Effects of Chemical Treatment on the Physical Properties of Typha

    Ibrahima Diaw1,2,*, Mactar Faye1,2, Seckou Bodian2, Vincent Sambou2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.18, No.5, pp. 1409-1418, 2022, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2022.021968 - 27 May 2022

Abstract Plant-based concretes are produced from plant aggregates and a binder. Plant fibers are mainly composed of saccharides (sugars) and these sugars can decrease the concentration of Ca2+ ions in the cement pore solution and delay the formation of hydration products. To improve the interfacial bond between fibers and matrix a chemical treatment is widely used. This study investigates the effect of sodium hydroxide treatment on physical and hygroscopic properties of Typha aggregates. In particular, a 5% sodium hydroxide solution is used to treat these aggregates and their bulk and absolute densities, porosity, water content and water More > Graphic Abstract

Properties of Different Chemically Treated Woven Hemp Fabric Reinforced Bio-Composites

Arunjunai Raj Mahendran*, Günter Wuzella, Stefan Pichler, Herfried Lammer

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.6, pp. 1505-1516, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.017835 - 20 January 2022

Abstract The objective of this work is to carry out the chemical treatment for the hemp fabrics in a closed vacuum system and to prepare bio-based composites using treated hemp fabrics. The change in surface tension of the treated fabrics was measured using contact angle measurement and the wetting behavior using a tensiometer. Bio-based composites were fabricated using bio-based epoxy resin and different chemically treated fabrics. The flexural strength and dynamic water absorption behavior of the composites were characterized. The acetylated fabrics showed very good wetting behavior, and the contact angle values were marginally low compared More > Graphic Abstract

Physico-Chemical and Morphological Characterization of Cellulosic Samples Obtained from Sisal Fibers

    G. Mondragon, C. Peña-Rodriguez, A. Eceiza, A. Arbelaiz*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.5, No.5, pp. 345-356, 2017, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2017.634124

Abstract In this work, the main chemical reactions conditions of a succession of specific chemical treatments used for the isolation of nanocellulose from sisal fibers were evaluated. The novelty of this work is the study done to analyze the effect of different reaction conditions (time or concentration) in fiber structure and composition as well as in the characteristics of obtained cellulosic samples. In order to achieve this goal different physicochemical, thermal and morphological characterization techniques were used after each chemical treatment and the most suitable reaction conditions were selected for the subsequent treatment. Moreover, the thermal More >
