muneer Ahmad4,*, NZ Jhanjhi5, Mohammad Arif Sobhan Bhuiyan6, Mehedi Masud7, Mohammed A. AlZain8

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 373-386, 2021, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2021.017840

Abstract Choosing the right university program can be very challenging for students. This is especially the case in developing countries such as India and Pakistan, where university admission depends on not only the program of interest but also other factors such as the candidate’s financial standing. Since information on the Internet can be highly scattered, university candidates often need counseling from qualified people to decide their educational programs. Traditional database systems cannot effectively organize the large unstructured data related to university programs. It is challenging, then, for prospective students to acquire the information needed to make good decisions to consider factors… More >
