The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.31, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011296

Abstract This study introduces an innovative plug-in developed within the ABAQUS and Fox GUI environments, which is designed to streamline the design and simulation of hybrid composite laminates for ballistic impact resistance. The plug-in provides an advanced, user-friendly interface for composite laminate design, projectile selection, and ballistic impact simulation parameter configurations. It includes accurately reconstructed models of three projectile types: the tungsten-carbide core projectile M993, the hardened steel core projectile M61, and the lead-core projectile M80, based on scanned data. A distinctive feature of the plug-in is its capacity to facilitate the design of hybrid composite… More >

Study of the Ballistic Impact Behavior of Protective Multi-Layer Composite Armor

Dongsheng Jia, Yingjie Xu*, Liangdi Wang, Jihong Zhu, Weihong Zhang

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.140, No.1, pp. 171-199, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2024.046703 - 16 April 2024

Abstract The abalone shell, a composite material whose cross-section is composed of inorganic and organic layers, has high strength and toughness. Inspired by the abalone shell, several multi-layer composite plates with different layer sequences and thicknesses are studied as bullet-proof material in this paper. To investigate the ballistic performance of this multi-layer structure, the complete characterization model and related material parameters of large deformation, failure and fracture of Al2O3 ceramics and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) are studied. Then, 3D finite element models of the proposed composite plates with different layer sequences and thicknesses impacted by a More >

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.9, No.2, pp. 181-199, 2013, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2013.009.181

Abstract The definition of a complex operative scenario like ballistic damage, that introduces large strains and failure, is a current challenge in the design of critical mechanical components. Aerospace, automotive and manufacturing industries have recently increased their interest in numerical simulations with the long term aim to make these approaches not only reliable enough to reproduce the experimental results but also to provide a trustworthy and effective tool for design. To achieve this aim, the knowledge and calibration of material behaviour is required. Starting from a previous characterization of the constitutive law and ductile failure criterion More >

A Multi-scale Geometrical Model for Finite Element Analyses of Three-dimensional Angle-Interlock Woven Composite under Ballistic Penetration

    Kun Luan1, Baozhong Sun1, Bohong Gu1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.79, No.1, pp. 31-62, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.079.031

Abstract This paper reports finite element multi-scale simulations of ballistic impact damage of three-dimensional angle-interlock woven composite (3DAWC) penetrated under a hemispherical rigid projectile. A multi-scale geometrical model of the 3DAWC was established for the numerical simulation. The multi-scale geometrical model of the 3DAWC consists two parts: one is the microstructure model and another is the continuum model. The microstructure model has the same microstructure with that of the 3DAWC composite panel, including the fiber tows' diameter, fiber tow configuration and fiber volume fraction. The continuum model has the same mechanical properties with the 3DAWC. The… More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.4, No.2, pp. 53-58, 2007, DOI:10.3970/icces.2007.004.053

Abstract This work presents an approach for weight and reliability optimization of aeronautical armors. Military and police helicopters are usually exposed to highly risky situations, with a high probability for these aircrafts to be hit by projectiles. In this context, floor aircraft armor can be used to protect the crews' lives. However, the armoring of an aircraft causes an increase in weight. If this extra weight is poorly arranged, the changes in aircraft centroid position may even destabilize the aircraft. Thus, it is essential to design an armor not only to protect the aircraft, but also… More >
