Abstract Monopiles are the most common foundation form of offshore wind turbines, which bear the vertical load, lateral load and bending moment. It remains uncertain whether the applied vertical load increases the lateral deflection of the pile. This paper investigated the influence of vertical load on the behaviour of monopiles installed in the sand under combined load using three-dimensional numerical methods. The commercial software PLAXIS was used for simulations in this paper. Monopiles were modelled as a structure incorporating linear elastic material behaviour and soil was modelled using the Hardening-Soil (HS) constitutive model. The monopiles under… More >

On the Buckling Response of Offshore Pipelines under Combined Tension, Bending, and External Pressure

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.48, No.1, pp. 25-42, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2015.048.025

Abstract In this paper, the buckling and collapse analysis of offshore pipeline under combined tension, bending moment, and external pressure has been presented with theoretical analysis and FE (finite element) simulation method respectively. Based on the model initially proposed by Kyriakides, a 2-D theoretical model has been further developed. To verify the correctness and accuracy of the model proposed in this paper, numerical simulations have been conducted with 3-D FE model using ABAQUS software. Good consistency has been shown between the calculation results which validate the availability of the theoretical analysis. On this basis, the influence More >

Numerical solution for the elastic-large deflection behavior analysis of rectangular plates under combined loads and non-uniform lateral pressure using Galerkin method

Ju Hye Park, Jeom Kee Paik, S.N. Atluri

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.19, No.3, pp. 69-70, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.019.069

Abstract The aim of the present paper is to develop a semi-analytical method which and quickly and accurately compute the ultimate strength response of rectangular plates under combined loads and non-uniform lateral pressure. It is assumed that the plating is simply supported at four edges which are kept straight. A unique feature of developed method was found to give reasonably accurate results for practical design purpose in terms of the large deflection analysis of plates under non uniformed lateral pressure. The present paper treated by analytically solving the nonlinear governing differential equations of the elastic large More >

The Global Nonlinear Galerkin Method for the Analysis of Elastic Large Deflections of Plates under Combined Loads: A Scalar Homotopy Method for the Direct Solution of Nonlinear Algebraic Equations

    Hong-Hua Dai1,2, Jeom Kee Paik3, Satya N. Atluri2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.23, No.1, pp. 69-100, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.023.069

Abstract In this paper, the global nonlinear Galerkin method is used to perform an accurate and efficient analysis of the large deflection behavior of a simply-supported rectangular plate under combined loads. Through applying the Galerkin method to the governing nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) of the plate, we derive a system of coupled third order nonlinear algebraic equations (NAEs). However, the resultant system of NAEs is thought to be hard to tackle because one has to find the one physical solution from among the possible multiple solutions. Therefore, a suitable initial guess is required to lead… More >
