First Principles Calculations for Corrosion in Mg-Li-Al Alloys with Focus on Corrosion Resistance: A Comprehensive Review

    Muhammad Abdullah Khan1, Muhammad Usman2, Yuhong Zhao1,3,4,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.81, No.2, pp. 1905-1952, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2024.054691 - 18 November 2024

Abstract This comprehensive review examines the structural, mechanical, electronic, and thermodynamic properties of Mg-Li-Al alloys, focusing on their corrosion resistance and mechanical performance enhancement. Utilizing first-principles calculations based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) and the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA), the combined properties of the Mg-Li-Al phase are explored, revealing superior incompressibility, shear resistance, and stiffness compared to individual elements. The review highlights the brittleness of the alloy, supported by B/G ratios, Cauchy pressures, and Poisson’s ratios. Electronic structure analysis shows metallic behavior with varied covalent bonding characteristics, while Mulliken population analysis emphasizes significant electron transfer within the… More >

Investigation on Microstructural Evolution and Corrosion Resistance Improvement of E690 Steel via Underwater Laser Directed Energy Deposition

    Mingzhi Chen1, Zhandong Wang2, Guifang Sun1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.4, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.012203

Abstract Marine environments pose severe corrosion challenges to underwater equipment, thereby leading to significant risks and demanding immediate in-situ restoration. Here we developed an underwater laser directed energy deposition (UDMD) technique to repair the E690 steel and enhance its corrosion resistance. Systematic investigations about the underwater pressure (P) and 316L stainless steel (SS316L) coatings on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of the repaired E690 steel were conducted. Results show that water cooling can refine grain, promote the formation of lath martensite, and increase dislocation density. No obvious relationship between the pressure and microstructure evolution… More >

Optimizing Hybrid Fibre-Reinforced Polymer Bars Design: A Machine Learning Approach

    Aneel Manan1, Pu Zhang1,*, Shoaib Ahmad2, Jawad Ahmad2

    Journal of Polymer Materials, Vol.41, No.1, pp. 15-44, 2024, DOI:10.32604/jpm.2024.053859 - 21 June 2024

Abstract Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars are gaining popularity as an alternative to steel reinforcement due to their advantages such as corrosion resistance and high strength-to-weight ratio. However, FRP has a lower modulus of elasticity compared to steel. Therefore, special attention is required in structural design to address deflection related issues and ensure ductile failure. This research explores the use of machine learning algorithms such as gene expression programming (GEP) to develop a simple and effective equation for predicting the elastic modulus of hybrid fiber-reinforced polymer (HFPR) bars. A comprehensive database of 125 experimental results of HFPR… More >

Improved Corrosion Resistance of Carbon Reinforced Aluminium Laminates in Atmospheric Environment: Role of Environment Friendly Jute Fibre/ Alumina nano Coating

    M. VASUMATHI1,a,*, VELA MURALI2,b, S. RASHIA BEGUM1,c, N. RAJENDRAN2,d

    Journal of Polymer Materials, Vol.36, No.1, pp. 1-11, 2019, DOI:10.32381/JPM.2019.36.01.1

Abstract In the Fibre Metal Laminate (FML), Carbon Reinforced Aluminium laminate (CARALL), aluminium is placed next to carbon fibres. The potential difference between the aluminium and carbon is larger, leads to galvanic corrosion, which tries to bring down the durability of the FML. To bring down the effect of corrosion, a material layer is introduced between fibres and aluminium so as to separate them thus lowering the possibility of occurrence of corrosion. Another approach is to coat the surfaces of aluminium with different proportions of aluminium oxide nano particles prior to fabrication of the FML. For More >

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 169-190, 2017, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2017.011.169

Abstract As the landfill leachate has strong pollution on the underground water, surface water and soil. This paper develops the formula of impervious slurry with low permeability, good durability, strong adsorption and retardant based on the bentonite which is modified by polyvinyl alcohol. Through the simulation experiment, the optimum formula of polyvinyl alcohol is 0.2%. Its osmotic coefficient for 28 days is 0.53×10-8~1.86×10-8 cm/s and compressive strength is 0.5~1.5 MPa as well. This paper study on the retardant rule of the consolidation of slurry against the pollution in the leachate by self-made percolation instrument. The experiment More >
