    L.L. Chen1, H.B. Chen1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.107, No.3, pp. 249-276, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.107.249

Abstract Engineers have started to develop ways to decrease noise radiation. Structural-acoustic design sensitivity analysis can provide information on how changes in design variable affect the radiated acoustic performance. As such, it is an important step in the structural-acoustic design and in optimization processes. For thin structures immersed in water, a full interaction between the structural domain and the fluid domain needs to be taken into account. In this work, the finite element method is used to model the structure parts and the boundary element method is applied to the exterior acoustic problem. The formula of the sound pressure sensitivity based… More >

    B. J. Zhu1,2, Z. X. Hou1, Y. F. Lu1, S. Q. Shan1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.105, No.6, pp. 467-490, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.105.467

Abstract This paper mainly analyzes the dynamic soaring of UAV utilizing gradient wind. Dynamic soaring is an efficient path in which UAV absorbs energy from environment to enhance its flight endurance. A set of three-dimensional point dynamic equations for a soaring aircraft in three degrees of freedom is used in calculations. To simplify the calculation, the gradient wind’s direction is taken into decomposition. The notion of trajectory subsection analysis is applied to account for the energy transformation mechanism during the dynamic soaring, and the zone of direction is converted into cutting-in angle, which is regarded as initial limiting condition in the… More >

    C.M.T. Tien1, N. Thai-Quang1, N. Mai-Duy1, C.-D. Tran1, T. Tran-Cong1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.104, No.6, pp. 425-469, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.104.425

Abstract In this paper, we propose a three-point coupled compact integrated radial basis function (CCIRBF) approximation scheme for the discretisation of second-order differential problems in one and two dimensions. The CCIRBF employs integrated radial basis functions (IRBFs) to construct the approximations for its first and second derivatives over a three-point stencil in each direction. Nodal values of the first and second derivatives (i.e. extra information), incorporated into approximations by means of the constants of integration, are simultaneously employed to compute the first and second derivatives. The essence of the CCIRBF scheme is to couple the extra information of the nodal first… More >

Voxel-based Analysis of Electrostatic Fields in Virtual-human Model Duke using Indirect Boundary Element Method with Fast Multipole Method

    S. Hamada1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.102, No.5, pp. 407-424, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.102.407

Abstract The voxel-based indirect boundary element method (IBEM) combined with the Laplace-kernel fast multipole method (FMM) is capable of analyzing relatively large-scale problems. A typical application of the IBEM is the electric field analysis in virtual-human models such as the model called Duke provided by the foundation for research on information technologies in society (IT’IS Foundation). An important property of voxel-version Duke models is that they have various voxel sizes but the same structural feature. This property is useful for examining the O(N) and O(D2) dependencies of the calculation times and the amount of memory required by the FMM-IBEM, where NMore >

Direct Volume-to-Surface Integral Transformation for 2D BEM Analysis of Anisotropic Thermoelasticity

    Y.C. Shiah1, Chung-Lei Hsu1, Chyanbin Hwu1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.102, No.4, pp. 257-270, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.102.257

Abstract As has been well documented for the boundary element method (BEM), a volume integral is present in the integral equation for thermoelastic analysis. Any attempt to directly integrate the integral shall inevitably involve internal discretization that will destroy the BEM’s distinctive notion as a true boundary solution technique. Among the schemes to overcome this difficulty, the exact transformation approach is the most elegant since neither further approximation nor internal treatments are involved. Such transformation for 2D anisotropic thermoelasticity has been achieved by Shiah and Tan (1999) with the aid of domain mapping. This paper revisits this problem and presents a… More >

Friction and Wear Modelling in Fiber-Reinforced Composites

    L. Rodríguez-Tembleque1, M.H. Aliabadi2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.102, No.3, pp. 183-210, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.102.183

Abstract This work presents new contact constitutive laws for friction and wear modelling in fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP). These laws are incorporated to a numerical methodology which allows us to solve the contact problem taking into account the anisotropic tribological properties on the interfaces. This formulation uses the Boundary Element Method for computing the elastic influence coefficients. Furthermore, the formulation considers micromechanical models for FRP that also makes it possible to take into account the fiber orientation relative to the sliding direction, the fiber volume fraction, the aspect ratio of fibers, or the fiber arrangement. The proposed contact and wear laws, as… More >

A Direct Forcing Immersed Boundary Method Employed With Compact Integrated RBF Approximations For Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Problems

    N. Thai-Quang1, N. Mai-Duy1, C.-D. Tran1, T. Tran-Cong1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.96, No.1, pp. 49-90, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.096.049

Abstract In this paper, we present a numerical scheme, based on the direct forcing immersed boundary (DFIB) approach and compact integrated radial basis function (CIRBF) approximations, for solving the Navier-Stokes equations in two dimensions. The problem domain of complicated shape is embedded in a Cartesian grid containing Eulerian nodes. Non-slip conditions on the inner boundaries, represented by Lagrangian nodes, are imposed by means of the DFIB method, in which a smoothed version of the discrete delta functions is utilised to transfer the physical quantities between two types of nodes. The velocities and pressure variables are approximated locally on Eulerian nodes using… More >

    L.L. Chen1, H.B. Chen2, C.J. Zheng3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.94, No.6, pp. 459-483, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.094.459

Abstract A coupling algorithm based on the finite element method and the wideband fast multipole boundary element method (FEM/wideband FMBEM) is proposed for the simulation of fluid-structure interaction and structural-acoustic sensitivity analysis using the direct differentiation method. The wideband fast multipole method (FMM) formed by combining the original FMM and the diagonal form FMM is used to accelerate the matrix-vector products in the boundary element analysis. The iterative solver GMRES is applied to accelerate the solution of the linear system of equations. The FEM/Wideband FMBEM algorithm makes it possible to predict the effects of arbitrarily shaped vibrating structures on the sound… More >

    A. Tadeu1, P. Stanak2, J. Sladek2, V. Sladek2, J. Prata1, N. Simões1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.93, No.6, pp. 489-516, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.093.489

Abstract This paper presents a technique that couples the boundary element method (BEM) with the meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method, formulated in the frequency domain. It is then used to study the transient heat diffusion through a two-dimensional unbounded medium containing confined subdomains where the material properties vary from point to point. To exploit the advantages of each method, the BEM is used for the homogeneous unbounded domain and the MLPG method is used for the non-homogeneous confined subdomains. The nodal points placed at the interface between the confined subdomains and the unbounded homogenous medium are used to couple the BEM… More >

A Scalar Homotopy Method with Optimal Hybrid Search Directions for Solving Nonlinear Algebraic Equations

    Weichung Yeih1,2, Cheng-Yu Ku1,2,3, Chein-Shan Liu4, I-Yao Chan1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.90, No.4, pp. 255-282, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.090.255

Abstract In this paper, a scalar homotopy method with optimal hybrid search directions for solving nonlinear algebraic equations is proposed. To conduct the proposed method, we first convert the vector residual function to a scalar function by taking the square norm of the vector function and then, introduce a fictitious time variable to form a scalar homotopy function. To improve the convergence and the accuracy of the proposed method, a vector with multiple search directions and an iterative algorithm are introduced into the evolution dynamics of the solutions. Further, for obtaining the optimal search direction, linear and nonlinear optimization algorithms are… More >
