Abstract Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) is the most important plant producing natural fibers for the textile industry. In this study, we first investigated the phenotypic variation of seven agronomic traits of 273 diverse cotton accessions in the years 2017 and 2018, which were from 18 geographical regions. We found large variations among the traits in different geographical regions and only half of the traits in either years 2017 or 2018 followed a normal distribution. We then genotyped the collection with 81,612 high quality SNPs. Phylogenetic tree and population structure revealed a diverse genetic structure of the core… More >

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.10, pp. 2921-2936, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.029853 - 15 September 2023

Abstract Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) will have a serious effect both on the yield and quality of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.). It is crucial to select and breed quinoa varieties with PHS resistance and excellent agronomic traits for guidance production and utilization of quinoa. A comprehensive evaluation of the PHS resistance and agronomic traits of 37 species of quinoa resources was conducted in Chengdu Plain. The evaluation used various methods, including grain germination rate (GR), grain germination index (GI), total spike germination rate (SR), total grain germination index (SI), grey correlation analysis (GCA), cluster analysis and correlation analysis.… More >

Effects of Drought Stress on Key Enzymes of Carbon Metabolism, Photosynthetic Characteristics and Agronomic Traits of Soybean at the Flowering Stage under Different Soil Substrates

    Shuang Song1, Xiaomei Li2, Xin Wang1, Qi Zhou1, Yongping Li1, Xiaojing Wang1, Shoukun Dong1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.11, pp. 2475-2490, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.021090 - 12 July 2022

Abstract Soybean is an important legume food crop, and its seeds are rich in nutrients, providing humans and animals with edible oil and protein feed. However, soybean is sensitive to water requirements, and drought is an important factor limiting soybean yield and quality. This study used Heinong 84 (drought resistant variety) and Hefeng 46 (intermediate variety) as tested varieties planted in chernozem, albic, and black soils. The effects of drought stress on the activities of key enzymes in carbon metabolism and photosynthetic characteristics of soybean were studied during the flowering stage, most sensitive to water. Constitutive Activation OsbZIP62 Improves Plant Height and Yield through Regulating the Expression of Agronomic Traits Related Genes in Rice

    Shiqin Yang1,2,#, Tao Jiang3,#, Peilin Shen1, Shengjie Ren3, Zhun Gu1, Fangjun Feng2, Yunpeng Peng2,4, Wei Wang5, Kai Xu2,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.8, pp. 1671-1686, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.018996 - 14 April 2022

Abstract Plant height is an important morphological trait that affects crop yield. Several genes related to plant height and yield have been reported in rice (Oryza sativa L.), however, the molecular mechanism underlying the regulation of these traits is still not completely understood. VP64 is widely used as a transcriptional activator to investigate the biological function of genes encoding transcription factors. Here, we identified a novel bZIP transcription factor OsbZIP62 that is involved in modulating agronomic traits in rice. Overexpression of OsbZIP62-VP64 (OsbZIP62V) significantly increases the plant height and yield per plant in rice. RNA-seq analysis showed that some More >

A Study on Genotype-by-Environment Interaction Analysis for Agronomic Traits of Maize Genotypes Across Huang-Huai-Hai Region in China

    Haiwang Yue1, Jianwei Wei1, Junliang Xie1, Shuping Chen1, Haicheng Peng1, Hongmei Cao2, Junzhou Bu1,*, Xuwen Jiang3,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.1, pp. 57-81, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.017308 - 16 August 2021

Abstract Facing the trend of increasing population, how to increase maize grain yield is a very important issue to ensure food security. In this study, 28 nationally approved maize hybrids were evaluated across 24 different climatic conditions for two consecutive years (2018–2019). The purpose of this study was to select high-yield with stable genotypes and identify important agronomic traits for maize breeding program improvement. The results of this study showed that the genotype ╳ environment interaction effects of the 12 evaluated agronomic traits was highly significant (P < 0.001). We introduced a novel multi-trait genotype-ideotype distance index… More >

    Antuna Grijalva O1, SA Rodríguez Herrera1, A Espinoza Banda1, P Cano Ríos1, G Llaven Valencia2, JL Coyac Rodríguez1, A González Torres1, DG Reta Sánchez3, M Mendoza Elos4, E Andrio Enríquez4

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.86, pp. 246-251, 2017, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2017.86.246

Abstract Knowledge of the genetic components of agronomic traits is an important factor to characterize landraces of maize to make them useful in plant breeding programs. The objective of this work was to know the genetic action and combining ability of several agronomic traits of five maize races and their crosses. Maize landraces analyzed were Jala, Tuxpeño, Celaya, Pepitilla and Dulce. Plant height, days to male and female flowering date after planting, and dry matter and grain yields were recorded. Those variables showed highly significant differences among genotypes. With the exception of dry matter yield, the More >

Early testing of S1 lines of maize

Salinas Jiménez V, JC Raya Pérez, CL Aguirre Mancilla, F Chablé Moreno, JG Ramírez Pimentel, G García Rodríguez, J Covarrubias Prieto

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.85, pp. 203-209, 2016, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2016.85.203

Abstract Eighty S1 maize (Zea mays L.) lines derived from halfsib families with good yield potential (greater than landraces in the region) were evaluated, with the purpose of selecting outstanding lines. Native populations are a source of germplasm for genetic improvement through selection and hybridization. Analysis of variance showed highly significant differences between the lines S1 in the variables days to anthesis (FM), silking date (FF), plant height (Apl), ear height (Amz), leaves above ear (NHEmz), ear length (Lmz), row number (Nhil), kernels per row (Ghil), total kernels per ear (TGmz) and grain yield (Rend). Variation in agronomic traits and lycopene in advanced tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) cultivars

    Gaspar-Peralta P1, JC Carrillo-Rodríguez1, JL Chávez-Servia, AM Vera-Guzmán2, I Pérez-León1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.81, pp. 15-22, 2012, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2012.81.015

Abstract In order to evaluate the agronomic behavior, genotypic variation, lycopene content, and other components of fruit quality, eight advanced tomato lines were planted in greenhouses during two crop cycles, August-December 2008 and February-July 2009. Tomato lines showed significant differences in leaf length (LL), stem diameter (SD), number of flowers per branch (FLNB), number of fruits per branch (FRNB), locules per fruit (LPF), and fruit length (FRL), and the greatest phenotypic expression in fruit traits was quantified in August-December 2008. Environmental variance was significantly higher than the genotypic and genotype-environment interaction variances in LL, FRNB, fruits… More >
