A New Framework for Vegetation Productivity Dynamics Assessment in Patagonia: Rangeland Functional Archetypes

Mario Eugenio Sello1,*, Rafael Adrian Maddio1, Santiago Ignacio Hurtado1, Daniel Alejandro Castillo1, Daiana Vanesa Perri1, Octavio Agusto Bruzzone2, Marcos Horacio Easdale1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.9, pp. 2479-2498, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.053168 - 30 September 2024

Abstract Adaptive management in arid and semi-arid regions of Patagonia, Argentina, requires a thorough understanding of vegetative dynamics, which can be obtained via rangeland assessment and monitoring. These practices are essential for decision-making to prevent environmental degradation, especially in the light of drought aggravated by climate change. In turn, most methods used to evaluate rangelands focus on data obtained from field measurements and vegetation classifications based on remote sensing data. One of the most frequent problems is that field-based rangeland assessments, based on field measurements, turn out to be expensive because they require high efforts in… More >

    Cinthia T. Lucero1, María de los Á. Ruíz2, Fabiola Pagliero1, Carolina Castaño1, Mariela L. Ambrosino1, Graciela S. Lorda1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.6, pp. 1081-1099, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.050762 - 27 June 2024

Abstract Beneficial microbes can improve soil health by promoting soil structure, nutrient cycling, and disease suppression. In addition, a wide array of rhizospheric microbes are responsible for producing metabolically active compounds including various types of plant growth regulators. So, microbial biodiversity studies could contribute to the improvement of agricultural practices in deprived areas, such as the Pampean semiarid region. The vast majority of studies conducted on endophytic microorganisms have focused on intensive crop legume species. In contrast, little attention has been paid to microorganisms of native legumes, whose ecology is not directly affected by human action.… More >

Abstract Solar energy represents one of the most important renewable energy sources contributing to the energy transition process. Considering that the observation of daily global solar radiation (GSR) is not affordable in some parts of the globe, there is an imperative need to develop alternative ways to predict it. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of different hybrid data-driven techniques in predicting daily GSR in semi-arid regions, such as the majority of Spanish territory. Here, four ensemble-based hybrid models were developed by hybridizing Additive Regression (AR) with Random Forest (RF),… More >

    Xiaolan Guo1,2, Di Zhao2, Jinbin Hu3, Delu Wang2,*, Jianbin Wang1, Muhammad Shakeel4

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.1, pp. 209-223, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.023050 - 06 September 2022

    Abstract

To evaluate the effects of nitrogen (N) and irrigation coupling on the soil N distribution, plant N utilization, and fruit yield of rabbiteye blueberries (Vaccinium virgatum), a field experiment was designed using two factors (water and fertilizer application) with four levels of irrigation and three levels of fertilization, and a control. Under the different water and fertilizer combinations, N primarily accumulated in the leaves. Irrigation and N application within appropriate ranges (pure N ≤ 29 g/plant and irrigation volume ≤ 2.5 L/plant) significantly improved the blueberry fruit yield. Increases in water and N within these ranges

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.71, No.3, pp. 5837-5854, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.023257 - 14 January 2022

Abstract In order to achieve a highly accurate estimation of solar energy resource potential, a novel hybrid ensemble-learning approach, hybridizing Advanced Squirrel-Search Optimization Algorithm (ASSOA) and support vector regression, is utilized to estimate the hourly tilted solar irradiation for selected arid regions in Algeria. Long-term measured meteorological data, including mean-air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, alongside global horizontal irradiation and extra-terrestrial horizontal irradiance, were obtained for the two cities of Tamanrasset-and-Adrar for two years. Five computational algorithms were considered and analyzed for the suitability of estimation. Further two new algorithms, namely Average Ensemble and Ensemble using… More >

    Mirassón HR1, IR Palomo2, RE Brevedan2, MN Fioretti2

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.80, pp. 147-151, 2011, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2011.80.147

Abstract Safflower production is mainly concentrated in northwestern Argentina although the most suitable area for its production is the central, Semiarid Pampean Region. The response of different varieties able to produce high sustainable yields was studied under different environments, with the idea of promoting these varieties in the study region. Six variety trials were carried out at two locations in the study area, Santa Rosa (La Pampa, 36° 39’ S, 64° 16’ W) and Tres Picos (Buenos Aires, 38° 16’ S, 62° 13’ W), during several years. Relative yield was used as a measure of safflower More >

The influence of controlled fires on a plant community in the south of the Caldenal, and its relationship with a regional state and transition model

    Tizón1 FR, DV Peláez1,2,3, OR Elía1,2

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.79, pp. 141-146, 2010, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2010.79.141

Abstract Fire plays a fundamental role in the structure of vegetation communities in the Caldenal. However, this effect has decreased considerably since the introduction of domestic cattle, which reduces the amount of fine combustible material. Objectives of this study were (1) to analyze the diversity and composition of a typical vegetation community in the south of the Caldenal after exposure to different fire frequencies, and (2) to show the convenience of using controlled fire for reversing the processes of scrub formation to states with more diverse and productive grassland communities. Forty-five herbaceous and woody species were… More >
