The effects of hormone-mediated PI3K/AKT signaling on spermatogenesis in Sertoli cells

    YANSHUANG ZHAO, WANXI YANG*

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.8, pp. 1709-1725, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.030379 - 28 August 2023

Abstract The phosphoinositide-3-kinase/Akt (PI3K/AKT) signaling pathway is crucial for Sertoli cell development and completing spermatogenesis. Its main role is to promote proliferation and inhibit apoptosis. Many factors activate the PI3K/AKT pathway, like hormones, such as follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), androgen, estrogen, insulin to name a few. Many of these factors have receptors inside or on the surface of Sertoli cells (SCs). This review summarizes how these hormones directly regulate the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in SCs, which in turn affects SC proliferation and differentiation. Further, hormone-mediated PI3K/AKT signaling also stimulates SC secretion, which is essential for germ More >

Es-SOX8 regulates the morphological changes of the sperm nucleus of Eriocheir sinensis by activating Es-BMP2 transcription

    KE JIA1, FU-QING TAN2, SHUANG-LI HAO1,*, WAN-XI YANG1,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.11, pp. 2399-2413, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.022015 - 07 July 2022

Abstract The SRY-related high mobility group (HMG) box (SOX) transcription factors participate in many physiological processes of animal growth, development, and reproduction and are related to spermatogenesis in many species. However, the relationship between SOX and spermatogenesis in Eriocheir sinensis is rarely reported. Here, we studied the role of Es-SOX8 in the spermatogenesis of E. sinensis and its possible regulation mechanism. Immunofluorescence results demonstrated Es-SOX8 signal in both cytoplasm and nucleus of spermatogonia, spermatocytes as well as spermatids, but not in mature spermatozoa. Hematoxylin and eosin staining showed a significant increase in the number of spermatozoa with abnormal… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.45, No.4, pp. 971-984, 2021, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.015178 - 22 April 2021

Abstract Spermatogenesis is a complicated and highly regulated male gamete differentiation process that begins with the proliferation and differentiation of spermatogonia to the release of the mature spermatozoa. The autophagy-related gene atg7 has been reported as closely related to spermatogenesis and communication of Sertoli cell-germ cells in mice, including acrosome biogenesis, sperm flagellum development, and ectoplasmic specialization assembly. However, the function of es-ATG7 and its molecular regulatory mechanism during spermatogenesis in Crustacea remain largely unknown. Here, we cloned and identified es-atg7 from the testes of the Chinese mitten crabs Eriocheir sinensis and found that the expression of es-atg7 was… More >

MicroRNA-382 inhibits the proliferation of mouse spermatogonia by targeting Kmt5a

YI ZHENG#, PENGFEI ZHANG#, JINSHENG ZHU#, LINGKAI ZHANG, WENXIAN ZENG*

    BIOCELL, Vol.44, No.2, pp. 201-207, 2020, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2020.08770 - 27 May 2020

Abstract Spermatogenesis is a highly efficient and intricate process in the testis by which mature spermatozoa are produced daily to maintain lifelong male fertility. Essential to this process are spermatogonia capable of both proliferation and differentiation. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms for spermatogonial proliferation and differentiation remain poorly understood. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a category of non-coding small RNAs with regulatory functions by binding to the 3’ untranslated region (UTR) of the target mRNA. Previous studies have demonstrated that miRNAs are capable of modulating cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis, but the roles of individual miRNAs in spermatogonial fate… More >

Actin levels fluctuate in the seminiferous epithelium at various stages during spermatogenesis in the rat

CRISTIAN ACOSTA, MABEL FÓSCOLO, JUAN CARLOS CAVICCHIA*

    BIOCELL, Vol.41, No.2-3, pp. 63-66, 2017, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2017.41.063

Abstract The testis is a double gland comprised of the sperm-producing seminiferous tubules and a complex endocrine interstice. The former structures generate and release whole cells (exocrine aspect of the gland) while the latter synthesize and release androgens and related hormones. The testis also has poorly understood paracrine connexions. These connexions play an important role during spermatogenesis. A key molecule within these structures is β-actin. Therefore, the present study aims at examining the expression pattern of β-actin during the various stages of the spermatic cycle in the rat. To achieve this goal, we used a combination More >

Seasonal testicular changes in Dendropsophus minutus Peters, 1872 (Anura, Hylidae)

    ADELINA FERREIRA1,* AND MAHMOUD MEHANNA2

    BIOCELL, Vol.36, No.2, pp. 57-62, 2012, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2012.36.057

Abstract The reproductive cycle in anurans may be either continuous or discontinuous. These differences may be connected to seasonal climate changes and/or to anthropic activity. Forty adult male individuals of the Dendropsophus minutus species were collected during one year, in the municipality of Chapada dos Guimarães (Mato Grosso, Brazil). The testicles were studied under light and transmission electron microscopy. No variations were observed when the diameter of the seminiferous tubules and the thickness of the interstitial tissue were studied. However, changes in spermatogenesis were conspicuous and indicated that the reproductive cycle of D. minutus in Chapada dos Guimarães More >

Morphologic and morphometric analysis of testis of Pseudis limellum (Cope, 1862) (Anura, Hylidae) during the reproductive cycle in the Pantanal, Brazil

    ADELINA FERREIRA1, MAHMOUD MEHANNA1,2, CYNTHIA P. A. PRADO3

    BIOCELL, Vol.32, No.2, pp. 185-194, 2008, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2008.32.185

Abstract The spermatogenesis of Pseudis limellum, from the Southern Pantanal, Brazil, was studied from July 1995 to May 1996, through histological sections of the testis. The cells could be differentiated as: primary spermatogonia, large cells, generally with bilobed nucleus; secondary spermatogonia, smaller cells, with darker cytoplasm, chromatin of radial form; primary and secondary spermatocytes, differentiated according to the different stages of the nucleus during the successive cells divisions. Furthermore, we observed cells in process of morphologic differentiation: rounded spermatids much smaller, with nucleus containing chromatin in compacting process and cytoplasm reduction; elongated spermatids, generally parallel organized in… More >

    ADELINA FERREIRA, HEIDI DOLDER

    BIOCELL, Vol.27, No.3, pp. 353-362, 2003, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2003.27.353

Abstract Spermatogenesis, with emphasis on spermiogenesis, is described for the lizard, Tropidurus itambere, using light microscopy, phase contrast and epifluorescence, as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Cellular differentiation involves events of chromatin condensation, nuclear elongation and the formation of structural complexes, such as the acrosomal and axonemal ones. Other new characteristics, exclusive for this species, include various aspects of the subacrosomal granule, the insertion of the proacrosomal vesicle and the development of these structures to participate in the acrosomal complex. Radial projections occur just above the nuclear shoulders, which have been recognized already from the More >
