    Yi Huang1, Giovanni Biglino1, Fengyuan Liu2,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.32, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.013295

Abstract Coarctation of aorta (CoA) is one of the congenital heart diseases with a proportion of 5% to 10%, which has a prevalence of four per 10,000 babies. As the most common cardiac defect missed at routine physical exams, CoA has a high undiagnosed rate of 60% to 80% in newborns before hospital discharge. The insertion of bare metal stents (BMS) with balloon dilatation is the useful method to reopen the narrow area of aorta. However, the stented vessel has a fixed diameter and cannot grow with the age, resulting in a relative restenosis and frequent… More >

    Enzoh Langi1, Liguo Zhao2,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.25, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.010163

Abstract Additive manufacturing emerges as an innovative technology to fabricate medical stents used to treat blocked arteries. However, there is a lack of study of underlying microstructure and mechanical properties of additively manufactured stent. In this work, additively manufactured 316L stainless steel stent was investigated, with electrochemical polishing being used to improve the surface finish. Microstructural characterisation was carried out using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction. The hardness and elastic modulus were measured using Berkovich nanoindentation, with an emphasis on the effect of grain orientation. In addition, spherical nanoindentation was used to… More >

Pulmonary artery interventions after the arterial switch operation: Unique and significant risks

Jesse Lee, Doaa Abdullah Shahbah, Howaida El‐Said, Rodrigo Rios, Kanishka Ratnayaka, John Moore

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.14, No.2, pp. 288-296, 2019, DOI:10.1111/chd.12726

Abstract Background: In the modern era, results of the arterial switch operation (ASO) for transposition of the great arteries are excellent. However, because of the LeCompte maneuver, there may be a propensity for development of pulmonary artery stenosis. We encountered atypical complications of pulmonary artery stenting in patients after the ASO, including aorto‐pulmonary fistula and coronary compression.
Methods: We performed a 10‐year retrospective review of catheterizations per‐ formed in patients after ASO in our institution with a focus on adverse events.
Results: Diagnostic and interventional catheterizations were performed in 47 pa‐ tients. In 29 patients, 37 interventional procedures performed,… More >
