Drive Train Cooling Options for Electric Vehicles

    Randeep Singh1,*, Tomoki Oridate2, Tien Nguyen2

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.22, No.3, pp. 703-717, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2024.050744

Abstract Electrification of vehicles intensifies their cooling demands due to the requirements of maintaining electronics/electrical systems below their maximum temperature threshold. In this paper, passive cooling approaches based on heat pipes have been considered for the thermal management of electric vehicle (EV) traction systems including battery, inverter, and motor. For the battery, a heat pipe base plate is used to provide high heat removal (180 W per module) and better thermal uniformity (<5°C) for the battery modules in a pack while downsizing the liquid cold plate system. In the case of Inverter, two phase cooling system… More > Graphic Abstract

    Suping Shen1,2, Baris Burak Kanbur1,2, Chenlong Wu2, Fei Duan1,2,*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.22, No.2, pp. 397-415, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2024.048984

Abstract The design of three-dimensional printing based conformal cooling channels (CCCs) in injection molding holds great significance. Compared to CCCs, conformal cooling (CC) cavity solutions show promise in delivering enhanced cooling performance for plastic products, although they have been underexplored. In this research, CC cavity is designed within the mold geometry, reinforced by body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice structures to enhance mechanical strength. Three distinct BCC lattice variations have been integrated into the CC cavity: the BCC structure, BCC with cubes, and BCC with pillars. The thermal performances of the BCC lattice-added CC cavity are assessed numerically… More > Graphic Abstract

    Olanrewaju M. Oyewola1,*, Olawale S. Ismail2, Adetokunbo A. Awonusi2

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.22, No.2, pp. 475-490, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2024.047714

Abstract One of the new methods for ensuring that the battery in a thermal energy storage system is kept at the proper temperature is the heat pipe-based Thermal Management System (TMS). In this study, the improvement of cooling performance of a heat pipe based TMS is examined through the variation of condenser section length of heat pipes in an array. The TMSs with an array of heat pipes with different condenser section lengths are considered. The system performances are evaluated using a validated numerical method. The results show that a heat pipe-based TMS provides the best More >

Md. Munirul Hasan1, Md Mustafizur Rahman2,*, Mohammad Saiful Islam3, Wong Hung Chan4, Yasser M. Alginahi5, Muhammad Nomani Kabir6, Suraya Abu Bakar1, Devarajan Ramasamy2

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.22, No.2, pp. 537-556, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2024.047428

Abstract A vehicle engine cooling system is of utmost importance to ensure that the engine operates in a safe temperature range. In most radiators that are used to cool an engine, water serves as a cooling fluid. The performance of a radiator in terms of heat transmission is significantly influenced by the incorporation of nanoparticles into the cooling water. Concentration and uniformity of nanoparticle distribution are the two major factors for the practical use of nanofluids. The shape and size of nanoparticles also have a great impact on the performance of heat transfer. Many researchers are… More > Graphic Abstract

Impact of Crosswind on Steady-State and Dynamic Performance of Natural Draft Dry Cooling Tower Group: A Numerical Analysis

    Xuhui Jiang1, Xi Zhang1, Song Wang1, Ruiqiong Wang1, Peng Zou1, Jingzhou Lu2, Xiaoxiao Li2,*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.22, No.1, pp. 193-216, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2023.046832

Abstract This study investigates the performance of a natural draft dry cooling tower group in crosswind conditions through numerical analysis. A comprehensive three-dimensional model is developed to analyze the steady-state and dynamic behavior of the towers. The impact of wind speed and direction on heat rejection capacity and flow patterns is examined. Results indicate that crosswinds negatively affect the overall heat transfer capacity, with higher crosswind speeds leading to decreased heat transfer. Notably, wind direction plays a significant role, particularly at 0°. Moreover, tower response time increases with higher crosswind speeds due to increased turbulence and More >

    Shigeki Kaneko1, Naoto Mitsume2, Shinobu Yoshimura1,*

Digital Engineering and Digital Twin, Vol.2, pp. 33-48, 2024, DOI:10.32604/dedt.2023.044279

Abstract In an integrated coal gasification combined cycle plant, cooling pipes are installed in the gasifier reactor and water cooling is executed to avoid reaching an excessively high temperature. To accelerate the design, it is necessary to develop an analysis system that can simulate the cooling operation within the practical computational time. In the present study, we assumed the temperature fields of the cooled object and the cooling water to be governed by the three-dimensional (3D) heat equation and the one-dimensional (1D) convection-diffusion equation, respectively. Although some existing studies have employed similar modeling, the applications have… More >

Abstract Mathematical physics equations are often utilized to describe physical phenomena in various fields of science and engineering. One such equation is the Fourier equation, which is a commonly used and effective method for evaluating the effectiveness of temperature control measures for mass concrete. One important measure for temperature control in mass concrete is the use of cooling water pipes. However, the mismatch of grids between large-scale concrete models and small-scale cooling pipe models can result in a significant waste of calculation time when using the finite element method. Moreover, the temperature of the water in… More >
