Abstract Utilizing biomass waste as a potential resource for cellulose production holds promise in mitigating environmental consequences. The current study aims to utilize pineapple biowaste extract in producing bacterial cellulose acetate-based membranes with magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4 nanoparticles) through the fermentation and esterification process and explore its characteristics. The bacterial cellulose fibrillation used a high-pressure homogenization procedure, and membranes were developed incorporating 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 wt.% of Fe3O4 nanoparticles as magnetic nanoparticle for functionalization. The membrane characteristics were measured in terms of Scanning Electron Microscope, X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared, Vibrating Sample Magnetometer, antibacterial activity, bacterial… More > Graphic Abstract

Investigation of Polypyrrole and Polypyrrolepolyethyleneimine as Adsorbents for Methyl Orange Dye Adsorption

NORHABIBAH MOHAMAD1,*, NOORDINI M. SALLEH1,2, HABIBUN NABI MUHAMMAD EKRAMUL MAHMUD1

    Journal of Polymer Materials, Vol.40, No.3-4, pp. 165-189, 2023, DOI:10.32381/JPM.2023.40.3-4.4

Abstract The present study has explored the adsorption properties of polypyrrole-based adsorbents (polypyrrole and polypyrrole-polyethyleneimine composite) as novel conducting polymers in adsorbing methyl orange (MO) (an anionic dye) effectively from aqueous solution. The adsorption characteristics of the prepared polymer-based adsorbents were characterized by BET, FTIR, FESEM, and XRD methods. The effectiveness of PPy-based adsorbents for MO dye adsorption was examined using the batch adsorption method. Different parameters were changed during the adsorption process, including contact time, solution pH, and adsorbent dosage. The highest BET surface area of the PPy-PEI composite was found to be 11.85 m2 /g,… More >

Fabricating Cationic Lignin Hydrogels for Dye Adsorption

Chao Wang, Xuezhen Feng, Wanbing Li, Shibin Shang*, Haibo Zhang*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 1793-1805, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.024521 - 01 December 2022

Abstract Due to the low content of adsorption-active groups in lignin, its application in the field of adsorption is limited. Herein, we first prepared cationic kraft lignin acrylate, from which a cationic lignin (CKLA) hydrogel was further prepared by cationic kraft lignin acrylate, acrylamide, and N, N’-methylenebisacrylamide. The morphology, compression properties and swelling properties of CKLA hydrogels were investigated. The prepared CKLA hydrogel was applied as an adsorbent for Congo red. The effect of CKLA hydrogel dosages, initial concentration of Congo red, and pH on adsorption efficiency was investigated. The maximum Congo red removal efficiency was More >

    Abstract

The preparation and application of functional hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides have always been a hot research topic. In this study, using acrylamide (AM) monomer, N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as cross-linking agent, potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) as initiator, in the presence of natural polysaccharide sodium alginate (SA), the PAM/SA hydrogel was prepared by free radical polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), swelling performance tests, scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UV-visible spectrophotometer, mechanical property measurements were carried out to analyze the composition, morphology, and performance of the hydrogels. The swelling behavior, dye adsorption performance, and the

Alginate Composite Hydrogel Bead with Multilayer Flake Structure for Dye Adsorptions

    Xiaoyu Chen*, Jie Zhu

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.10, pp. 983-996, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.07325

Abstract With the rapid development of textile industry, a large amount of dye-contaminated effluents was produced and caused serious environmental problem. To remove the dye from effluents, adsorption materials have been applied because of their relatively cheap, high efficiency, and easy handling. In this study, a novel composite hydrogel bead with unique multilayer flake structure was fabricated by alginate, acrylamide and attapulgite for dye adsorption. Acrylamide was grafted polymerization onto alginate to obtain alginate-g-poly(acrylamide). Then alginate-g-poly(acrylamide) was cross-linked by Ca2+ ions in present of attapulgite to form composite hydrogel bead. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results show that… More >
