    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.3, pp. 275-287, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.08861

Abstract Biobased adsorbents are eco-friendly materials used for water and wastewater treatment and air cleaning. This research work explores the potential use of rice husk chars as a low-cost adsorbent for pollutants from water, such as methylene blue and ethinylestradiol. Rice husk chars are prepared by combustion of rice husks (RH-Char) or pre-treated rice husks (PT-Char). A third char (M-Char) supplied by a local company which uses rice husks as combustion material is also studied. The chars are characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) in conjunction with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and zeta-potential measurements.… More >

Maud Chemin, Céline Moreau, Bernard Cathala, Ana Villares*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.1, pp. 29-43, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.07850

Abstract In this work, we studied the adsorption of modified cellulose nanocrystals onto solid surfaces by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). Cellulose nanocrystals obtained from tunicate (CNC) were modified at reducing end by amidation reactions. Two different functionalities were investigated: a polyamine dendrimer (CNC-NH2), which interacts with gold surface by the amine groups; and a biotin moiety (CNC-Biot), which has a strong affinity for the protein streptavidin (SAV). QCM-D results revealed different adsorption behaviors between modified and unmodified CNCs. Hence, unmodified CNCs covered almost all the surface forming a rigid and flat layer whereas reducing end modified CNCs remained… More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.12, pp. 1403-1414, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.08380

Abstract Biocompatible and high content grafted carboxymethyl cellulose-gpoly(acrylic acid) powder was successfully synthesized in an aqueous system, and used as adsorbents for the removal of Cu(II) in aqueous solution. The copolymer was characterized by FT-IR and SEM techniques. Graft copolymerization introduced a large number of carboxyl groups in the polymer and caused the micro-surface of the material to be porous. The fundamental adsorption behaviors of the material were studied. The adsorption kinetics was well fitted with pseudo-second order equation, while the adsorption isotherm preferred to be described the Langmuir equation. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model was 154.32… More >

    Yan Wu1,*, Xinyu Wu1, Feng Yang2,*, Li Xu1, Meng Sun1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.11, pp. 1181-1195, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.07493

Abstract The cellulose nanocrystals/graphene composite aerogel (CGA) and polyvinyl alcohol/cellulose nanocrystals/graphene composite aerogel (PCGA) were prepared by suspension titration, tert-butanol solution replacement and freeze-drying successively. The removal rates of methyl blue (MB) from water by CGA and PCGA were evaluated and the effects of additions, adsorption time, reaction temperature and pH value of CGA and PCGA on MB removal rate were discussed. It was found that the optimal concentrations of both CGA and PCGA were 2 g∙L-1 in the adsorption reaction process and the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 120 min. The higher the initial pH value of MB solution is,… More >

    Yi Xue1,2,*, Faning Dang2, Rongjian Li2, Fei Liu3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.115, No.3, pp. 345-358, 2018, DOI: 10.3970/cmes.2018.08052

Abstract Adsorption deformation significantly affects the seepage characteristics of coal. However, effect of sorption time on coal permeability and gas pressure has not been investigated systematically. In this study, the sorption experiment of coal samples is conducted to elaborate the importance of sorption equilibration time. Then a coupled coal deformation and gas flow model is established considering the sorption characteristic and permeability evolution. This coupled model is implemented through finite element method to analyze the effect of sorption time on coal permeability and gas pressure. The simulation results reveal that the gas pressure of the coal will change with the adsorption… More >

Abstract Water adsorption and capillarity are key phenomena involved during heat and moisture transfer in porous building materials. They account for interaction between solid matrix, liquid water and moist air. They are considered through Water Vapor Adsorption Isotherm (WVAI) and Retention Curve (RC) functions which are constitutive laws characterizing water activity within a porous medium. The objective of this paper is to present a water vapor adsorption and retention models built from multimodal Pore Size Distribution Function (PSDF) and to see how its parameters modify moisture storage for hygroscopic and near saturation ranges. The microstructure of the porous medium is represented… More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.3, pp. 227-234, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.00024

Abstract This work aimed at analyzing the petroleum adsorption capacity and the compressive strength of cellulose cryogels produced with the addition of 4 and 8% (w/w) sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Cryogels were produced from a 1.5% (m/m) suspension of cellulose microfibers, which originated from Pinus elliotti, in distilled water. The addition of NaOH increased the compression strength of cryogel by 30% when compared to cryogel without the reagent. Due to the 50% decrease in volume, the cryogel FLNB-8h (8% NaOH) has its petroleum adsorption capacity decreased in average by 58%, whereas the FLNB-4 (4% NaOH) cryogel had it only by 14%. The… More >
