Experimental Exclusion of Guanaco Grazing Increases Cover, Diversity, Land Function and Plant Recruitment in Patagonia

    Carla Cepeda1,*, Gabriel Oliva1,2, Daniela Ferrante1,2

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.7, pp. 1383-1401, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.052534

Abstract Semiarid Patagonia represents 25% of the rangeland area in Argentina, and sheep overgrazing has degraded about a third of it in the past. In this century, depleted domestic stocks have mostly stabilized, but Guanaco populations have grown. These native camelids share habitat and diets with sheep, but their effect on vegetation is poorly understood and has long been debated. We set up an exclusion experiment in Monte León and Cañadón Vaca, a semiarid shrubland grassland in southern Patagonia, currently grazed only by guanacos. Vegetation baselines were studied in 2016 in twelve plots, and half of… More >

Analysis of Maximum Liquid Carrying Capacity Based on Conventional Tubing Plunger Gas Lift

    Yanqun Yu1,*, Wenhao Xu1, Yahui Huangfu1, Jinhai Liu1,2, Bensheng Wang1, Kai Liu1

    Energy Engineering, Vol.121, No.6, pp. 1521-1533, 2024, DOI:10.32604/ee.2024.047986

Abstract China’s unconventional gas fields have a large number of low-productivity and low-efficiency wells, many of which are located in remote and environmentally harsh mountainous areas. To address the long-term stable production of these gas wells, plunger-lift technology plays an important role. In order to fully understand and accurately grasp the drainage and gas production mechanisms of plunger-lift, a mechanical model of plunger-liquid column uplift in the plunger-lift process was established, focusing on conventional plunger-lift systems and representative wellbore configurations in the Linxing region. The operating casing pressure of the plunger-lift process and the calculation method… More >

    Salma Khan1, Muhammad Gulistan1, Nasreen Kausar2, Seifedine Kadry3,4,5, Jungeun Kim6,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.138, No.2, pp. 1951-1979, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.030896

Abstract Tourism is a popular activity that allows individuals to escape their daily routines and explore new destinations for various reasons, including leisure, pleasure, or business. A recent study has proposed a unique mathematical concept called a q−Rung orthopair fuzzy hypersoft set (ROFHS) to enhance the formal representation of human thought processes and evaluate tourism carrying capacity. This approach can capture the imprecision and ambiguity often present in human perception. With the advanced mathematical tools in this field, the study has also incorporated the Einstein aggregation operator and score function into the ROFHS values to support multi-attribute More >

Optimal Concentration of the Bubble Drainage Agent in Foam Drainage Gas Recovery Applications

    Shaopeng Liu1, Guowei Wang2,3,*, Pengfei Liu1, Dong Ye1, Jian Song1, Xing Liu1, Yang Cheng2,3

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.12, pp. 3045-3058, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.029810

Abstract Foam drainage is the flow of liquid through the interstitial spaces between bubbles driven by capillarity and gravity and resisted by viscous damping. The so-called foam drainage gas recovery technology is a technique traditionally used to mitigate the serious bottom-hole liquid loading in the middle and late stages of gas well production. In this context, determining the optimal concentration of the bubble drainage agent is generally crucial for the proper application of this method. In this study, a combination of indoor experiments and theoretical analysis have been used to determine the pressure drop related to… More >

Experimental Study on the Axial Compression Behavior of Short Columns of Steel-Fiber-Reinforced Recycled Aggregate Concrete

    Chunyang Liu1,2,*, Jia Xu1, Yifan Gu1, Ruofan Shi1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.17, No.6, pp. 1129-1142, 2021, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2021.017376

Abstract In order to study the axial compression performances of short columns made of recycled aggregate concrete, four samples were designed with different recycled aggregate replacement rates and carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) sheets. Then, monotonic loading was implemented to assess the variation trends of their axial compression properties. The ABAQUS finite element software was also used to determined the compression performances. Good agreement between experimental and numerical results has been found for the different parameters being considered. As shown by the results, recycled coarse aggregates result in improved ductility and better deformation performance of the More >

    Chunyang Liu1,2,*, Yangyang Wu1, Yingqi Gao1, Zhenyun Tang3

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.17, No.5, pp. 947-958, 2021, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2021.016283

Abstract In order to study the performances of high-strength concrete beams including steel fibers and large-particle recycled aggregates, four different beams have been designed, tested experimentally and simulated numerically. As varying parameters, the replacement rates of recycled coarse aggregates and CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) sheets have been considered. The failure mode of these beams, related load deflection curves, stirrup strain and shear capacity have been determined through monotonic loading tests. The simulations have been conducted using the ABAQUS finite element software. The results show that the shear failure mode of recycled concrete beams is similar More >

Influencing Factors of Load Carrying Capacity and Cooperative Work Laws of Metro Uplift Piles

    Bo Liu1,*, Haoran Li1, Shuya Liu2

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.14, No.3, pp. 249-264, 2020, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2020.06482

Abstract The buoyancy of groundwater can reduce the foundation bearing capacity and cause the metro tunnels to float as a whole, which threatens the safety of structures seriously. Therefore, uplift piles are set up to improve the structural stability. In this paper, FLAC3D software is used to establish the calculation models of pile foundation. The bearing failure process of uplift piles was simulated to study the influencing factors on single pile load bearing capacity as well as the cooperative work laws of pile groups. The load-displacement curves of pile top under different length-diameter ratios, pile-soil interface… More >

An Anisotropic Damage Model for the Evaluation of Load Carrying Capacity of Composite Artificial Ligaments

    P. Vena1, R. Contro

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.3&4, pp. 497-506, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.497

Abstract The adoption of artificial ligaments in current surgery is still characterised by a low success rate due to the fact that mechanical properties of the biomedical devices are such that a biomechanical compatibility is not fully satisfied. A durable artificial ligament should exhibit stiffness as well as strength properties which are such that a full articulation functionality is guaranteed. To this purpose, reliable numerical methods able to predict the mechanical behaviour of such devices both in the elastic and in inelastic range until complete rupture, could be used for designing of devices with tailored mechanical More >
