Abstract Readily available chemical fertilizers have resulted in a decline in the use of organic manure (e.g., green manures), a traditionally sustainable source of nutrients. Based on this, we applied urea at the rate of 270 kg ha−1 with and without green manure in order to assess nitrogen (N) productivity in a double rice cropping system in 2017. In particular, treatment combinations were as follows: winter fallow rice-rice (WF-R-R), milk vetch rice-rice (MV-R-R), oil-seed rape rice-rice (R-R-R) and potato crop rice-rice (P-R-R). Results revealed that green manure significantly (p ≤ 0.05) improved the soil chemical properties and… More >

Canola and Oat Forage Potential Evaluation in Four Early Planting Dates

Juan Isidro Sánchez-Duarte1, David Guadalupe Reta-Sánchez1,*, José Antonio Cueto-Wong1, Arturo Reyes-González1, Esmeralda Ochoa-Martínez1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.88, No.4, pp. 435-448, 2019, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2019.07512

Abstract Canola and oat forage potential may be affected by climatic conditions when sown early. The objective of this study was to evaluate the forage canola and oat potential in four early sowing dates (September 11 and 25; October 9 and 23) during the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 cycles in Matamoros, Coahuila, Mexico. Growth cycle duration, chemical composition, dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), and net energy for lactation (NEL) yields were determined. High temperatures and long photoperiods affected crops seeded on September 11, accelerating growth and reducing canola (26.6%-31.7%) and oat (15.8%) DM yields. As of September… More >

Defoliation management of kleingrass (Panicum coloratum L. var coloratum) cv Verde

Ferri CM, VV Jouve, AM Sáenz

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.86, pp. 190-198, 2017, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2017.86.190

Abstract The defoliation frequency determines above and below ground biomass accumulation, pasture structure and nutritive value. Two defoliation experiments with Panicum coloratum were performed, from September to March. One of them was conducted in pots under greenhouse conditions, and the other one in field plots for three growing seasons (EC) at the Faculty of Agronomy, La Pampa, Argentina (36˚ 46' S; 64˚ 16' W). Defoliation frequency treatments were four cutting intervals (IC; 3, 4, 6 and 8 weeks). In greenhouse experiment, live leaf blade accumulation rates (TAL), tiller appearance (TAM) and death (TMM) rates, live leaf blade… More >

Effects of plant height and row spacing on kenaf forage potential with multiple harvests

    Reta-Sánchez DG1, JS Serrato-Corona2, HM Quiroga-Garza1, A Gaytán-Mascorro1, JA Cueto-Wong1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.84, No.2, pp. 262-271, 2015, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2015.84.262

Abstract Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) forage potential can be enhanced through its regrowth capacity and higher production in narrow rows. A field experiment was conducted in Matamoros, Coahuila, Mexico, during 2 growing seasons (2004 and 2005) to study the effects of plant height and row spacing on kenaf forage potential with multiple harvests. This study evaluated the effects of (1) 2 plant heights at cutting (1.0-1.2 m and 1.8-2.0 m) and (2) 4 inter row spacings (0.19, 0.38, 0.57 and 0.76 m) using a 2 x 4 factorial arrangement of treatments in a completely randomized block design… More >
