Efficient Use of Steel Slag in Alkali-Activated Blast Furnace Slag Based Geopolymer

Yu Bai, Lei Wang, Ying Fang*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.7, pp. 3129-3141, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.026923 - 05 June 2023

Abstract Energy shortage and the emission of greenhouse gases have become a global problem of urgent concern. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a low carbon building material. Geopolymers have become a hot topic due to their environmental sustainability and the feasibility of immobilizing industrial waste. In this paper, steel slag (SS) fines were investigated as auxiliary materials of blast furnace slag (BFS) based geopolymer. The hydration heat properties, flowability, compressive strength, sorptivity coefficient, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the geopolymer pastes were determined. The results showed that the incorporation More >

Influence of Erosion Induced by NaCl on the Mechanical Performances of Alkali-Activated Mineral Admixtures

    Jing Yu1, Jie Ren2, Guangming Shen3, Weixiang Sun2, Hui Wang4,*

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.9, pp. 2385-2398, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.027877 - 16 May 2023

Abstract In this paper, the influence of NaCl freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles and dry-wet (D-W) alternations on the flexural, compressive and bonding strengths of alkali-activated fly ash (FA) and a blast furnace slag powder (BFS) is investigated. The considered NaCl concentration is 3%. The effect of polypropylene fibers on the mechanical strengths is also examined. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetry (TG) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are selected to discern the mechanisms underpinning the NaCl-induced erosion. The obtained results indicate that the best results in terms of material resistance are obtained with admixtures containing 60% BFS and 40%… More >

Characteristic of Fresh and Harden Properties of Polyvinyl Alcohol Fibre Reinforced Alkali Activated Composite

    Yiguang Wang1,2, Zhe Zhang1, Xun Zhang1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 1321-1337, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.023266 - 31 October 2022

Abstract Fibre can enhance the mechanical properties of cement-based composites, but fibre also degrades their workability. However, the quantitative effects of fiber content and length-diameter ratio on alkali-activated materials are still unclear. Various aspect ratio, volume fraction of polyvinyl alcohol fibre (PVAF), and various water-binder ratio were employed to prepare a total of 26 groups of fibre reinforced alkali-activated composite (FRAAC). The influence of PVAF fibre factor (product of fiber volume fraction and length-diameter ratio) on flowability, compactness, strength, and crack fractal dimension of FRAAC was researched. The influence of water-binder ratio on the plastic viscosity… More >

Research and Application Status and Development Trend of Alkali-Activated Binder Powder for Mine Backfill

    Qian Zhou1, Yueyue Zhang1, Juanhong Liu1,2,3,*, Aixiang Wu1,2, Hongjiang Wang1,2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.12, pp. 3185-3199, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.020316 - 14 July 2022

Abstract To improve the economic and social benefits of mining and backfill, it is necessary to find the backfill materials suitable for mineral mining, improve the various properties of the filling materials, and develop low cost, high performance new filling materials. Portland cement is neither environmentally friendly nor economical. Currently, we have begun to study and apply some industrial waste, such as slag, fly ash, and other solid wastes, with certain activities as the primary component of cementing material that will not only meet the technical requirements of filling, but also comprehensively utilize industrial waste and… More >

The Interaction Effects of the Parameters on Optimization Design in Paper Production Waste Usage on Alkali-Activated Slag with Taguchi Method

    Teng Yi1,*, Shuenn-Ren Liou1, Wen-Yih Kuo1,2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.6, pp. 1753-1772, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.018587 - 20 January 2022

Abstract The paper investigates the second-order interactions of parameters in an alkali-activated mixture of paper production waste (PPW) and blast furnace slag (BFS) in Taguchi method. The PPW including lime mud (LM) and paper sludge (PS). This paper provides the experimental models to assess the compressive and flexural strength of them at 7-day and 28-day. The results have shown that the second-order interactions between PPW and alkali-activated activator exists in each experimental model, and the significant interactions affect the selection of optimal compositions. Compared with the interactions between the PPW themselves, the interactions between PPW and… More >
